“Wonderful staff at Couples Negril”
Reviewed 28 January 2009

We visited Couple Negril from 5th –19t January travelling with Thomas Cook from the Uk in premium class. (Travelled premium with First Choice last January and they knock spots off Thomas Cook by the way) Free drinks were very minimal on this TC flight!

After landing, cases came off very quickly as priority baggage within few minutes and we were directed to go straight the Couples lounge. Our luggage was stored whilst we were offered beers and coca colas and then about 8 of us were transferred by the hotel mini bus directly to the hotel. We opted not to stop off for a drink and the transfer took about 1-¼ hours. Traffic in Montego bay was quite heavy as it was early evening.

Once within the reception we were offered Champagne and cold towels and then taken directly to our rooms by the reception staff rather than find your own way in the dark! The luggage was brought by the bellboy in a buggy so not struggling with cases.
The reception staff made the checking in process very smooth and were all very pleasant and polite, making us feel most welcome.

The room was large and there was a huge double bed approx 6-7 ft wide, flat screen TV, mini bar and excellent air conditioning. Bathroom was clean with loads of fluffy towels, including flannels, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries. Sink was ultra modern but at 2’’ deep was a struggle to have a wash or my husband to have a shave in! I know some of the reviews have not been very complimentary about the décor however I think this is down to the strange mismatched colour scheme i.e. red cushions, blue and white striped chair, green curtains, yellow duvet, and the tired duck egg blue tiles.
There is loads of space to put your shampoo etc around the bath. Only problem for us was that the toilet blocked twice during our stay room 4206 - maintenance guys came and fixed it quite quickly.
Safe (electronic ) free of charge in wardrobe.
The mini bar has a personalization order form which you have to complete every day and leave out for the drinks service to refill your fridge . It was only after we’d been there fore 12 days we found out you can basically order anything – not just what is on the list to be put in your room so if you had wanted a bottle of wine or a different spirit rather than the standard drinks on the list, we could have ordered those instead. As it was, we had water, coke, beer, lemonade ‘Ting’ a litre bottle of Teachers whisky and a bottle of Appleton Rum.
I also ordered cartons of milk by adding it to the form, which were delivered without problem and the food and beverages telephoned to check it was delivered. I found this level of service to be excellent and unexpected.
There is a coffee maker which has coffee bags provided daily and a selecton of tea bags, sugars etc also refilled daily.
Each evening there is a turn down service and all the towels are replaced and a romantic card placed on your pillow.Fresh flowers are also in the room.
There are 2 large beach towels provided in your room on arrival and you can change them as often as needed on the beach . On leaving you take them back to the beach desk and get tickets to take to reception.
There is also an anti mosquito candle provided in the room which we used nightly and also kept the patio door shut at all times as there were ‘little bitey things’ out at night. We used insect repellant in the evenings.

The beach was absolutely superb – clean Blue flag status, thoroughly raked and cleaned every morning and all seaweed collected up by a small tractor. Sunbeds are comfy as they have the added bonus of the floats being on the top. There were a few singers on the beach and a couple of sellers of cigarettes but nothing much else and no hassle. If you didn’t want to be bothered if you just said no thanks they went on their way ‘no problem’.
Water sports were excellent- Scuba diving was offered directly by the hotel. There are boat dives at 0900 and 1330 every day other than Sat when it is a morning 2 dive boat trip. My hubby didn’t see anything really big a couple of nurse sharks and Rays-loads of little stuff- if you are expecting the same as in the Red sea then you will be disappointed. They did do an extra night dive dive which was an extra 50$.
You could go water skiing, sailing, windsurfing etc, there is a free Catamaran ‘Booze’cruise every afternoon for a couple of hours but beware it did go cold in the evening in January after you’d been in the sea at 6 pm !!
The pool has loads of sunbeds which were usually free as most people tended to go down to the beach – no one saved sun beds which was great !
There are 3 jacuzzis (one in a very private area down by the scuba diving pool and spring water pools.) We did not use massage facility but everyone who did raved about them !
Nudist beach is part of the hotel but separated by a fence – beware if this isn’t your scene!!

