We decided to stay in the cliffs area in Negril and chose the Xtabi because of its amenities, attractive description and reasonable rates, but beware! We were robbed the first night we were there. Someone came in through our bedroom window (while we were there sleeping) and stole some money. Luckily for us, they weren't interested in passports, credit cards or cameras - just cash!

When you arrive at the Xtabi, the staff aren't very forthcoming about their facilities/amenities/services. We received no information regarding their restaurant/bar, nothing in terms of what they offer for security (they do have safes - which we certainly used after the incident), what they have in terms of recreational activities, etc. Besides being able to take your money, the staff don't seem to be very well trained.

The problem was that our room was located on the ground level and the windows have no screens or bars, so it's very easy for an intruder to come in through the window if it isn't locked. We were so wiped from travelling, we hadn't bothered to check the windows and hadn't thought much about security (besides bolting the door). So, in some ways, were we lucky because we only lost a bit of cash. What bothered us most was that whoever it was entered the room while we were there! That was freaky! And this is a hotel with gates and security!

The manager and owner seemed sincerely concerned. We were moved to the second level, paid for a key for the security box and were a lot more diligent after that. It was our "wake-up" call. The security company was called in to investigate (what they could have done, I'm not sure). The owner also mentioned going to Kingston to purchase bars for the windows, but we don't know if that actually happened. We heard while we were there that these sorts of robberies were going on all up and down the beach at Negril. We were told that thieves do not take passports and such because if they are caught with them, then they're in big trouble. Cash cannot be traced.

Other than not feeling really welcomed in a number of respects, the Xtabi is in a good location, the rooms are decent for the price, the grounds are very nice, the snorkeling around the caves is OK and the restaurant was fairly good.

So the Xtabi is quite an OK place to stay - just be wary and be sure to ask about the safes in the room when you arrive.

This was our second time to Xtabi; the last time had been twelve years ago. It was exactly as we had remembered it! The views are amazing, and all of the people are soooo friendly! We have already booked our next vacation for Nov. '08, for 2 weeks this time! The managers, Allen & Janet, were very helpful.
Kingsley will pick you up at the airport and will take you on any day trips around the island. Nice taxi driver, who will make sure you have a Red Stripe in hand, as you leave the airport. (He was also willing to give us a bathroom break halfway to Xtabi! And then more Red Stripe.)
Be sure to stay on the sea side of Xtabi - the sea front cottages are the best and the rates are great! Of course, this is not like an all-inclusive, nor did we want it to be! It is very nice, basic accomodations - no phone, no TV, no air conditioning. With the ceiling fans and the sea breezes, you don't need air conditioning. If you can't live without some music or sound in your room, be sure to take along a small CD player/radio, as the only music is in the bar in the evening. The restaurant at Xtabi serves excellent food - be sure to try the Pumpkin Soup!
The main bartender at Xtabi is Donovan, and he makes the best island cocktails! What a nice, personable guy! He'll even let you plug in your ipod and play some of your favorite music in the bar.
Talk to Andrew if you want to go snorkeling. He took us snorkeling at night! It was such a great experience - he caught lobster while we were snorkeling, and then cooked it up for us back at Xtabi - excellent supper! He also took us to a nightclub in Negril called "The Jungle" - lots of fun!
You can walk along the cliffs to find some other great places to eat. Favorites:
"Three Dives" - right next door to Xtabi - great jerk meals, good prices.
"Pirate's Cave" - a short walk from Xtabi. Great place to go to snorkel and then dry off while you are having a great supper.
"Rockhouse" - a short walk from Xtabi. Great place to go to snorkel and then dry off while you are having a great breakfast.
There are plenty of places to go out on the cliffs and you can walk to a lot of them. Just be careful walking, as the drivers here are crazy! Find out the going rate for taxi fares to different places, from people who are staying on the island, and talk to the taxi driver before you get into the car. If he gives you too high of a price, walk away. If you do this, he will usually give you the going rate, or the next taxi cab will. Don't be pressured into spending more!
Also, be sure to hire a fishing boat to take you snorkeling at the reef and lunch on Booby Cay. Take enough "J" (the Jamaican dollar) along for a lobster lunch on the beach. Again, find out the going rate for this trip. You don't want to be over-charged for things on the island, but you should also be very willing to pay the going rate - remember, this is how the Jamaican people make a living, so don't be too cheap, and tip according to your service. We found that most Jamaicans are very willing to give you the best service and they should be compensated accordingly.
Remember, the pace here is slow (island life) so don't expect anything to happen quickly. Always figure a meal will take at least an hour or more, even a simple breakfast. It is a great chance to just relax, enjoy the views/atmosphere and talk to your travel partner or the people around you - both other travelers and Jamaicans. Once you are here a few days, you will find some very interesting things to talk about, as island life is wonderfully, and sometimes so oddly, different from life in the states. Enjoy!!

