“Sandals Negril Is Our New Paradise Home Away From Home!!!!”
Reviewed 2 July 2009

I don't even know where to start in describing the absolutely AMAZING experience my wife and I had at Sandals Negril!! From the DELICIOUS food, to the Five Star 24-hour room service and friendly staff, to the seemingly endless activities and entertainment, we had such a GREAT time in paradise that we did not want to leave! And to put the icing on the cake, all the luxury and amenities we had at our fingertips was included in the price of our vacation. We didn't have to worry about carrying around cash or credit cards on this beautiful tropical resort. Everything we requested was given to us with a smile (with no hidden fees or tipping). Sandals Negril is TRULY an all-inclusive Luxury Resort. Sandals Negril is our new paradise home away from home!!!!

We went to Sandals Negril for our honeymoon. We had never gone on a trip of this magnitude. We loved it! The staff were more than happy to work with you and do anything you wanted. They were extremely helpful throughout the week we stayed. The food was fabulous. I am a very picky eater and my husband is the complete opposite. There was a lot on the menus to suit both of our taste buds. There was a lot of activities to participate in. We also extremely enjoyed the off site tours that we participated in. The Catamaran was not part of the inclusive deal but was the best money we spent. We had a blast. We went on the Canopy zipline tour as well and loved it. The only downfall was that the room was a lot smaller than I had anticipated. I didn't care though because you are rarely spending a lot of time in the room. It is a gorgeous place. I would definitely go back.

We went to Sandal's Negril for our honeymoon from June 8-15, 2009.
We chose Sandals because we were lead to believe that it was la creme de la creme for all inclusive, romantic resorts. We were also told that Negril was amongst its best resorts. "All you need is love...". We would have had the love anywhere - what we were after was decadence and we felt that by paying over $5000.00 for one week that we would have had just that. In reading the other reviews, it seems that we would have had to pay well over 7000.00 to get the holiday we thought we had purchased. When making our reservation, we upgraded to the deluxe ocean-view room, (3rd level of room categories). When we arrived, our room was not ready and when it was - an hour or so later - it was incredibly disappointing! Our room was in the 3000's section and was directly across from the Four C's restaurant. The restaurant was the main part of the view and it was incredibly noisy. The room itself was small, dated, worn and not worthy of 3 stars in Mexico! The bed itself was old and scratched and the matress and linens were very sub-par. We were also located right beside the main, (party), pool which provided a lot of noise from both patrons and staff around the clock. Exhausted after 11 hours of travel, I managed to fall asleep quite early, and my husband who was so annoyed with our room went to the main desk and complained. The night manager was actually very empathetic, (sorry can't remember her name), and the next morning we were moved to a new and much improved room on the 3rd floor of the 5000's block. This raised the question however, of what level of room we were actually put in in the first place?! There was such a difference between our first and second room....which one is actually considered the "Deluxe, Oceanview room"?? Needless to say, this got our holiday started on the wrong "sandal".
We found the staff generally a bit too laid back. It took us a few days to adjust to the culture as at times, it felt like you were bothering them if you asked for something. For example, at times you could stand at the bar for a good 5 minutes before being acknowledged. After a day or two we got used to the Jamaican pace and how it influcenced the level of service they provide. Another interesting observation was the the General manager was on holidays when we first arrived. Upon his return - there was a marked improvement in service, food quality and presentation. Interesting! Overall the staff was friendly and we were expecially pleased with Darren, Julian, bartender Donovan, the Grill staff and general manager Horace.
The main pool was a bit of an "Animal House" atmosphere at times. The crowd there seems to be mostly young twenty-somethings and there's a lot of tequilla going down. We watched a very young, (ie teenaged), bartender pour 40 ounces of tequilla and rum down a young guys throat in under 5 minutes. Then do it again 5 minutes later. The kid promptly puked his guts out and had to be taken away for medical attention. (This occured while the manager was away). I was shocked at the lack of responsibility of the bar staff on that one - he seriouisly could have died!
We found the dinner portions to be quite small. Appetizers were less than appetizer sized...the seafood for one for example: one clam, one mussel, one shrimp. Obviously portion control is a way they control costs. The breakfast and lunch buffets were great. Lots of variety and always fresh fruit, fish and seafood available. The Four C's made excellent pasta to order and the staff there was great. The fish was the best bet at the Sundowner and the Barefoot. My husband ordered the pistaccio crusted chicken at the Barefoot and got an appetizer-sized portion of chicken nuggets - I kid you not and no pistaccios in sight! The snapper I had though was excellent. Filet minion at any of the restaurants was certainly not what we would call a filet here at home - more like flank steak. Casual food at the Grill was always consistent and served up with a side of song and dance from Dwayne and the gang. I have to say that the property in general and bathrooms across the resort were immaculate. The staff to guest ratio is excellent - about 350 staff to 450 guests at capacity. We learned after a day or two that you just had to ask for what you wanted. My husband and I wanted to have a bottle of wine with our dinner, (not just poured glasses) and also occasionally took a bottle of wine or a couple of glasses to our room. We were also surprised that there was no beer or wine in the fridge in our room. We never got our honeymoon package, (bottle of champagne and breakfast in our room). There is definitely a huge gap in the service guests receive at the regular and concierge level - but the brochures and website only highlight the concierge-level suites and service standards.
Highlights: Finding the "quiet pool" and piano bar. The ocean and sunsets were every bit as gorgeous as the pictures. The monday-night beach BBQ was amazing and the food extrordinary. Water pressure and AC levels in the room were excellent. Drinking cold red stripe at 10am and Pina Colladas at noon, and wine and champagne in the evening and never waking up with a hangover, (something to be said about being totally relaxed and lots of fresh air). Meeting some great people including our new and like-minded friends from Toronto who made our trip a blast and having the pleasure of meeting a fascinating couple from Brooklyn, Bernard and Isadora who we wished we could have gotten to know better. A performance by local guitarist/vocalist Shayam Moses was incredible. I would liken him to "Seal". This is a very talented musician. I bought his CD that evening and it is our new favourite. I enourage people to check him out. Breakfast with General Manager Horace, who was a fascinating and intelligent man. The Jamaican culture night on our last night was a fantastic show of song and dance that really enlightened us as to the warmth and history of the Jamaican people.
Overall my complaints are not with the staff or the place even. The resort is just guilty or mis-representation. This was not a $5000.00 holiday and would have been satisfying for $2500.00 The resorts are showing their age and I fear Sandal's is riding on a perhaps once-deserved reputation. Would we go back? Not unless we got the concierge deluxe suites with butler service promoted in the brochure for a more reasonable price. We plan to go to Riu - probably Cuba where we know we will get the decadence we were after for a lesser price than Sandals.

