“We had a wonderful time!”
Reviewed 17 November 2013

We were at Couples 11/9-16/13. The staff was great and made you feel welcome. While things move at a slower pace, that's what we needed to get away from it all. It is not the most modern deluxe resort, but the rooms are clean, the food and drink plentiful, the beach and the water is beautiful. The dive program is outstanding. It rained a few times in the evening, which I hear is to be expected at this time of the year, but the rains happened in the late afternoon and were over in time for you to enjoy the golden sunsets. The mornings are amazing! Get up early, stake out your spot on the beach and enjoy. This is a low-key resort, which is what we were looking for. Other resorts blast loud music and announcements, which Couples thankfully did not.

Room Tip: We had an Ocean View in Block 7 on third floor. If you have no problem with stairs, you will be trea...

We stayed at Couples Negril from Nov 4th - 8th 2013. I will start from the beginning:
Airport/Transfer: The Couples "lounge" at the airport is OK, but nothing to rave about. They serve Red Stripe beer and soda, and they have a restroom to use while you wait for your transfer. We waited about 20 minutes. The ride from the airport is about an hour and 20 minutes. We stopped for drinks once along the way at a local bar. Be prepared, these are not free drinks. The trip was not bad at all, with lots to look at and hear about along the way.
Check-In/Rooms: Once at the resort, check-in went pretty smoothly. Our room was not ready (at 5 pm) so they immediately upgraded us to a deluxe beachfront room in building 6. We ended up switching rooms the next day because we were right next to the main lobby/restaurant and that is also where they have entertainment each night. If you prefer a quieter room, stay further away from the lobby area. Trust me, it is loud! We switched to building 9, which was much quieter.
In my opinion the rooms are fine. Nothing fancy but clean, spacious enough, and the air conditioning worked really well. The bathrooms on the other hand are in desperate need of upgrading. I know they are in the process of doing so, and I hope they do this quickly so they are upgraded when we return! Speaking of returning, it seemed most people we met had been to Couples before. I think that speaks volumes!
Grounds/Resort: The grounds are stunning. They are meticulously maintained with many fish ponds and lush tropical foliage. This is a small, quaint resort - which we loved. You don't have to walk very far to get to the lobby, beach, activities. If you prefer grandiose and flashy hotels then go stay at the Riu or some other place like that.
Beach/Pool: The beach is very nice in Bloody Bay!! The water is warm, clear, and calm. You can look down at your feet and see tons of starfish. We loved the floating mats that were on every chair. They give everyone a red flag for beach/pool drink service and the staff are constantly coming by to make sure you have what you need. We loved walking up and down the large stretch of beach. The locals will approach you, especially when you leave the resort - but in our experience they were friendly enough and not overly pushy. We definitely felt safe. Oh, the pool is nice too, but with a beach this nice why stay at the pool?
Food/Drinks: This is our 4th all-inclusive and I can say that the food and drinks are very good here! I love that they have a drink menu at each bar with tons of choices! (Omar was our favorite bartender - great service and conversation!!) Our favorite place to eat lunch was The Beach Grill. The jerk chicken lunch was delicious - a must try! The dinner services were decent, too. The food was good. I preferred the indoor restaurants for dinner (Otaheite and Lychee). They were well-lit and air conditioned and I also thought the service was a little better.
Activities: The included water sports and activities are one of the main reasons we loved Couples and will most likely return! We did the catamaran cruise to the caves, the glass bottom boat tour (Bubblicious, our guide - was awesome!!), water skiing, scuba, and paddle boarding. You will not be bored here, unless you want to be - which is fine too!
Service: Another reason to love Couples is the staff. I loved how friendly, fun and laid back everyone was. They really want you to relax and have a good time on your vacation.
Tipping: We weren't sure whether to tip or not as they have a no tipping policy. We didn't see many other people tipping. We decided to tip when we got really great service and I hope we didn't get anyone in trouble!
Weather: One downfall of our vacation is that it rained every day! It was beautiful in the mornings, and almost like clockwork, around lunch time the clouds would roll in. It's Jamaica in November, so it's to be expected I guess.
Overall, we had an amazing and and memorable vacation and plan on returning to Couples one day! Maybe try Ocho Rios next! Jamaica is beautiful!

My wife and I traveled with another couple to this resort in the first week of November. I don't think that we could have had a better time. We had garden view rooms in block three, with a beautiful lagoon just steps from our door, and the room completely met our needs. (FYI: Renovation is ongoing. Block one had been reopened and block two was nearly there. Maybe Three is next?)

