“tired resort”
Reviewed 5 February 2013

Visited 1/28/13 for 7 nights. Very tired resort. Checked into deluxe beachfront room with butler service and was not given the floor that was requested through our travel agent and a pre arrival call from Sandals. Had to move the next day. First room's refrigerator was not working so all beverages were warm. In addition, the items we requested were not stocked. The food was average at best. Breakfast and lunch were better than dinner which was at best poor. Portions were small and the ingredients were low quality. The pools were not heated and the ocean was full of seaweed. Other beaches in the area were clean ,so this was a problem uniuqe to Sandals.
The resort is very narrow from front to back with a major highway bordering the property. Although our room was oceanfront, we had a 50 foot grass lawn between us and the ocean. Directly behind us was the highway which woke us each day to the sound of trucks ,cars and motor bikes.
The butlers were friendly and did what we asked.Since the resort was full, having the butlers gave us access to everything we wanted. We heard that it was sometimes difficult to get prime dinner reservations or pool and beach chairs from other guests without a butler.
We tried to make the best of it and the resort staff were friendly and accommodating.
In conclusion, be wary before you book this resort. We have enjoyed the Iberostar Grand hotels in many locations much better.

Room Tip: Focus on rooms in the front of the property

This resort is clean, beautiful and fun! The food was better than other all inclusive a I've stayed at. The commute from Montego Bay airport was fine; over an hour but they arranged a van service for us. We attended a wedding while vacationing at this resort and the wedding ceremony and reception were both on the beach and both perfect! The only complaints that I have are that not everything is all inclusive as stated. When you arrive they tell you that wifi is not included. I forget the exact cost but I believe it was $1 a minute or $50 for the week, which just seemed like an unnecessary hidden cost. Also, I did not care for the resorts particular timing with meals. All inclusive means you should be able to eat when you please. They ended breakfast everyday at 10am and didn't start serving lunch until 12:30. When you're on vacation you may not want to get up at 9:30 everyday to rush to breakfast and then if you miss it waiting until 12:30 is quite late for lunch to just begin. Why not have a continuos brunch or hour break in between? There was a small pizza station open as well but it seems that is all I ate every morning and it wasn't good. Also, the resort advertises that there are many bars. Actually there is a pool bar and then 1 bar where you will spend every single night that you're there. If you don't mind that then great but it got repetitive! Would have been nice to have a few more options! The beach was beautiful and I liked how there were beach guards walking around ensuring that the locals selling items on the beach weren't harassing us so that we could actually relax and enjoy the beach! Pool was really fun and I loved the Italian restaurant on the beach as well!

We arrived January 27 and stayed thru February 3. Sunday to Sunday has smaller lines at customs..Rooms are old but adequate. PROBLEM. with electrical, none in bathroom to work with curling irons Room bar was always stocked but twice didn't get room cleaned.(should have tipped maid early in the week) No one mentioned that, but we unplugged the clock by the bed and my wife was able to do her hair before dinner at night. IMPORTANT, a man had a heart attack on glass bottom boat, was rushed back to our beach and unloaded. Lucky that ER nurse was on the beach where they landed. It did not appear that any of the staff was prepared for this. She worked extremely hard doing comprehensions for close to an hour. I think it took a half hour for someone to find a defib to try. When the rescue unit arrived they were of little help. The man died, wife was by herself with no help. Did not appear that any Sandals rep went with her in emergency unit. No idea what happened next.

We just got back from our honeymoon and had THE BEST TIME!!! We stayed at Sandals Negril for 2 weeks in January 2013 and the weather was great with the exception of a few rainy days. When we arrived at Sandals we were immediately greeted by friendly staff and a drink. They took our bags to our room right away and after filling out some paperwork we were given a tour of the resort. Thank you Terrence for the great tour and for bringing us pizza! ALL of the staff here were extremely friendly and truly enhanced our honeymoon experience.

CLEANLINESS: All areas of this resort are extremely clean and well kept. The maids did a fantastic job of cleaning our room and left us cute bed decorations. The gardens and beach are so beautiful. The sand is always raked and free of garbage. The staff also did a great job of quickly removing empty glasses and dirty plates from the beach.

ROOM: We stayed in a basic room - we thought it would be more fancy and modern as it is a Sandals resort, but it didn't ruin our vacation as we were hardly in the room. The bed was a little uncomfortable.

FOOD: We were impressed by the food at ALL 7 restaurants. Our favourite restaurant was Barefoot by the Sea for the overall experience – eating on the beach with your feet in the sand during the beautiful Negril sunset was great! At Bayside, our favourite food was the pepper shrimp and jerk pork/chicken on the Jamaican buffet nights, soo delicious!! We also enjoyed eating at Bayside when there was entertainment on the stage. The Bistro Grill was quick and delicious, shout out to Big Show and Michael B for their great cooking and smiles! Our favourite dish by far at Cucina Romana was the mussels! Shout out to Christopher, Faithlyn, and Jermaine for their great service!

BARS: There was a great variety of alcohol at the bars and we never had to wait for a drink – the service was friendly and quick! Must try drink: Jamaican Smile! Shout out to Sandra, Kadian, Khani, Micheal, and Chris – our favourite, most friendly bartenders!

ENTERTAINMENT: It seemed like there was always something going at this resort – the beach party, reggae party, steel drums, and Moulin Rouge Show were our favourites! The dance floor by the piano bar was always a lot of fun. The Playmakers were so much fun and did a great job at entertaining the guests (we learned some great dance moves!). Shout out to Kevan, Vanessa, Willie, Tashawna, Oshane, Petal, and Shenae – you were so much fun!