For English clients who are used to having a rep there isn’t one at this hotel. You are looked after solely by the ‘Couples Hotel’ staff, so you won’t get the usual welcome meeting and hard sell for tours. You can do absolutely nothing if you wish – which suited us fine. There is a trip to ‘Ricks café’ which costs $15 and you travel in the hotel mini bus, again, a very personalized service. (Would recommend Rick’s Café – fantastic !!- take loads of batteries though as the divers take ages to go in and you need to tip them small dollars –
T shirts are $30- drinks are very reasonable $2.60 for a champagne cocktail)

The food was all absolutely excellent so I won’t bore you with details.Did try the Lychee martinis and they are to be recommended !
All the menus for each restaurant are on display by the main restaurant every day offering a wide range of food – You only have to book in advance for the Otaheite which was good as you didn’t have to stress about where you going to eat days before.
Most evening meals are waiter service rather than open buffet apart from the Buffet evenings by the pool or the beach barbecue.
Choice of mashed potatoes or rice though with evening meals so don’t go expecting Chips with everything ! I only saw Chips at the lunch time served with the burgers or fish. (Would recommend Jerk burgers at lunch time !).
Only concern is that the food is not served from a covered refrigerated area other than salad bar so sandwiches /sweets /cakes are uncovered apart from some net covers and there are a lot of flies around the food, particularly at lunch times.
Breakfast offers a choice of freshly made fruit smoothies and champagne as well as coffees and choice of teas. Jamaican and English food including bacon.
Service in the dining room also can be a bit erratic- ranging from excellent to appalling not helped by the fact that each waiter seems to have their own job so a cocktail waitress wouldn’t serve you water or take dirty plates away and the food waiter serves your wine as well as waiting on you. The water waitress wouldn’t get involved in anything other than serving water!
This did sometimes cause a delay in receiving your drinks at the same time as your meal. Also if you opt for white wine initially the second wine glass is removed so if you want white wine for a starter and then red wine for your main course you then have to ask for another glass and different wine – then, they take your first glass away even if wine in it ! Very odd . I would expect the glasses to remain on the table and then be offered a choice. This might sound picky but this is rated as a 5 star hotel.

Rosemarie and Tennyson and Omar in the main bar were incredible. The service here was superb – I’ve never witnessed staff work so well together and also deliver drinks constantly without having to ask again – how do they remember ? Vodka martini cocktails served the same as in the Ritz in London – faultless and even single malt whisky is on the all inclusive. Cannot praise this service highly enough. Bailey’s, Champagne, Galliano – you ask and its there – speedily and with a smile –outstanding staff. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them.

The hotel tries really hard to ensure that the guests are well looked after. There is a weekly managers cocktail party where you are served canapés and get to meet the managers.
There is a lovely Beach barbecue with a steel band; Thursdays, a Bonfire on the beach and a guitarist singing love songs which is really romantic. There are numerous evening buffets put on around the swimming pool, with jerk chicken and returning guests special meals. There are fashion shows, cookery classes, and numerous other events – beach and pool volley ball and of course the numerous weddings going on almost on a daily basis on the beach.
One thing we did notice is that the age group generally of the guests tended to be older (even though we feel young !!) than you would see in for example Mexico.

You are given a feedback form on your last day to complete, which I’m sure they must use to continually improve services as the manager indicated she regularly read Trip advisor and eagerly checked on the hotels rating. Interestingly many of the staff had worked there for a number of years and the rapport between them all was lovely to see.

Tipping the staff is not allowed according to the literature at the hotel. I find this very sad as I would have liked to have given staff tips. I did try to give my evening maid a tip and she ran off saying she would lose her job !!

Well would we return?
Of the English and American guests we met, many had been going to the 4 Jamaican Couples resorts many times - some even on their 12th visit and I think this is a good indication of the standard of the hotel.
It is a lovely hotel made so by its staff who are some of the most polite and happy staff I have ever had the privilege to meet. The hotel is classed as 5 star – maybe compared to other areas in the world it would probably be 4 star but the staff more than make up for the star class and on courtesy alone the staff should be awarded 6 stars !!

This was our first visit to Jamaica and may not be our last- however the only downfall is that it is not the type of resort where you just go out and have a wander down the street or go shopping on your own as we did feel vulnersable.
For this reason alone we would probably choose a different destination, however we haven’t ruled it out for somewhere to completely unwind for a chill out when stressed in our very busy lives in the UK.

To those we met from the UK Lyn, Paul, Andrea and Andy- thanks for making the special 50th holiday one to remember !
To the hotel staff/chef – thank you for making my hubby’s 50th so special !!

(PS Remember to keep dollars for departure tax and check your weight as they were really strict on the return flight)

Enjoy - you will come back totally relaxed and if like us the flight is delayed coming to pick you up - we were fortunate to have an extra day at this lovely hotel !!

This was the most relaxing fortnight holiday that we have ever taken. Couples is romantic, good fun and highly enjoyable.

