“A paradise experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2014 via mobile

We stayed at Mento and loved it's location. Secluded with a private deck and jacuzzi. We dined on our deck one night and at the resto, both of which were pleasant. The service for room dining is very slow and the menu offers no options for vegetarians sadly.

Hi PreeChee,

I'm very happy to note your feelings about Mento – just one of our 3 cabins that’s tucked away on the property.

The night you had in-room dining, we had a larger than usual crowd at the Bushbar, and, you’re correct, it did take longer than normal, to serve you. For this, I offer you my sincerest apologies.

I’m not sure which menu you saw, but for those with a preference for vegetarian food, we do have a number of dishes, including a vegetarian curry, rasta pasta – a sesame stir fry, mento stew – mixed vegetables with dumplings (my personal favourite!), lentil stew, tofu, and as I’ve said in previous responses, we’re more than happy to offer bespoke dishes for anyone who asks.

It was a pleasure hosting you, and we do hope to see you both again.

We very much enjoyed our recent stay at Geejam, our first visit to Port Antonio. We have traveled to Jamaica several times & continue to return because we love the relaxed vibe and the people. We stayed in "Ska", which was nicely furnished and has 2 decks, one with a hot tub and lounge chairs (a bit crowded) and one with a small table & chairs & a sofa type lounger which we loved. There is a nice view from the upper deck & you feel as though you're in a treehouse. The room is pretty private,( no one walking past) though we could hear the staff each morning at the restaurant before breakfast. This would be our only complaint about the room, as it wasn't as peaceful as we would have liked. The food at Geejam was wonderful! Definitely try the Jamaican breakfast, as it varies from day to day. My husband had it every day of our trip! The croissants were also wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed the jerk chicken wraps at lunch, and dinner was great each night. We did have dinner at the Trident once, and it was good as well, with a nice jazz band for entertainment. We also lounged by the pool there one day, which was lovely and overlooking the ocean. We had to go inside to get drinks several times, even after asking if pool service was provided, which he assured us it was. The Trident certainly has a different vibe than Geejam, more modern & trendy & not quite the same laid-back feel. Dinner there was more formal as well. Though lovely, we preferred the atmosphere at Geejam.
The staff at Geejam was awesome, always calling us by name and saying hello. Robert, Jason, GoPaul, and the rest were so pleasant & eager to help in any way possible. Only once did we feel shorted by a staff member, & it was at the beach on a day when GoPaul was off. The gentlemen there was not attentive & never left the beach hut, never offered us towels or checked on us the whole day - VERY different from the service we received from GoPaul.
The beach is across the street & down a long flight of stairs. There is no bar, but if you take your room cell phone to call Bushbar, they will happily bring down whatever you need, including lunch! The only downside to that is that we actually felt bad about ordering several times because of the long walk down.
We only did one excursion as we tend to just lounge & read when on vacation, and that was the rafting down the Rio Grande. Though it was a bit lengthy because of low level of the river at the time of our visit (2.5 hours), it was great. The lunch on the river was FABULOUS, with the biggest crayfish we've ever seen! It is worth the trip just for the lunch & to watch her prepare such a wonderful meal over what is basically a campfire - truly amazing. There are several "floating bars" as you travel down the river, offering to sell you beer, water, etc. Even though Geejam sent us with a packed cooler, we still purchased a couple & always one for our river captain as well. Be sure to take tip money on this excursion, as you will likely want some for your captain, for lunch, etc. Also, a wide brimmed hat would be advisable!
Our only suggestion would be to have guests only sign one check at the end of the day instead of multiple ones throughout. Personally, we prefer an all-inclusive approach, but when that isn't available, it is just much nicer not to have to sign for everything & constantly be reminded of how much you're spending. The bar will let you keep your tab open throughout the day if you ask. As other reviews have mentioned, the menu prices are quite high - again, the food was excellent, but the costs are on upper end.
We really enjoyed our stay at Geejam and would certainly recommend it to others. It is a beautiful resort with a genuinely friendly & wonderful staff, great food, and a relaxing vibe. One of the owners, Steve Beaver, even had our driver stop by the Trident on our departure to wish us safe travels & ask about our stay! Talk about a nice touch....

Hi Peachmom!

Many thanks indeed for all your kind words. We do everything we can to go the extra mile for all our guests, in order to try and exceed their expectations. Equally, I thank you for your observations, which will prove extremely useful in helping us improve our service.

I would like to offer our apologies for asking you to sign your bill after each meal, or at the end of the day if you’d been running a tab. We implemented this last year, simply to eliminate any confusion, as has happened in the past, if a guest forgets they’d ordered something, and then questions it. As you correctly point out, this wouldn’t be an issue if we were all-inclusive. But if we were, we wouldn’t be able to offer the current level of cuisine, which include bespoke meals – something many of our guests enjoy . I am happy you did too. We want it to be good enough to put a smile on any ‘foodies’ face, and at the same time, I’m told by many of our guests that our prices are very competitive, in spite of ordering our supplies from New York and Miami, when they're unavailable locally, or in Kingston.