Spent a glorious four days in cabana number 3. Wish we would have spent our entire Jamaican vacation here. We spent the next five days at a "luxurious" ($700/nt) all inclusive wishing we could return to the peaceful natural environment of xtabi. With a fridge in our room, a nice bar and restaurant on the property, what more did we need??! Would return in a heartbeat.

ps-the outdoor showers are a fantastic treat!

Our favorite place in jamaica; we try to go every year; laid back atmosphere with no hassling; snorkel and swim in privacy; eat at hotel or nearby restaurants; nice rooms with great views; you don't need a car if taxi taken from airport.

In Negril for a wedding and wedding resort was booked- was nervous about staying in a less expensive venue and was wonderfully surprised by Xtabi. While definitely older and more rustic, the pool, room (including the shower and balcony) and grounds were spotless, the staff was lovely and accomodating, and the food in the hotel restaurant was well-priced and delicious. I would definitely stay there again.

I have been traveling to Negril since 1990 and it was my boyfriend's 2nd visit and we both loved it. First I would like to mention most of the other travelers we met at Xtabi were repeat visitors. Personally, I think that is a very good thing and it definitely says something about the place.

The room we stayed in was cottage #6 on the cliff side. I thought it was great! No foot traffic, very private, and great for couples. Cottage #6 is located as the last cottage before 3 Dives with #7 & #8 behind it but there is a nice green space between the places. Cottages 1-5 are all in a row right next to each other. Very neighborly. Our view from our king size bed everyday was our own private, Caribbean cove. There was an outdoor shower that seemed to lack privacy until you actually took a shower and realized that it did not. Shower pressure and hot water were never an issue, which I have previously experienced many times in Negril. Nice large room and a good sized bathroom. We had a private veranda that we used more than our room. Water access were stairs next to our place that led to a cave under our place. Though our cottage was rustic on some standards I personally loved it.( No AC or T.V. but a refrig.) Cottage #1 is probably the best cottage and #6 is second based on location.

Snorkeling is a must at Xtabi. There is a pool as well across the road and other rooms that are less expensive. I looked at them and they were nice,clean,t.v., air and updated in the two-story building. Nice for the budget traveler or anyone looking to save $$ to do day trips etc.

The restaurant at Xtabi during the day is relaxed, while at night, table clothes and candles adorn the tables. The candles illuminate the night while you dine to sound of the waves. We had both lunch and dinner there and were never disappointed. Prices at lunch and dinner compare to what you would pay in the US. Compare date night in the States to date night at Xtabi...umm no comparison. So not a deal but the view and ambience are priceless.

The staff at Xtabi are wonderful. Everyone from gardeners to bartenders were exceptional. I felt as if I had stayed there before. Alan and Janet are the managers and have a very special staff.

Xtabi has been around for as long as I can remember and has that great vibe that keeps me coming back to Negril. Xtabi isn't Rockhouse but it is reflected in the price! If you want a quaint, romantic, metal roof cabana over looking the sea, Xtabi is for you. We will be back and can't wait to be a repeat visitor.

Xtabi, keep shining on, The Light Lady

Other places that deserve mentioning:
Spice and Spice, great jerk chicken!
Private's cave, drinks and sports.
3 dives, good food and interesting clientele
M L and DJ's, both small groceries in walking distance from Xtabi (opposite directions from each other)
Erica's, great lobster at a great price!
