“Were quite pleased until a last day surprise”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

We stopped by Mikuzi looking for a place to stay to extend our P.A. visit (we were familiar with the place, as we had stayed in their Kingston lodging a few years previously). Chad, who takes care of the place, showed us around and rented us a 3 bedroom cottage at a very good price for three nights. We were traveling with our 2 year old daughter so it was important for us that she have her own bed. While it was far from perfect, we thought Mikuzi was a great value - as the proximity to Winnifred Beach is unmatched, and it had lots of little things nice to have (kitchen, patio, gardens surround, lots of neat little decorations). The sheets and towels really need to be replaced (holes and stains!) and they should be more diligent if drying in the sun. Most of the linens/pillows smelled moldy/mildewy and had mold spots on them; they seem to leave them on the line for days, letting them get wet again by rain, dried again, wet again, etc. In general, a few hundred dollars of investment could let this place really shine, but as it stands it's more like a hostel. We were happy to be saving money by staying here, we invested in purchasing our own towels, some detergent soap and scrub for the kitchen, and some deodorizer for the bathroom (it just felt it needed an extra layer of clean). We were quite pleased up until our last day, when we returned from a day at the beach to find someone else's bathing suit drying on the chairs outside our room. When we came into the cottage, we found many of belongings had been moved, and the room our daughter had been sleeping in was locked. When we found Chad, he explained he had rented out the room to other travelers. Had this been explained as a possibility, we would not have been as upset as we were. However, my husband SPECIFICALLY asked if he was renting us a room or the whole cottage, and Chad assured him it was for the cottage. Also, had it just been my husband and I staying here, I would have been less upset. But now we had no way to have our daughter sleep in her own room securely - this was very disconcerting for us. ALSO, Chad left all our belongings completed unsecured as the guests renting the room had full access to the whole cottage and our things while we were gone! As icing on the cake, the shower drain clogged the last night so the tub was about 6 inches deep with dirty muddy water after Chad tried to plunge it for a while. I think with more responsible management and a little better upkeep, Mikuzi could be a sweet spot, but it left us on a very sour note.

Me and my girlfriend visit Mikuzi every chance we get, its a lovely hide-away in the Portland parish. We enjoy the quiet, peaceful ambiance of the place as the environment is nature filled. Winifred beach just a short drive/walk from Mikuzi, love that beach. Otherwise, the rooms are suitable for the nature of the trip (a getaway) and the convenience of having a kitchen was also a plus. I definately recommend this place, perfect for a couple's retreat.

Stayed here for 5 days and I enjoyed it. The rooms were fair in size and affordable. Customer service was good Chad is a great host . Its not along walk from the beautiful Winifred beach and the night life in Portland is always a good adventure for any tourist. Breakfast and dinner was also good and affordable. Perfect getaway for couples or the loner like myself as it has such magnificent lush vegetation with a nice hammock for reading or just holding a snooze.

Great place, lush vegetation and very quiet (apart from the occassional all night parties in the neighbourhood and the omnipresent cicadas and frogs). Not too many mossies either (July anyway). Lovely rooms and a real good price. Gia is very friendly and allows you to treat the place as your own - e.g. there's a small kitchen available to use, and hammocks and easy chairs to lounge around in. Just 5 minutes walk from the each and some great BBQ cooking.

Planned to stay three nights in the large cottage, but left after night one, had it when we were invaded by ants, roaches, termites and a large crab in our bedroom. Bathroom toilet flooded and smelled moldy, only one working light bulb and one really foul smelling blanket provided among the bedding. Nice location within short walk to the beautiful Winifred beach, hope management can get some repairs done and get the place in order so guests can feel welcome.

We stayed there for 5 nights. The place could be really nice, but it looks like nobody took really care of it for quite a while. There were holes in the mosqito nets, cockroaches coming out of the drawer in the kitchen twice!!, lots olf mold in the fridge, oven with no gas to cook (poor and dirty equipped kitchen), dirty bathroom, which wasn't cleaned at all during our stay. There is one extra small kitchen place for all to use which also looked very dirty: after seeing the moldy left over of coffe in the machine we decided not to use it! Besides that the location is close to one of the best beaches in Jamaika. You walk about 10 minutes over an adventures trail to reach the Winniefred Beach, which is not touristik at all. Only the beach is worth it to stay at Mikuzies!

When my friend and I arrived at Mikuzi, we were immediately impressed with how cute and colorful the cottages were. We took a quick tour and decided to book two nights. However, once we got settled in the room we realized that it was filthy. tub had dirt and a used up soap bar in it. spider webs and dust were everywhere. when we tried to let down a curtain that had been tied up, there were spiders living in it. needless to say, we quickly retied it. This place has such potential. I hope they get it together soon.