You don’t have to feel guilty about ordering food and drinks when you’re on the beach! Our Bushbar staff have this down to a fine art, and are more than happy to bring it down. My sincere apologies that you were not looked after correctly on Gopaul’s day off. He does take great pride in ensuring that our guests have everything they need, and we will ensure that his 'stand-in’ on his day-off, offers the same level of service. The same goes for the Trident – a designated member of the bar staff has now been assigned to look after our poolside guests.

I’ve also reminded our staff of the importance of not disturbing the guests at any time, and I offer you my apologies for this also.

I very much enjoyed meeting both you and your husband, and look forward to welcoming you back, in the near future.
1love
Steve

We had an amazing time at Geejam and in the Portland Parish.

I would absolutely recommend this area and boutique hotel to those who are not afraid to take a little more time to get a truly relaxing and quiet alternative experience to the bigger, more-frequented areas of Jamaica. Portland Parish is VERY much "pre-tourist" (or post, if you consider the early heyday before the 70s) - there may not even be a t-shirt that says "Port Antonio" in print. But beautiful beaches, waterfalls, a river to float, friendly people, amazing jerk chicken/pork, street parties and kayaking to empty beaches are enough to occupy 4-5 days.

Just get a guide (message me for our man's number) to take you anywhere you want to go at a rate of about $40-60/day. "But I don't NEED a guide!" You kinda do. The roads are rough, poorly marked, and let's be honest... a guide will know the best spots. Don't kid yourself.

The Geejam's only pitfalls are a small beach, a lot of stairs and overpriced activity/driving fees. If you are fine going to outside beaches, just relaxing at their MORE than ample "waterfront relaxation area," don't mind the stairs, and have the aptitude to find a guide... then the place is perfect.

Room Tip: Room recos: We stayed in Drum & Bass (Massive deck, no awning, large room, big tub) and Ska (rou...

The wait staff was always very friendly and courteous and
The rooms were very clean and comfortable and each had a room safe for your valuables. Great maid service with fresh towels daily. Room service and their late night supper menu is great. The food at all of the restaurants (especially the Japanese) was outstanding! Wonderful breakfast bar with eggs made to order. Spotless pool and chaise lounges, floaty toys were abundant, and great unlimited drinks. The hot tub was very warm and roomy. Nice white sandy beaches and showers to wash off near the pool. There is a guy that is out between the pool and beach with a cart serving up jerk chicken and pork daily !!

The Geejam is a very special place! The location is ideal - "steep up in the mountains, floating above the sea…." Beautifully appointed bungalows are set in the lush tropical bush with breathtaking views of the ocean. On top of the hill is the Bushbar with more exquisite views and where delicious meals are served. The ambience and vibe are hard to match. There is a great bar and a pool table where guests can gather. One of the things that makes the Geejam so unique is the warmth of ALL its staff and their sincere hospitality. Getting around is so easy as they provide prompt car service to explore Port Antonio, the surrounding area and to take guests to their sister property, the Trident. It is an idyllic escape which also provides you with the opportunity to experience a more authentic Jamaica. We will be back!

Geejam is an idyllic and unique experience nestled in the hills of Port Antonio. The staff was friendly, attentive and patient. ( We traveled with a chatty 6 year old). We felt as if we were in a bungalow in the jungle, but with modern amenities such as WiFi,Netflix, sauna in bathroom and jacuzzi. Honeymooners might not ever want to leave their villa. The food and drinks were delectable. Bushbar blends traditional jamaican and japanese cuisine. However, there were pancakes, french fries and chicken fingers available for our 6 year old.

This was our first visit to Geejam and thanks to the staff( Robert and other wait staff and the drivers ) we felt as if we were visiting long time friends. We were privileged enough to meet one of the owners, Steve Beaver, who was as warm, unassuming and "hip" as his property ,Geejam. We have traveled the world ( Maldives, Vietnam, Thailand) and Geejam parallels those locations in beauty, luxury ,service and privacy.
We loved it so much, we stayed an extra day! And, we plan to return with other family members!

I had an amazing 5-night stay at Geejam in February 2014 and I can truly say that it exceeded my expectations. My aim was to escape from the hustle and bustle of London, relax and recharge my batteries. The natural setting, luxuriousness and privacy of Geejam sets it apart from other resorts. The food is of a very high standard and the chefs are only to happy to accommodate requests. The lobster and shrimp curry dishes were delicious. Having access to Trident Hotel was an added bonus - (excellent gym!!). I will definitely revisit Geejam in the not too distant future. The resort is private, the villas modern, grounds and beach immaculate and the service/Geejam Team are 5-star.

A special thank you to Newton for his excellent tour of the recording studio and to Robert for his attention to detail – second to none!

Room Tip: I stayed in Rocksteady which was immaculate and had a lovely view overlooking the Mack Bay waterfron...
