Getting there
My husband and I stayed at Xtabi in March and even though we've been lucky enough to visit Jamaica many times, this was one of our best trips ever..so good we even extended our stay by 2 days!
We flew into the negril airport (we usually take the higway and flying TimAir made the trip so much easier!!) and one of the taxi drivers was available- Tarzan is fabulous!!! He bills his service as full service...annd it was! He was patient while we stopped at the grocery store for goodies, while we stoped by the bar at Idle Awhile for Carlton's Rum Punch (no trips to Negril are complete without it and a quick shout out to the fabulous staff there- LOVE them too!), then up to Xtabi...

Our cottage was ready right away.. check in was so easy!!! We were in the cottage in just a few seconds....
The cottage was darling- new cushions since the last time we were there .. and oceanview can't be beaten..and the outdoors shower-WOW!!
Our Stay
The staff and management were great- they even helped us arrange for a massage with Sara (which was fabulous!)...
The XTABI cliff cottages really are the best escape ... no bar noise...just the wonderful crashing waves! We got up in the morning and stumbled out to our deck to watch for dolphins...got coffee from the restaurant.. and spent the rest of the day watching the ocean, snorkeling in the coves, and making those really tough decisions- where to eat, how long to nap, and whether it was really necessary to get out of our chairs ever again... and what to order from the bar!
Where to eat
Breakfast was wonderful- xtabi's lobster benedict would be worth CLIMBING up their cliffs to get to!!! We mostly ate at some of the wonderful places along the cliff road for lunches and dinners- the steamed lobster at 3 dives, and the curried conch there are to DIE for... other favorites were Miss Brown Sugar's (across from Home Sweet Home) lobster omlette and her banana pancakes-also don't miss her seafood platter!- Spice and Spice for curried loster and chicken- and for their brown stew chicken...and as strange as it may seem, Home Sweet ome has great lobster pizza for 500 J!...
Our stay there was so fabulous, in fact, that we called the airlines, our work places back in the states, and our friends to say we'd decided to stay a few days longer...just couldn't bear to leave!
Our sincere thanks to the management and staff- thanks to you all we came home totally decompressed... and counting the days till we see them all again in August! Soon come!

This was our first trip to Negril and staying at xtabi was the highlight of our trip. My wife and I loved the hospitality, and found the staff very accomodating. The rates were very good, and the facilities were great. We really enjoyed the help that we got from Andrew. He was the lifeguard at the resort, and really made us feel comfortable. The food at the resort was good. Three dives jerk is right next door( Best on the island) so we ate there alot.
I would definately go back.

We stayed two weeks at Xtabi and absolutely loved it. It was clean, has beautiful grounds, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and Xtabi is in a great location. We loved being on the cliffs and snorkelling every day.
We really relaxed and enjoyed every moment.
One of my loveliest memories of Jamaica will be breakfast (french toast and Blue Mountain coffee) every morning on their terrace on the cliffs. What could be nicer. We would stay there again if we ever return to Negril.

We decided to stay in the cliffs area in Negril and chose the Xtabi because of its amenities, attractive description and reasonable rates, but beware! We were robbed the first night we were there. Someone came in through our bedroom window (while we were there sleeping) and stole some money. Luckily for us, they weren't interested in passports, credit cards or cameras - just cash!

When you arrive at the Xtabi, the staff aren't very forthcoming about their facilities/amenities/services. We received no information regarding their restaurant/bar, nothing in terms of what they offer for security (they do have safes - which we certainly used after the incident), what they have in terms of recreational activities, etc. Besides being able to take your money, the staff don't seem to be very well trained.

The problem was that our room was located on the ground level and the windows have no screens or bars, so it's very easy for an intruder to come in through the window if it isn't locked. We were so wiped from travelling, we hadn't bothered to check the windows and hadn't thought much about security (besides bolting the door). So, in some ways, were we lucky because we only lost a bit of cash. What bothered us most was that whoever it was entered the room while we were there! That was freaky! And this is a hotel with gates and security!