The rooms are basic, agreed, but you have a really comfy king size bed, bathrobes, beach towels and a mini bar (not all rooms have the bar) that is stocked daily to your specification. We had a garden room but it had a partial beach view to the left of the balcony and overlooked a lovey pond. both ours and our friends rooms were cleaned well and the turn down service with a "thought of the day" was also a nice touch. The grounds are lovely for walking around and Sharlton (Head Groundsman) and the Nature walk are an absolute must. I think with Couples you get out of it what you put in, we had a great time and found all staff and locals to be really friendly, ready to have a laugh and joke even if you were not interested in buying their wares! We were offered cigarettes, and all types of items on the beach, a refusal was treated nicely once we said we were not interested, the repeat chats with the locals were just pleasant fun.

Mischa the head chef is fabulous and the food is second to none, we ate in all the restaurants, the only improvement that we could make would be the asian fusion being more indian or oriental or whatever rather than trying to be a bit of everything. Mischa conducts a weekly kitchen tour (unique!) which is fascinating.

Do go out on the sailboats and the pedaloes and explore the bay, good fun and uses a bit of energy before you eat yet more!!The watersports staff are really happy to engage you in conversation and many of them have ambition to leave the island so have plenty of questions for you.

Cocktail of the day is a good way to try different drinks - or if you prefer a glass of champagne just go for it. The welcome of a glass of chilled champagne was particularly appreciated as the flight is 10 hours from the UK and then an hour and 1/2 transfer.

We went with friends but chatted to so many other people, lots of people are happy to chat and make new friends (as so many people seem to return, there is a good chance of bumping in to them again).

It is a brilliant get away from the cold UK January weather and we will definitley be going again.

Would recommend watching the diving at Ricks Cafe and shopping in Negril to get away from the resort, further afield trips are also great but then again the resort has so much to keep you busy (we discovered volleyball and table tennis talents we didn't know we had!) that you can just spend each day by the pool or on the beach!

My wife and I recently vacationed at Couples Negril for our honeymoon in November, 2008. My wife and I frequently travel on business both domestically and internationally so we typically stay at four and five star hotels. Couples Negril claims to be a five star resort but certainly does not live up to the rest of the world's standards.

Check in: Speedy and impersonal. You are herded with the rest of the bus load of people and given a quick rundown of the rules of the facility.

Rooms: The rooms are equivalent to a run down Comfort Inn. We booked a Beachfront Deluxe and were located on the first floor right next to the nude beach. We were able to be relocated to a second floor room on the opposite side of the property the next day, but it is ridiculous they would consider that room as one of their premium, select rooms. The stocked bar is nice, but you constantly have to run to get ice (which is in a tub on the first floor and usually half melted) and the liquor brands are subpar. One nice thing is the abundance of US TV channels.

Food/Drinks: Not bad, not great. The Asian restaurant was surprisingly good (in comparison to the others). The breakfast was always good and I always started the day off by eating too much. However, it would have been much more enjoyable if the buffet was located inside. The other restaurants were ok, nothing notable. The drinks were acceptable with the right amount of coaching. Tell them how you want your drink and the exact brand. Otherwise, they will try to give you the cheap stuff. The piano bar has Grey Goose, but it's hidden in the cabinet so you'll have to ask for it.

Beach/Service: The beach is definitely the best part of the property. The beach is beautiful and the lounge chairs were usually readily available. I can't say the drink service is quick, but it beats getting up and getting your own. The trick is to put up your flag when you are halfway finished with your drink. The service is moderately friendly and very inefficient. They tend to act annoyed when you ask them to do their job. When we arrived, they supposedly took our bags to our rooms. Thirty minutes later we discovered our bags four doors down the hall sitting outside.

Activities: I would highly recommend the sailing. We had a blast. The catamaran cruise was ok. They just play really loud Raggae music and try to shove shots of overproof rum down your throat. We didn't participate in many of the social activities as the overall crowd was much older, but there is the opportunity to participate in as much or as little as you would like.

Conclusion: I won't say this was a horrible experience. But, in the future, we will stay elsewhere when vacationing in the Caribbean. It’s all about your expectation. If you are expecting a five star resort, do not go to Couples Negril because you will be sorely disappointed. If you are looking for a three star property with a great beach, you will get exactly what you are looking for in Couples Negril.