The beach is gorgeous, the water warm and calm (Bloody Bay is fairly protected from big waves), and weather was either warm and sunny, or warm and rainy. During our week, we had one afternoon where the rain continued most of the evening, and two afternoons with spotty showers. The rain was no big deal. Plenty of people stayed in the pool and at the bars, enjoying the tropics.

The best part of this place is the staff. The entertainment staff is amazing, remembering our names from the first day and making us feel welcome always. Thank you Carlos, Kiev, Okeno, Nita, and Sonya. We had great fun with all of you on the volleyball sand, in the Piano Bar, at the Cassava Terrace, and at the funny-money auction. Cathy and Kelly especially enjoyed their impromptu salsa lesson with Carlos.

The watersports choices are tremendous. Between the four of us we took two snorkeling trips, one sunset cruise, sailed Hobie Cats, paddleboarded, kayaked, snorkeled off the beach, and went water skiing. Great fun thanks to OOOOOOOmar, Captain Bubblicious, and especially Sheldon. (aka Nova Scotia, The Charmer, and Rusty.)

The food was wonderful. My favorites were the daily breakfast buffet at Cassava, the amazing snapper at Otaheite, and the jerk chicken at the Beach Grill. Friendly servers, too.

Bar service - these people are kept busy, especially at the pool. My two favorite bartendrers were Elkie and Ashena at the pool bar. Great personalities and awesome drinks!

The housekeepers were just as friendly, and did a great job. Wait until you see the clever towel art on your bed each day. Thanks Toni Ann and Marsha!

No real negatives at all. The only restaurant that was just okay for me was Lychee, but one of our party really liked it. The bus ride to/from the airport is about an hour and 20 minutes, and the drivers are friendly and get you there safely and quickly. They'll even stop part way to let you refill your Red Stripe if you want.

Overall, I would definitely return. We had the best time ever! That said, if you need luxury accommodations and a resort with five pools, fifteen restaurants, and a deserted mile of beachfront, this is not it. Couples is more compact and intimate. You will get to know a lot of the other guests, and you can be as active or leisurely as you want.

And if chirping tree frogs bother you, bring some earplugs. They are loud and can take a day or two to get used to. Now I miss them.

Thanks Couples!

Room Tip: Get a ground floor room - no stairs and you can step off your patio to see the lagoon. Also, I'...

Just returned from CN & we loved it! Yes, the buildings are not shining and new, but very clean and comfortable. We had a garden suite in building 9 which faced the gardens but we also had nice view of beach. Definitely the best beach with plenty of sturdy chairs, towels and cushions you could take to float on! Service was WONDERFUL! Vaden, our waiter one evening, made my father-in-law's 80th birthday very very special. Everyone was great! One of my favorite things was the hammock on our balcony. Food surpassed our expectations. The resort is truly the most inclusive with many activities at no extra charge! It's no wonder we met so many people who had stayed there before! Our daughter had a beautiful sunset wedding on the beach and the coordinators did a great job. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: The suites in building 8 & 9 are wonderful. If you are on the 3rd floor you have great views of...

My husband and I stayed at Couples from November 5-10th for our honeymoon and were overall pleased with our stay. To be clear, this was both of our first times ever being somewhere out of the country so please keep that in mind.

Check In: First off, let me mention that when you get on the bus to head to Couples that you have an hour and a half bus ride before even getting to the resort and if you are easily motion sick, you should really consider sitting in the front because the driving was more than interesting. When we arrived we were greeted with cold wash clothes which was a nice touch along with champagne. Once all of our documents were in we had to wait 45 minutes to even be shown to our room which I found more than a little long to have to wait to be put into a room. We rode the bus with a large group who evidently were not placed next to each other and so had to wait for the resort staff to fix that issue.

Room: This was perhaps the most disappointing part of our stay just beacuse our room was not at all what I was expecting. We were in building 5 which is a good ways from the dining options, pool, etc. and was not "ocean" view as we had requested at least by my experience with ocean view properties. The room was also pretty out dated and just not what I would expect for a "luxury resort." We spoke with several couples who had been to Couples several times and said they would not be returning just because of the fact that it was getting older.

Beach and Grounds: The grounds at Couples were immaculately kept and there seemed to always be someone working on something around the resort trying to make it look better and from my understanding they are renovating many of the rooms. The beach itself was also beautiful and there never seemed to be a shortage of chairs available. The resort also offers the service where someone comes up to your chair while on the beach and brings you a drink which was fantastic although by the end of the trip it seemed to be taking longer and longer for someone to check on what we needed once the red flag was up. The biggest issue with the beach I had were the vendors that walked up and down it constantly trying to sell stuff. By the last few days, I was very tired of hearing the same people selling the same stuff.

