Merrils Beach Resort III
Ranked #56 of 80 Hotels in Negril
Reviewed 25 March 2008

We just returned from one week at Merrils II and loved it (see Merrils II for that review). We were originally scheduled for Merrils III but when we showed up they only had a one-bed room for our family of four and at first did not see why this would be a problem. They had given our room away to a group of three who had booked a one-bed room but changed their mind at arrival. Luckily Merrils II had a room so we walked down the beach with our luggage to check in there (the 3 Merrils resorts are near each other along the beach). In the end it was the best thing to happen as Merrils III we found out later from the staff is where they put all the spring break college kids. While I was sorting out the room situation my 16 and 10 year old went to look at the beach and were offered both alcohol and pot by some of the students! There is a large club right next to Merrils III and the music was blasting all day. Families who were unfortunately staying at III wandered up to II to use the beach. We did eat there one day and although the other two Merrils enforced a loose dress code for meals (shirt or coverup), anything went at Merrills III. Overall, unless you are a college student, avoid Merrils III in the spring and opt for one of the other two.

just returned from merrils 3 for a 10 night stay. although we were the only americans there pretty much of the time, we had a wonderful experiance. the restaurant was steps away to the water, and the views were spectacular. the food was fair to good. the restaurant staff could not be more polite and met every request with a smile. charlie , the team leader, was gracious and sincere in the service he provided us. the bartender jay jay was the best. merrils 3 should be proud of their staff. also, because this is an all inclusive resort with tips included, the jamaicans certainly appreciate tips!!!! we will be definitely going back to merrills. it is located beside yellow bird, and originally was called sandi san. we also upgraded to a superior room. it was a corner unit in the building closest to the beach. air conditioning was excellant. the housekeepers were in everyday doing an great job. each room has a safety deposit box. the charge is $25US .we also ate at merrills2. the staff rotates between merrills one, two and three. i also must say that we stayed at merrils for a very very reasonable price. i would highly reccommend this resort for anyone!!

we are 3 girls, 2 italians and 1 american just returned from 5 days at the MERRILL"S
We stayed at MERRILL"S II the first 4 days then we move to MERRILL"S III. They are litteraly few step on the beach one from the other. MERRILLS II has a pool which is an amazing privilege especially for chilling at night.(the beach is not really safe).
At MERRIL"S III the room are nicer
I realized once i got there that MERRILL"S are advertised a lot trough the tour operators in Italy(same like the RIU resorts in US); this is the reason why most of the guests are european. I would say 80% italian, 10% german. Not so many USA guests.
The food is healty and very european, nice buffet and amazing home maid pastries :). Not a lot of "typical" jamaican plates (not even the Jerk chicken) :(
Also, the 10 t0 10 open bar is "useful". However after 10 pm there is no way to get a drink at the resort. The resort basically shuts down at 10 pm so u would need to go outside the resort for food or drink after 10 pm.
The staff is ok., not one of the most fast and accomodating one, sometimes rude and usless(especially at the front desk).
No spring breaker's kind of guest, nor family's oriented.
Overall I would say it was a nice experence staying there because of the central location of the resorts along the 7 miles beach (it is basically in the middle)the "no greasy" food and the young laid back kind of guests.

We stayed at Merril's II in 2005. We really liked everything. Enough so that we booked again for 2006. What a mistake that was!!! The food was just horrible, and I do mean horrible!! Service just wasn't even close to what we experienced last year. No coffee or wine refills without asking. They ran out of food several times. I am talking the main course. Such as if they were having roast beef, etc. If you were not down 45 mins before they stopped serving you would be out of luck. My husband and I both got food poisening the same night after eating the same food. We were sick for almost two days. The had ONE white wine and ONE red wine. That was the extent of their wine selection. The white wine was so sweet that you could not drink it. There were flies on the food much of the time. We seemed to be the only American couple at the motel. (Merril's III) I ask the bartender if there were ANY other Americans at our motel. He said that he thought there might be one other couple. All we saw were Italians, so there was no one to talk to. The three restaurants catered to the Italians. Pasta, pasta, pasta!!! There was a terrible odor on the grounds of Merrils Three. It sort of smelled like burning smoldering garbage. The smell would be a little better on some days considering which way the wind was coming from. We were never able to eat at that restaurant, because of the smell. We were forced to one night because of the rain. It was not pleasant. I admit I do have a sensitive nose. My husband said that yes he could definately smell it, but it didn't bother him as much as it did me. But who wants to smell garbage burning just a little bit??? ALL THE TIME???? We have been to Jamaica at least eleven times. I am not some spoiled little American novice from the states that expects an Apple Three rating to give me accomadations that you would expect in the states. We have a saying, "It's Jamaica!" We know not to expect too much, unless you are staying at a Sandals or Couples. But this place should NEVER have been given an Apple Three rating!!! It should have not even been in the Apple book at all!!! You pay for all inclusive, and you get poor food, poor service, poor alcohol, and BAD air to breathe!!!! Also the bar closed at TEN O'CLOCK!!! You could not even BUY a beer after ten o'clock! There was no partying, no games, no mangers party, no ANYTHING for entertainment. Very little sun on the beach in the AM. The sun rises behind the trees and motels and it would be almost noon before any of the chairs would be in the sun. Of course that is not the motels fault, just thought you might like to know. The beach towels that the motel provided were terribly worn and full of holes. Mostly they were just large rags. The motel advertises a hot tub on the internet. Yes, there is a hottub, but it hasn't worked for two years. This is JUST not a good place to stay. How everything could go to Hell in a year is a mystery to us. There is a really cute place in the same price range, (I was told) just a short walk from Merrils, called Negril Garden's. We had friends from our home town staying there at the same time we were. They loved everything, and the bar stayed open till 1:00 AM. Good food, good servive, good alcohol. Our friend that were staying at Negril Gardens said that a couple came down from Merrils Three trying to get a room at Negril Gardens, because they said that Merrils Three was so bad that they just refused to stay there. I can't tell you how many times at dinner that we would witness people get up in disgust at the food selection and walk out, believe me this was not just our opinion. After we got home a couple that we had met at Merril's last year emailed us and said that they had heard the same complaints when they were there this year.

The rooms are not luxurious for sure, but confortable, with a small balcony and a great view on the sea and the beatiful garden.
All the three restaurants of the resort serves good food, and the all-inclusive bars are greats.
Respect!
