My wife and I and three other couples spent January 23 - 30 at Couples Negril. This was our tenth trip to the Caribbean/Cancun/Riviera Maya. Our traveling companions have traveled more than we have and Couples Negril quickly became, to all of us, our favorite resort.
We took the bus ride to and from the airport. No problem. Don’t think you’d save but an hour on each end taking a puddle jumper.
We had the pleasure of dining with General Manager Karen Lannigan and we found out (amongst other things) that they import cheese and beef, but just about everything else is “local”. ALL of their food was EXCELLENT. Don’t be afraid to get a burger at the beach grill and add a little jerk sauce. Delicious! Dinner for our group of eight took about two hours for all 5 courses. I would have liked it to be a LITTLE shorter, but hey, we were with good friends and just enjoyed each other’s company. As was mentioned in another review, the portions are smaller than we are accustomed to in the States, so order something from every course. If you ate at the dinner buffet, it was quicker and more casual.
The one thing we did miss a little was bananas. According to Head Groundskeeper Charlton (don’t remember his last name), Hurricane Ivan wiped out the banana crop on the island as well as damaging about 100 trees at Couples. Even with the damage to some of the trees, the grounds were beautiful. The aforementioned Charlton took us on a little “flora tour” of the grounds and showed us many interesting and lovely plants. He pointed out that the southern half of the resort was more manicured, while the northern half was more “au natural”.
Even though we got one of the less expensive garden-view rooms farthest from the beach, it was still only a minute’s walk away from the beach. We’ve stayed at some rather large resorts, but loved the cozy size of this one. We stayed in a ground floor room and had a small patio with a table and two chairs. The second and third floor rooms had a balcony. The rooms are plenty big and well kept. Besides the regular maid service during the day, the maids also came by in the evening and turned down our bed and gave us fresh towels, if needed. Nice touch. Some other reviews mentioned road noise when staying in a room at the back of the resort, so we left our windows closed and left the AC blower on for ‘white noise’ and had no problems, mon! One of our fellow travelers opened their windows at night and turned off the AC. They heard the occasional car go by, but it didn’t bother them much. Water pressure was a bit of a problem in the early evening, but the resort is aware of it and is trying to remedy the situation.
The beach was beautiful and kept clean. Even if you didn’t have a ‘red flag’ to signify that you needed something to drink, waitresses were still on the beach and were happy to get a drink for you. The water temperature of the ocean was a little cool and the pool was colder yet, but we’ve found this to be the same everywhere we’ve been this time of year. The hot tub sure got used more than the pool.
Was it perfect? No, but very close. I don’t think a perfect resort exists – at least an affordable one.
With this resort, as well as any in the Caribbean, when you get there, RELAX. Slow down. The sooner you get to the point that you are not ‘walking’ but ‘strolling’ the better. You will then be on Caribbean Time – a better place to be. Like our bus driver said, there are no problems in Jamaica, just situations.
All in all, a great place to stay. Laid back and fairly quiet. No loud music or screaming kids. We are already planning to return next winter. A special thanks goes out to GM Karen, Charlton, Cleon (omelet maker extraordinaire) Alain (water sports) and Teisha (bartender).

Thanks for your website, Tripadvisor!

We visited Couples Negril for the first time in January. We have been to the Caribbean many times and this was our third visit to Jamaica. The beach is wonderful and the pool is large with a good swim up bar. Unfortunately the beds on the beach and around the pool are hard plastic and there are not nearly enough cushions to go round. There is also a lack of shade round the pool, the umbrellas are very small (not everyone can sit in the sun all day). Our room was in great need of refurbishment. Some of the floor tiles were broken and dangerous and the bathroom although I am sure it was clean it was so badly worn that it looked dirty. The food in the Cassava Terrace was unimaginative and the choice not great and although the buffets looked nice nearly all the food in the dishes was cold. The service for a la carte eating was not very impressive and even then the food was not what I would call hot. The best food and service was in the Beach Grill in the evenings. The fine dining restaurant was also good.
We have stayed at resorts of another well known all inclusive group and expected Couples to be at least as good. Unfortunately the accommodation and choice and temperature of the food and other points mentioned left Couples Negril lagging behind

I am going to keep this simple. This was our third trip to Couples Negril in the last 2 years. We have traveled to many destination in the Caribbean and we now compare every trip to Couples Negril. Couples knows what it takes to make your trip the best and they do it. For a tropical beach getaway they are number one in our book. The staff are the friendliest you will ever find anywhere. No one had their hand out for a tip. The food was great, the drinks are endless, and the beach is absolutely beautiful. If you choose Couples be sure to get certified as a diver before you go and take advantage of the diving while there. You will kick yourself if you don't. The dive team is the best. Enjoy Mon! Everything Irie!