Service: We were very pleased overall with the service we received and want to give a HUGE shout out to the bartender Franklin and Ralph and Simone at the really nice sit down restaurant. They set the bar high for everyone else because of their impeccable service.

Food: The variety of food available at Couples was excellent and we really enjoyed the food at each restaurant. We waited until the second to last night to try the really nice sit down restaurant and really wish we had gone there every night as the food was just amazing!

Activities: My biggest advice is that as soon as you arrive make sure and go to the guest relations desk to check on activities and when they are offered. We didn't ever get to go scuba diving because it was constantly filled up and were there 6 days. We did take advantage of the glass bottom boat ride along with the booze cruise and had a great time on both. We also went to the Times Square Market trip and were pretty pleased with what was offered there.

A Few Points: -- TIPPING: We were constantly confused on whether to tip the waiters, etc. or not. We had been told by our travel agent to not tip but talked with many people who did and then talked to others who said the staff would get in trouble possibly even fired if they were caught accepting a tip. We found though, that service was a little better when giving a tip although it does add up quickly! WEATHER: We were a little disappointed with the weather although we are used to it being from Alabama and dealing with the afternoon storms we have here. Most mornings were beautiful and then an afternoon storm would come betwee 1-3pm and most of the time would clear up before dinner although it did get annoying having to walk through water puddles most every night so just beware of this when going this time of year.

Dear Cameon S,

We are very appreciative of you choosing our resort for your first vacation abroad. We do apologize that you were not able to experience diving in Jamaica, but hope that in the future you will. To clarify the tipping concern, Couples Resorts places a strong emphasis on our 'No Tipping Policy' as we believe this is an essential part of our carefree all-inclusive resort experience. A friendly 'thank you' or note on a guest comment card is however accepted. Looking forward to hosting you again soon.

This was our first trip out of the country and we were immediately disappointed. The resort is very small. We had an Ocean View room and it was very small. The bathroom was in urgent need of updating. The room was not even up to a Days Inn. Smoke detector battery went off in middle of night and when calling front desk service did not arrive until 2 hrs later. Restaurants were average and entertainment was blah. Definitely will never return and do not recommend.

Greetings Deborah,

Thank you for sharing this review on your recent stay at Couples Negril.

Couples Negril has 234 rooms on 18 acres of beach front property. Be aware that Couples resorts are boutique in style and always provide an intimate setting. Overall quality and service are elevated because of this. As it pertains to bathrooms, all are currently being refurbished in stages over the next year.

Couples Negril extends it’s apology for your smoke detector going off accidentally. Front desk notified engineering immediately and the issue was resolved as fast as possible.

It is unfortunate to hear that the resort did not meet your expectations. Nevertheless, your comments are appreciated and will be used to continue improving this resort.

Regards,

We were two couples both celebrating a 50th and 60th birthday. It was my 20th time to the island over the last 30 years. I did not chose this property, leaving that choice to the other couple. I was very happy they chose the Negril area, I was a bit disappointed with their selection of this property..but it was Negril. The rooms were comfortable and suitably equipped but a bit dated. Our next door neighbor that we met on our adjoining patios complained about their wall air conditioner that leaked down the wall all night and soaked their bags that they stored directly underneath. Our unit had broken slats that were inoperable and the air was directed at the head of the bed. My wife slept on that side the first night with a blanket over her head all night. I took that sop the next night and found that air blowing on my head all night uncomfortable as well. The tiles in the bathroom were also dated and had been caulked many times over the years. It is my understanding that some buildings were in the process of being rehabbed and that might resolve all the deficiencies at this resort. I will emphatically state that none of these issues stopped us from having a wonderful time! The resort grounds are meticulously maintained and are quite beautiful. We stayed at the St James in Montego Bay last year and although the St James was a much nicer room, Couples has the location! Although 7 Mile beach is not accessible from this property, as a Couples guest, you have access to its sister property, Swept Away which is about 2 miles away and is directly on 7 Mile. We took advantage of this and spent a day at Swept Away. It was a much larger property and with all considered, think we all agreed that the intimacy afforded at Couples Negril was more to our liking. The food...at every restaurant was excellent. A wide choice of selection and very nice presentations. In many instances even better than St James last year. I usually remember the names of one or two staff members that give exceptional service. This trip it was easy to remember Sophie at beach service, Omar who served us dinner on several nights, Camile and Tennyson at the swim up bar however ALL staff from the Housekeepers to the front desk were truly exceptional.
