“Good average 4 star hotel”
Reviewed 19 January 2012

I have stayed here twice over the last 5 years. I hear there is new management and things
are improving since. Here are my Pros and Cons
PROS
Great location ,quiet walkable beach with no hagglers.
very calm waters, shallow
resort is not that huge, so all ammenties are easy walking distance
Impressive lobby and lounge areas
you can bring your kiddies and its safe.programs available
Good jerk chicken
Nice average rooms.
Good friendly service
Decent animation
Average quality food....
Good watersports
stocked mini bar, but not high end spirits.
CONS
some rooms are right at the rear of resort facing employee quarters...unattractive and noisy.
Food was not exceptional....just average.
Not advise for adults with no kids. Better stay at an all adults resort for better rest and relaxation.
Beds could be softer
pushed together for king.....
bedding a little rough...
no decent wines
Always ask for a room closer to the beach or pay for an oceanview upgrade or you may be stuck
way at the back of the hotel.
Overall good value if you pay around $1,500 per person all in. Not worth any more.
My next stay will be right in Negril on 7 mile beach in a basic room . Looking forward to a most
wonderful gastronmic experience of my life going a la carte from the little beach hut restaurants
to the cliffs.....no more jailed in all inclusives for this dude...at least in Jamaica.

Arriving into mbj was annoying but once we got to Negril I was happy again!

It was a $100 dollar cab ride and an hour or the (fail for me) but we got a lot of history on the way!!

Check in: Reception staff friendly and efficient.

Rooms: Were actually suits and so cute and sure they can use some updating but for the most part very beautiful! Housekeeping was great and one day we got a towel animal which was very cute! Kept our dispenser stocked along with beer and other drinks!

Staff: some friendly and some are just dry. For those who were very friendly received a lot of tips from us! So shout out to Alva, Garon, evette, Karen, jermaine, sylvan and a few others I can't remember at the moment!

Activities: I wish there were more to do at night. The hotel basically shut down at 2am but the cubano bar upstairs which is 24hrs! So perhaps with friends that you meet you can have your own party! Or take a $5 buck cab ride next door to riu club hotel to their disco! Onsite entertainment was good I enjoyed the show and dancing.

Food: I didn't like getting up to get in line and make a reservation for one of the four restaraunt. But Krystal was the bomb.com oh yes the tapas the ravioli and the fillet was amazing! I won't forget the food or the fact it was my birthday and I got engaged all in one! Buffet in the Negril dining area was good at breakfast (coffee is so good) and just ok at dinner! I did enjoy the drink themes upon entering and then entertainment sometimes while eating!

Miscellaneous: On the beach of course they sell weed and people do buy. A simple no thanks will do and they will walk on! The beach of course is so beautiful and I enjoyed the party on the beach with the band! Went to some club called American Pie and it was another fail! I couldn't blend in as well there so I left after maybe 30 minutes!!

To finally sum this up I wish I would have stayed 7 days instead of 5! (fail again) We will be back though for sure!!!!

We had a group of 18 stay from Dec 30 - Jan 6th 2012. The staff, hotel and beach are totally amazing. The food was low on most days espically the lunch buffet (either burnt or empty plates) staff arguing behind the counter and wait lines to be seated for lunch. Had lunch one day at the sister hotel Riu negril and it was the best lunch we had all week-fresh clean and dishes were replenished at all times. We often had a late dinner and we paid for coming in at 8:00. The food was not fresh and alot of empty stations...new years was a fiasco for us. we were given 2 choices of dinner times (6:30 or 8:30) we chose the later one. the food that we did get to taste was very good but again we did not have the same choices as the earlier group. very disappointing. we had a choice of 2 bad wines and we had to complain to taste a third bottle which we liked but the hotel ran out of it as they did with dessert at the italian restaurant and on several other days at the buffet. When i did stress my concerns the manager bought out the chef to argue with me about the quality of the food...ie-pasta under cooked. The staff make this hotel a pleasure to return. The rooms are cleaned daily and excellent but the "king" size bed we requested were 2 dbls put together, we had to sleep on one bed or sleep separately for risk of falling between the beds. The grounds are beauitful. Best beach. Management and how they deal with your concerns was the most stressful part of our trip. I gave the hotel 4 stars for the location, grounds, staff and cleanliness. We have been here 2 TIMES AND WE ALL AGREED THAT WE R TIRED OF THE RIU MANAGEMENT AND ATTITUDE We will not be returning for awhile :(

Room Tip: If you want a proper king size bed ask for a garden view. The other rooms (ocean view/fronts)have 2...

We did not particularly want to return here after last year's unsatisfactory stay, but the elderly member of our party has limited mobility and the beach at the Riu is very firm so she can walk on it independently. It is also absolutely gorgeous and because the hotel is located on some sort of inlet or bay, the water is calm for swimming. It takes forever to get into deep water, so this is a good option if you have children with you.

You can tell there is a new manager as certain aspects of the resort were definitely much better. The service staff was much more courteous and accommodating. The food in the specialty restaurants was quite tasty - I can certainly recommend the sea bass everywhere and the lamb chops in the steak house were very good. The annoying restaurant reservation system is still in effect, but I don't know that it is any worse than the options featured at other resorts we have stayed at. The frozen drinks are too sweet, and the liquor is not good quality, but there are always options if you want to indulge.

The major thing that still needs to be addressed is the bedding - the mattresses and pillows are like rocks. The sheets need updating; they are rather rough.

Room Tip: If you want a real king size bed, make sure you ask for it. We were 3 couples and 87-year-old grand...