The manager and owner seemed sincerely concerned. We were moved to the second level, paid for a key for the security box and were a lot more diligent after that. It was our "wake-up" call. The security company was called in to investigate (what they could have done, I'm not sure). The owner also mentioned going to Kingston to purchase bars for the windows, but we don't know if that actually happened. We heard while we were there that these sorts of robberies were going on all up and down the beach at Negril. We were told that thieves do not take passports and such because if they are caught with them, then they're in big trouble. Cash cannot be traced.

Other than not feeling really welcomed in a number of respects, the Xtabi is in a good location, the rooms are decent for the price, the grounds are very nice, the snorkeling around the caves is OK and the restaurant was fairly good.

So the Xtabi is quite an OK place to stay - just be wary and be sure to ask about the safes in the room when you arrive.

This was our second time to Xtabi; the last time had been twelve years ago. It was exactly as we had remembered it! The views are amazing, and all of the people are soooo friendly! We have already booked our next vacation for Nov. '08, for 2 weeks this time! The managers, Allen & Janet, were very helpful.
Kingsley will pick you up at the airport and will take you on any day trips around the island. Nice taxi driver, who will make sure you have a Red Stripe in hand, as you leave the airport. (He was also willing to give us a bathroom break halfway to Xtabi! And then more Red Stripe.)
Be sure to stay on the sea side of Xtabi - the sea front cottages are the best and the rates are great! Of course, this is not like an all-inclusive, nor did we want it to be! It is very nice, basic accomodations - no phone, no TV, no air conditioning. With the ceiling fans and the sea breezes, you don't need air conditioning. If you can't live without some music or sound in your room, be sure to take along a small CD player/radio, as the only music is in the bar in the evening. The restaurant at Xtabi serves excellent food - be sure to try the Pumpkin Soup!
The main bartender at Xtabi is Donovan, and he makes the best island cocktails! What a nice, personable guy! He'll even let you plug in your ipod and play some of your favorite music in the bar.
Talk to Andrew if you want to go snorkeling. He took us snorkeling at night! It was such a great experience - he caught lobster while we were snorkeling, and then cooked it up for us back at Xtabi - excellent supper! He also took us to a nightclub in Negril called "The Jungle" - lots of fun!
You can walk along the cliffs to find some other great places to eat. Favorites:
"Three Dives" - right next door to Xtabi - great jerk meals, good prices.
"Pirate's Cave" - a short walk from Xtabi. Great place to go to snorkel and then dry off while you are having a great supper.
"Rockhouse" - a short walk from Xtabi. Great place to go to snorkel and then dry off while you are having a great breakfast.
There are plenty of places to go out on the cliffs and you can walk to a lot of them. Just be careful walking, as the drivers here are crazy! Find out the going rate for taxi fares to different places, from people who are staying on the island, and talk to the taxi driver before you get into the car. If he gives you too high of a price, walk away. If you do this, he will usually give you the going rate, or the next taxi cab will. Don't be pressured into spending more!
Also, be sure to hire a fishing boat to take you snorkeling at the reef and lunch on Booby Cay. Take enough "J" (the Jamaican dollar) along for a lobster lunch on the beach. Again, find out the going rate for this trip. You don't want to be over-charged for things on the island, but you should also be very willing to pay the going rate - remember, this is how the Jamaican people make a living, so don't be too cheap, and tip according to your service. We found that most Jamaicans are very willing to give you the best service and they should be compensated accordingly.
Remember, the pace here is slow (island life) so don't expect anything to happen quickly. Always figure a meal will take at least an hour or more, even a simple breakfast. It is a great chance to just relax, enjoy the views/atmosphere and talk to your travel partner or the people around you - both other travelers and Jamaicans. Once you are here a few days, you will find some very interesting things to talk about, as island life is wonderfully, and sometimes so oddly, different from life in the states. Enjoy!!