Staff treated us like honored guest, very friendly, professional, eager to assist and please us. Honest- We misplaced several items-all were turned in to lost and found. Felt we could have left our doors unlocked. We sensed that staff was having fun doing what they do every day making it fun for us. Many remembered our names after the first meeting. Michael (worked in recreation) was always fun to be with and kept us up on special entertainment events. Horace (assoc manager) was friendly, fun and involved.

My husband and I stayed at Sandals Negril for our six year wedding anniversary. We chose the swim up river suite with butler service. I have to give this resort a 10+. We travel every summer and this was actually our fifth Sandals resort. We both fell under the spell of this intimate home away from home. The food at the restaurants was truly fine dining and yet there were more casual options available that were tasty as well. The accomodations were beautiful and luxurious. We had a wide array of activities and entertainment to choose from whether it was the nightly show which varied accoding to that day's theme, singing along in the piano bar, or dancing the night away. Daytime activities abounded as well ranging from volleyball to sea kayaking to couples games. Our favorite pasttime of course was laying on the beach and enjoying the amazing ocean vista. The sand is like sugar and the soft ocean breezes make for a day of sheer bliss. The spa at this resort provided us with one of the most indulgent couple's massages we have ever had. Finally, our butlers, Basil and Myron, went above and beyond the call of duty to make our vacation special. Whether it was arranging a romantic candlelight dinner or surprising us with a flower petal infused bubble bath complete with champagne for two, they were always there to help us enjoy our vacation to the fullest. Finally, we have to compliment the staff. We have always loved the Jamaican people but this resort was the creme de la creme. From our driver, to the playmaker Michael, and even our housekeeper, Shauna, we have never been made to feel more like family. Just remember, when you get to Sandals Negril and they say "Welcome home, mon!" they really mean it!

My wife and I just returned from Sandals Negril this week where we celebrated our Honeymoon. We had a great time. The beach in Negril is beautiful and we spent a great deal of time swimming around in the water. The food at the resort was great, especially the breakfast buffet in the main dining area, and the Barefoot by the Sea restaurant. Just be aware that Kimono's is a Benihana-type restaurant where you dine at the same large table with other couples or groups while having a chef cook in front of the group. My wife and I had expected something a little different, but it was still enjoyable.

A definite highlight for us was renting the cabana bed on the beach with butler service. Our butler for the day, Jerome, was awesome, and he kept us fully supplied with food and drinks for the day. We would highly recommend this for all honeymooners. We also had our first couples spa experience at the resort and we regretted waiting until our last day because it was so great that we wanted to go back to the spa. The rest of the staff was very pleasant and helpful. We were a little disappointed in our room,I think it is listed as the Ocean view honeymoon suite or something like that, primarily because the bathroom was pretty much like a normal hotel bathroom, but the rest of the room was great, and the house-keeping staff did a great job keeping it clean and hospitable for us.

We mostly kept to ourselves, but talked to a few other couples who were also having a great time. It did seem like the main pool area was the party area where larger groups hung out, but my wife and I did not really hang out there much.

Overall, we had a great experience and I highly recommend Sandals Negril.