Loved this place!
Beach was great! I really pick vacations based on the beach. No rocks, clean clear water. The beach was nice to walk down and check out vendors selling all kinds of stuff.
The rooms were very clean no complaints there at all.
In fact they upgraded us we had a garden view room and there was a hole in the sheetrock in the shower and we told the front desk. They told us to see them after dinner and we did well, they decided to move us to a different room but ocean view! It was awesome! We sat out there every night.
The food is good ...Iam a picky eater and didnt have any problems. The jerk chicken stand on beach was pretty good.
Dont buy cigs in the lobby 11 u.s. dollars! Instead, go down to the beach and there is guys selling cigs at half the price.
We been to Jamaica a few times and I would definitely say this was the best resort yet!

Long review follows, but overall very good. There from Jan 6 to 13.

-very safe place. Observed the hotel security intercepting two young men in the lobby who did not have brackets and did not belong. This was done very calmly and with little fuss. Top marks for taking care of their guests.
-Beach is fantastic - very clear, calm and shallow water (warm for Jan), sand very fine - no rocks (only Turks and Caicos is better and we have been to a 12 different Caribbean resorts). Saw stingray and starfish in only 4 feet of water! Sunset is not to be missed, nor are the amusing vendors and travelling musicians that strole the beach. They are very friendly and not at all pushy.Very laid back.
-Overall, cleanliness of rooms, restaurants and other public areas well above average.
-Room was very large, appreciated the towel rack on the balcony for drying swim suits, as well as the loungers instead of simple chairs! Safe is large enough for laptop plus other stuff, lots of drawers and hangers for clothers. Minibar and speed rail for drinks were well stocked. Lots of lightening and fan and ac that worked well. A very good selection of tv channels (many different languages - german, spanish, english, italian, and french).
-Shortage of towels was mildly annoying as was the clock that seemed to reset itself every time we left the room! Strong offensive odour of bathroom was evident every time we entered the room, but disapated within two minutes of the AC and ceiling fan being turned on (these do not work when you are not in the room - bravo for saving electricity). Had a 'fake' King size, which is two 3/4 beds pushed together, and made up separately. Apparently there are real King size beds in some rooms. Would request this next time.
-Very good light blocking drapes and patio door was very good at blocking out the noise of the stage. If you like to sit out on the balcony anytime in the evening it is best to request a room in any block other than 3.
-Got locked out of room once when the battery in the lock ran out and the maid missed the warming orange blinking light (if we only knew that was a warming!). Wayne, the chief of maintenance came within 40 minutes to fix it! This is fast by island time!
-Steakhouse and italain a la cartes were very good, but getting in line at 7:30 am to get a reservation was no fun. Fusion and Japanese were ok, with small portions at these restaurants and so so food. Lack of music and way too bright lighting did not do much for ambiance. If you dine at the italian at 930 you have to deal with the music of the stage next door. Jerk shack had very nicely cooked chicken.
-Breakfast buffet very good, try dining on the patio for a quieter experience. Buffet at night was just average. Would suggest it is worth eating every dinner in either the Italian or the Steakhouse.
-Drinks very good. chocolate martini at the lobby bar very nice. Not keen on the chugging contest one afternoon at the pool. Yes, people drink even at family resorts, but a chugging contest seemed a bit juvenile. This was not spring break.
-The free wifi in the lobby area was pretty reliable. When there were problems they quickly dealt with resetting it. Wished it was available in the rooms too.
-Entertainment was average. Michael Jackson show the exception, as it was very good. The water areobics was fun, and quite the workout of the arms! beach volleyball and soccor games were popular, but the pool volleyball was a non-starter as the pool is too shallow and small for a proper game. Walks along the beach to the other riu were a good workout (30 min return) and an eye opener too. The vendors between the resorts are very friendly and you get to see how much nicer the beach at Riu Tropical is. Plus, you get to see the lobster traps at the various eateries along this stretch. Wished we had tried the Office of Nature.
-Definitely ask for upgrade to ocean view (we emailed the resort in advance and got an upgrade to room 3320 which had a decent view. Rooms 3319 and 3318 would have better views.
- Pools smallish, not for people wanting to do laps or get any exercise. One is devoted to the pool bar and pool loungers. Loungers by the pool was comfy (padded cushions) and easy to get even after 9am).
-Staff are top notch! Never unpleasant, always a smile, great to watch how they love the little ones. Not a single fault with anyone in any of the departments.
-Would we go back? Yes, but would make sure to avoid the buffet for dinner, to get a room with an ocean front and a real king size bed.

Room Tip: email resort ask for room upgrade to ocean view. Worked for us. Tip your housekeeper and she will...

Just returned from this all inclusive after 4 nights. Very nice rooms that are spotless, excellent food, excellent beach ( blue water) with almost all the staff very attentive to your needs. Stayed 3 nights at Holiday Inn Sunspree prior before moving onto Negril. This hotel is for parents with children as food is average to below par and beach is very small man made. Bathrooms very small and in need of upgrade. First morning at Holiday Inn had alot of bugs in bathroom shower tub. The hotel moved us quickly to another room. If you want a beautiful beach with no one bothering you to buy their mechandise the only place to stay is the RIU in Negril because it is in Bloody Bay, a private beach, so no peddlers are allowed and lots of security on the beach. If you go to 7 mile beach in Negril be prepared to be hassled constantly to buy from the vendors on the beach and they will not take no for a answer. I know this because I met a couple on the airplane home that told me they would never go back to Negril for this reason. Finally, transportation from Montego Bay airport. Dudley at BIG SHIP TOURS AND TRANSPORTATION (website), he is owner provides excellent service. He is clean cut, speakes well, is on time, and his vehicles are well taken care of.