BEACH: There were a lot of water sports to take part in and the snorkelling was great! Big Poppa and Ricky were so fun and entertaining! The water is unbelievably clear and the quality of the sand is amazing. We always found a great spot to lie on the beach and the sunsets are unreal. The photographers are always on the beach asking to take photos of couples – Dale and Mandella were our favourites!

We had the best honeymoon and can’t wait to come back!!

Room Tip: Beach front rooms have an amazing view and less noise from the highway!

Just got back where there Jan 28 - Feb 1, this is my third time to a Sandals, stayed twice in Montego Bay around 7 years ago so it had been a while. Absolutely loved Negril and will be going back next year for sure. Ill break down my thoughts...

Drive there from airport: Not bad at all, couple small towns but roads werent rough and driver gave us alot of history about the areas we drove through. Took about 90 minutes.

Room: We had just the standard room with a balcony. We faced the garden...would of loved oceanfront but honestly we were barely ever even in the room. Housekeeping was great, always clean, fridge stocked and flowers on bed.

Beach: Amazing. Long, plenty of chairs though all with shade were reserved by 8am. We didnt mind as we just soaked up the sun but get up early if you want a shade tree. We always got one in front of the piano bar, they brought us drinks out to our chairs every day. You can actually walk off the resort and find a great lobster place ($20 --$25) and they will grill you up a huge lobster..very good. Also there are ladies who offer massages there, much cheaper than the spa on the resort.

Staff: Above and beyond...they were all so nice. Bartenders "Doctor" Leroy at the beach grill, Shawn, Jason and Donovan at the piano bar were great...funny and will get you anything you want. Seemed like no matter what room you paid for they made everyone feel like they were at the top level...

Food: Have to say we were impressed with the food...had something for everyone. Kimonos was our favorite for sure. Lots of fun, great food and got to sit and talk to other couples. Got the lobster tortellini at Cucina Romano and it was great...The Sundowner was good as well. The buffet is just that a buffet....but was good too. Beach grill and pizza place were great stops during the day...no real complaints. Maybe we are just easy to please.

Entertainment: After reading the reviews expected it to be dead...but actually it wasnt. Most nights the piano bar was full...had karoake one night, dj with music another, another night everyone sat around the piano and sang. Usually most people had retired by midnight but was good to meet and talk to people after dinner there. Guests there are from all over, all different age groups...very friendly and there to relax and enjoy themselves. Met some great people.

Overall we loved it and will book there again.

Room Tip: Oceanfront is well worth it

We just got back from here. We arrived Jan 26 and left Feb 2, 2013. We had a beachfront walkout concierge room. Room number was 5152. This was the best room ever. Just open the door and you are literally feet from the beach. The room was maybe on the smaller size but it worked for us and we were not in it very much.

I will try to give my honest opinions on the following catergories.

Food: I thought it was fair. The buffet was the normal everyday stuff and did not change much. We ate at the Italian restaurant. I ordered spaghetti. They were out of spaghetti pasta so I had to eat angel hair pasta. I thought it was good, not great. My husband ordered bow tie pasta and they brought him back pasta with peas, meat sauce and big cuts of onions. Probaly a 1/2 a cup of onions which he didn't like.
We also ate at the Sundowner and they have great ribeye but they hardly give you anything with it. What came with mine was one carrot and a spoonful of potato.
The pizza place was ok. A little bland.
The Bistro probaly was the best with burgers, jerk chicken, nachos, fries, onion rings etc. They had this chili that was real good.

Beach: It wasn't the biggest but I would say it was ok with us. Nice sandy beach. Water was calm. It did have some seaweed in some spots but we just walked around it.
The vendors do walk up and down the beach but the rangers are always there to hurry them up if you don't want to be bothered with them. We never seen any of them get rude, just tell them no and they keep on walking.

Entertainment: There is virtually no entertainment. We seen the steel drum band one night, but that was about it. Be prepared to entertain your self at night with drinking, pool. They do set up a small little disco area by the piano bar and they did Karoke one night but that was about it.

Housekeeping: When they finally showed up they were very good. 2 times they didn't show up untl after 3pm.

Now, I know it sounds like we didn't like it but we really did. We found all the guest really nice and had a good time talking and meeting new people. We would talk to the same people everyday and had long conversations.

And, they really do want you to enjoy yourselves. They pull your chair out, bring you drinks on the beach and what ever you need the will try to go and get it.

I have visited Sadals Negril several times now and it holds a special place in my heart.First I'd like to thank all those lovely people who looked after us on all our visits to Negril. I know you'd like me to name names but you are all special in our hearts. For the travellers reading this review this is a lovely resort full of people who make this resort so special. The resort it'self is small and no very wide. The beach is lovely clean soft sand and the sunsets are exceptional . The staff are out early every morning racking the beach and clearing any debris from the night before so you wake up to the perfect beach. The gardens here are lovely blending into the apartments a credit to the constant hard work of the many gardeners. The rooms are clean and tidy a credit to the maids and behind the scene staff. Some of the apartments here are in need of upgrading which I understand is slowly taking place. The main problem at the resort I feel is road noise in the apartments near the main road behind the resort, which can affect your nights sleep. As the resort strip is not very wide I feel sound proofing is needed when apartments are upgraded. There are several restaurants here most offering some lovely meals in particular the Italian and the Sundowner, I didn't rate the Japanese where meals were cooked in front of you. I'm a great lover of Asian foods but here to much showmanship by the chef and so so food as a result. The pizza bar here cooks some lovely pizza's ,it would be nice if it was larger as always in great demand . At Sandals there is always a bar or restaurant open as well as places to chill. During the day boat trips, hobby kats, water skiing, diving all free of charge and the staff eager to help and great fun.I hope to return to meet those fantastic staff when the rooms are upgraded .

Room Tip: I haven't stayed in all the room types as there are 14 different grades, but avoid the apartment...