As so many others have stated, Couples Negril is an incredible place. We were there from 1/27 - 1/31 and wished we didn't have to leave. Here's a breakdown on the various aspects of the trip:

Ride from airport - About an hour and a half, which included a short stop for restrooms, drinks, etc. Remember to tip the porter who takes your bag to the van, as well as the van driver...they will remind you they are not part of the "all inclusive", nevertheless. Found the drive to be a great way to see the "real Jamaica"....I felt it made you appreciate both the resort and the natural friendliness of the Jamaicans all the more. During the drive we were given a running monologue on the flora, fauna and politics of the island. When you leave to go back to the airport at the end of your stay, the trip is shorter (no break stop), and quieter (no commentary). Upon arrival at the resort we received a cold towel and a glass of champagne. Red Stripe and soda were provided free at the airport.

Rooms - Just as pictured in the brochure and on the website. Clean and functional. Bright, vivid colors and plenty of room to hang clothes. The layout was great, and everything on the resort was mere minutes from you.

Food - Found the food to be great. Made-to-order omelettes, smoothies, and waffles in the morning, as well as a huge selection of fruits, cereal, and other breakfast items. For lunch you could dine at the Beach Grille and have a burger or jerk chicken or eat in the main dining room and have freshly made Caesar Salad, various meats, breads, fruits and salads. For dinner, the reservation-only Otaheite Restaurant is incredible. Most of the tables are for two, with comfy lovechairs to sit in. Dinner is a five-course affair, and service is impeccable. On Fridays they offer lobster tails in addition to the regular fare. However, if you can't get reservations there on Friday, the main restaurant serves lobster that night as well. Certain nights are "theme nights" with a bountiful buffet of foods...Saturday is International Night and fresh caught grilled marlin was on the menu along with freshly prepared pasta, Jamaican specialties and a cigar bar. Other nights the main restaurant does a five-course dinner with lots of options. There is also live music performed on the stage in the main (open air) restaurant.

Drinks - Plentiful and good. Red Flag service works like a charm. There is a total of 4 bars to choose from. At the nude beach, you can serve yourself beer, champagne, soda, or a variety of hard liquors. It is all kept stocked and cold.

Water Sports - Alot to choose from. Hobie cats, scuba diving, snorkeling, glass bottom boat tours and waterskiing. We went on a night dive (available for $50 at the resort) and had a great time. If you're interested in that, just let them know at the dive shop and they can set that up.

Nightlife - This is not a huge party location. Although there is nightly entertainment, it tends to be rather tame. However, that is fine, as most couples are here to enjoy each other and spend quality time together.

Daily Activities - From Beach Bingo, volleyball and water polo to ice sculpting demonstrations and Couples game shows, there is a myriad of activities you can join in each day. Activity sheets are posted in various locations.

Safety - Felt one hundred percent safe. The beaches are patrolled by security, and security guards are at each end of the beach as well. You can walk to the other resorts, but must check with security at each resort. Helpful hint: If someone asks you if you smoke, they're not referring to cigarettes... There is a barrier in the water that keeps out the jet ski vendors and the like, so you will not be approached by any of these people, but can flag them if you'd like to rent a jet ski. There is a free catamaran cruise on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday that leaves at 3:00 and gets back around 6:00. Since the hurricane and the loss of Rick's, the catamaran takes you to Pirates Cove, where, for $2.00 you can dive off a 40 foot cliff into the ocean. The trip includes beer, rum punch, soda, etc. as well as a performer entertaining you with Jamaican music.

In summary, we found that Couples delivered on every promise. We are looking forward to returning to Couples next year as "returning guests" when we will get repeater perks including massages, t-shirts, etc.

We just returned from Couples Negril yesterday and we had a wonderful time. The beach and ocean were just amazing. So here is our advice if you are planning to go to Couples Negril:

-- GO! Book it now.

-- Take the quick flight from Montego Bay to Negril atleast one-way. The views are just awesome from the air and we got to stay 3 hours longer on our last day since we weren't driving to the airport.

--Be sure to book a "Ocean Front " room on the Ground Floor! Our glass doors and patio opened directly onto the sand. It was worth every penny to see the ocean and beach from your bed.

-- Make dinner reservations in the fine dining restaurant. The food was great eventhough it is bit more stuffy.

Overall we just loved the vacation and had the most relaxing time. Don't expect the Four Seasons and you will love it too. I just wish we could have stayed longer!

We went to Couples Negril for our honeymoon after extensive research on other all-inclusives in Jamaica and Mexico. When we got there we were not disappointed. Staff was wonderful...service was excellent throughout our stay. They really worked hard to make sure you were having a great time. Contrary to other reviews, towel service was excellent - we had new towels at least once if not twice a day. The rooms were nice, clean, and comfortable - just as pictured. The food was great - we especially loved Otaheite - the service and food there were superb. All the activities offered also exceeded our expectations - be sure to take advantage of the sailing, boat trips and scuba diving. Overall it was the perfect place for our honeymoon. We highly recommend it!!!!!!
