“Ok place for your money with some reservations”
Reviewed 17 March 2011

I just returned from Negril and stayed at the Shields. I stayed in a 2 bedroom with another friend and another friend was in a one bedroom.

Location: The hotel is the 2nd to last one on 7 mile beach when heading towards the roundabout. There's not much in the roundabout area except for a supermarket, ATM, and Burger King so that's not a plus in regards to location. It would be better to be closer to the middle of the 7 mile beach area so that you're closer to more food/bar/activity options. The hotel is right on the beach. The beach was short in this area with only about 10 yards of sand to the ocean, which was less than a lot of the other hotels there.

Rooms: The rooms are clean and basic. Shower worked fine, decent pressure. No toilet issues. The AC worked well. One issue is that there is no room safe and the door locks are very basic. I was concerned about theft. You can rent a small safety deposit box for$3/day that's by the restaurant near the pool. This should be free. They were small and could only fit documents though and not a laptop. We didn't have any theft issues though. They also wanted to charge my other friend $3/day to have a fridge in his room. This should be included. I believe he paid $100/night for a one bedroom. We paid $160/night for a 2 bedroom. For this time of the year, that rate was reasonable. We also did have a full kitchen in our 2 bedroom which was nice. Only the 2 bedrooms had this.

Guest Fee: They charge you $30/night if you bring a guest back to your room after 11pm. They must have cameras somewhere b/c my friend hooked up with a girl and she came back after midnight. There were no guards anywhere to be seen when he came back to the room but 2 days later, they told him he owed them $30 for the guest that stayed over. Book your rooms for the max # people allowed b/c then you can have that many people in the room with you. If you book for 1 person, they'll charge you for bringing someone back. If you book for 2 people, but it's just you, than you won't get charged. Personally, I don't think any hotel should have this fee unless the "guest" overstays their welcome more than a night. Part of going on vacation is having fun and that might mean having an unexpected guest in the room for an evening. What's the harm?? It doesn't cost them anything more. They just do it to make more $ off of you.

Staff: The front desk staff was kind of gruff and not too friendly. We had to loosen them up with some jokes. The restaurant staff, maids, and maintenance guy were all friendly. Our airport driver said that this place has poor customer service and that a lot of the smaller hotels are the same way. He recommended the all-inclusive places, if you can afford them.

Restaurant: The food was decent at the pool restaurant and priced competitively with other hotels. Service is slow but that's typical anywhere in Jamaica.

Misc: There's free wifi but you can only get a signal in the lobby. They give you beach towels at the front desk. Beds were decent.

Overall: It's fine for a roof over your head, but I didn't like the attitude of the front desk staff. I think there are better places to stay in better locations towards the middle of 7 mile beach for a little more money and likely with a nicer staff. Personally, I'd make sure I stayed somewhere with a room safe as I've heard of theft issues in Jamaica even though we didn't have any problems. I should have looked into that before staying there.

Most of the staff was very friendly. Colin was extremely helpful – making sure luggage was carried to room and carried fridge up stairs into room. The AC did not work in my room, so Colin made sure I was moved to a room with working air conditioning, since repair person would not have been able to service it that day. Quaint balconies on first floor.

Food was okay.

Loved the location on the beach.

I would recommend this hotel to anybody because it has everything wot you would want in a no frills hotel with a reasonable priced rooms and with a pleasant atmosphere.
The staff are second to none which would go an extra mile for you and trust me that is very strange in Jamaica with my past experience.

Near to Negril town this hotel is a little but very nice place on the beach like every hotel in Negril.
Rooms, food and service are good. You can relax in the swimming pool. The staff is kind and care customer safety. It's one of the cheapest hotel but it offers what you need during a jamaica vacation,
It's close to Bourbon Beach which offers reggae music nights at low price and at 5 minutes walking on the right side of beach there's Risky Business for dancing thursday nights with music of all genres.
Shields Hotel is at 5-10 minutes driving from Rick's Cafè where you have to go before leave Jamaica. The driver of the Hotel can take you wherever you want in negril. On the beach you can have a deal to make trips to Black River, Sweet river and so on.
Enjoy Jamaica!!!

We stayed in this hotel for 10 days with a 1.5 year old baby and we had a great time.
The room was good and the sea and the pool great.
Staff were extremely friendly and we felt very much at home.
Close to the village and supermarket so no need to take a taxi.
Great place to stay !

We came upon Shields by luck. Our flight was delayed and we did not arrive until 10:00 pm in Negril. We were originally booked at White Sands.but the room was so awful that I could not stay even 1 night there and there were no other rooms available. The manager of White Sands called several places and Shields had one room available. We went to Shields, asked to see the room and booked it at 11:00PM. The room was not fancy. We aren't particularly interested in luxury. Our main priority in a room is that it is clean, and large enough so that we don't feel cramped. The room was perfect. Nicely decorated, hot water, and a good a/c. The bed and pillows were perfect for our preferences. When we arrived, we had not eaten since 12:00 noon The kitchen closes at 10:00 and the staff had just finished cleaning up and were ready to go home. They were kind enough to stay, reopen the kitchen and serve us anything we would like from the menu. We ate overlooking the beach. A perfect ending to a horrific day! The food was great. The atmosphere is warm. You feel like family. The staff greets you by name and the other guests were friendly and easy to get to know. The food was delicious. A full breakfast was included in our rate. It was so filling that I usually went without lunch. Service was prompt and friendly. We had two maintenance problems. A light bulb burned out and the closet pole fell. The maintenance man arrived about 5 minutes after we reported the problem and quickly fixed the problems. Many thanks to the assistant manager, the maintenance and housekeeping staff and to all the staff at Shields for a vacation that we will never forget. Oh, I forgot to mention the great beach and crystal clear water with gentle rolling waves. Ahhhhhhhh...paradise found. See you next year.