Where do I start?!! An incredible holiday, making returning to the UK a very hard task. The beach was stunnning, with white sands (natural) and torquoise sea. the Jamaicans along the beach were incredibly friendly always chatting without the pressure of selling. the hotel was immaculate and always clean. the food was always extremely nice with the choice of jamaican, asian, italien, mexican, british (they even had york pud and roast beef one day!!). i found the majority of the staff very nice and always willing for a chat. the amenities were fantastic and the array of entertainment was fantastic. one night they had a jamaican buffet on the beach followed by a bonfire with an unbelievable singer (he should be famous!) all i can say is that you must be mad not to like this hotel. It is not that I havent stayed in luxurious hotels before because i ahve and i ahve to say this has been the best. paradise is probably the best word for this hotel and resort!!

We stayed for 10 nights, first time at an all inclusive resort for both of us, we read all the reviews, looked at all the photos etc. and booked it.

It was absolutely stunning, the pampering, the food, the activities, more fantastic dinners and the staff !
These levels of service are not in Europe, we found it all a bit overwhelming at first, and just couldn't believe that there were a couple of Americans making a scene out of really petty issues, maybe they are used to this type of luxury more than us.

We made full use of all the free equipment, sailing snorkelling etc. and really enjoyed it all.

The Couples people do make the holiday special, we returned to Montego Bay using Timair as a special treat to ourselves, well worth it !!

We have just returned from the most wonderful vacation. Hotel is brilliant, food superb and the staff are excellent! Special mention of thanks to Andrew in Entertainments, Devon, Marlon, Terena & Derek all located in the restaurant. Floy & Tassis on the au natural beach and Paul in the piano bar. Everyone was so helpful and friendly - they went out of their way to assist you & made sure you were having a great vacation. We visited all four restaurants for dinner and could not fault the food at all. We will definitely return to this hotel again as it is the best we have been to in the Carribean.

We stayed at couples in Jan for 2 weeks.
The plus point of the resort are definitely the beach - it is probably the best beach we have visited.
However the rest of the hotel did not meet our expectations. From other reviews I had expected the rooms to be tired - which they really well.
When we got to our room the shower did not work and the patio doors did not open and the security box did not work - we had to call front desk 3 times before someone would come to sort it out,. All we wanted to do was have a shower and have some dinner and go to bed as we had travelled from uk and had a long flight.
The room was not even cleaned very well by the housekeeper - I don't think the floor was mopped or swept the whole time we were there as you could see all the sand and water marks from us coming in from the beach each day. Some days the coffee cups were not cleaned and bin not emptied. It also annoyed me as on several occasions we had to wait until after 5pm for our room to be serviced. The turn down service is a complete waste of time - they literally turn down the bed and that is it!! We may have been unlucky with our maid but surely they should have a supervisor who should be checking their rooms.
Check in itself is not that great - at other all inclusive resorts usually they have all your details and check in is really quick - the rep does not provide the hotel with any info so on arrival you are handed a clip board and told to fill it in and give them a credit card- its a bit impersonal.
The food is not bad but it is nothing special - was very disappointed not to get more Jamaican food on offer apart from the trade mark jerk chicken/pork. We found the waiting staff very rude in the main restaurant - they very really not interested in providing a good service and were not very polite. Most mornings at breakfast the tables were rarely completely set - you had to grab things of other tables eg salt/pepper/sugar and cups. Some mornings we were never even offered any coffee and had to ask - eventually we stopped asking as the staff would respond by huffing and eventually banging the cups and saucer down on the table.
The red flag service on the beach is a good idea but again staff very not great - in the morning they went around and threw the flags at you - when we put our flag up to ask for a drink they come over and say 'wat you want' and wander away. I even saw one member of staff go over to a guest who had her flag up and she kicked her sun lounger to ger her attention and ask what she wanted. We also say alot of staff drinking on duty , they would be brought drinks from other staff and would stand and drink and smoke in full who of guests - were also offered drugs from staff and you could tell that some of them were high.
We rarely went to the piano bar as were not made to feel very welcome - the first time we went in my boyfriend asked for a beer and he was told - you'll have to go downstairs and get one we dont do it up here - the same went for mixed cocktails - did not see the point in a bar that did not serve these things.
The pool was also lovely and plenty of sun loungers on offer - the disappointing thing was there is no drinks service offered around the pool.
We were also kept awake most nights by the sound of staff shouting/laughing and I think pushing trolleys along the paths - they clearly have no regard for people sleeping at 1 or 2 in the morning!
I may sound that we are being really picky - but we paid alot of money to come to what is advertised as a 5 star hotel - and it is by no means 5 star - had it been advertised as 3/4 then the standards may have been acceptable. We stayed at the Riu Palace in Mexico the previous year - which actually cost less - and it was what you would call a 5 star resort!!
At couples there was no presence of may managers or supervisor apart from the managers cocktail party on a Monday - other than that there seems to be no one of authority going around to check that the resort is being run correctly.
