I couldn't ask for more! Geejam is one of the most incredible vacation experiences I've had. The reason I say "vacation experience" is because there are so many layers to Geejam that make it so special.

The Location: Port Antonio (also known as Portland) is such a special 'untouched' spot in Jamaica. It’s more authentically Jamaican in the sense that there are (thankfully) very little "resorts" and more locally ran/owned B&B's, vacation properties, villas, and small hotels. There are so many activities to do in Port Antonio: go to the market (10-15 minute drive to town), stop by a local fruit and vegetable stand (all produce locally grown in nearby farms), several public beaches, Boston Jerk Centre (10 minutes by car – this is where Jerk was created in Jamaica – several different Jerk Stands with Jerk Pork, Chicken or Lobster!), The Blue Lagon (approx. 200 feet deep, a special place to go for a swim), this is just to name a few of the features of Port Antonio….
Access to Geejam – Kingston Airport is the closest international airport. From there you have three options: (1) Drive – its approx. 2-2.5 hours by car (depending on traffic). I would recommend booking through Geejam, they will have one of their employees pick you up and route options include costal (east coast), or through Blue Mountain (which is what we did; it was a beautiful scenic drive). (2) Plane – Geejam reservations can help organize a connection from Kingston to a local Portland Airport at an additional cost which drastically shortens the commute to Geejam. (3) Helicopter – again organized by Geejam at additional cost.

The Property: Geejam is nestled in the hills with breath-taking views of the bays/waterfront of the Portland area. The property itself is immersed in nature; surrounded by lush jungle/natural environment. The accommodations on the property is very limited – there are four cabins and one villa – all private and beautifully nestled in the brush with stone laid walking paths throughout the property. Each cabin (we stayed in both Rocksteady and Mento during our visit) are bright, clean, modern cabins with beautiful wood floors, white walls, white bedding and white furniture, and all equipped with modern bathrooms. Included in each room: a cell phone to communicate to hotel staff during your stay, a stereo-iPhone/pod dock, and access to Apple TV/Flatscreen for entertainment. Each cabin has a beautiful little terrace with an outdoor love seat and bistro table, chairs and umbrella. There is also a gym, outdoor open air bar/restaurant, and pool table on the property. As a Geejam guest you also have access to Trident – their sister property located about 5 minutes east of Geejam on the main road. Trident has beautiful modern facilities that Geejam guests can enjoy (infinity pool, gym, restaurants, bar and sand beach).

The Geejam Beach: A Private beach located 180 steps down from Geejam cabins. The Geejam beach is located right off the main road comprised of a small elevated man-made sand beach with beach beds and chairs, three of four private desks surrounding the coastline with beach beds and chairs, and direct water access to a private swimming area in a beautiful bay. All necessary equipment required for spending the day at the beach is available to you - snorkel equipment, canoes, SUP boards, towels and LOTS of sun! There is also out-houses and showers on location. A Geejam 'beach-boy' is always there for anything you need (towels, questions, conversation, restaurant orders) and he is always time maintaining the beautiful grounds.

The People: Geejam (and Jamaica) has some of the kindliest and happiest people I have ever met in my travels. The employees of Geejam make you feel at home and part of their family. The Geejam (and Trident) team were always checking in on us to make sure we were enjoying each day and if we needed help in booking activities, or just to chat with us and sharing some great conversation. A special thank you to Lij, Janelle, Rajeka, Newton, Robert, Bozer, Booby, Adrian & Nick – You all went out of your way to make our stay at Geejam exceptional. In addition to the Geejam and Trident teams, it was also a very nice experience to meet one of the co-owners of the property, Steve Beaver, who was super friendly and eager to learn more about us and where we are from and how we were enjoying our stay. Steve was a great host and it was a real pleasure to see how much he loves the Trident and Geejam properties and employees; he is very passionate for what he does and you can see that translate into the every-day feel that you experience here at Geejam.

The Food: Jamaican Food is wonderful – fresh, wholesome, and delicious. The restaurants at both Geejam and Trident are fantastic and high-end. Geejam’s restaurant is a little more laid back – outdoor/open air restaurant/bar with fusion Jamaican offerings. Trident’s restaurant/supper club is a white tabled-cloth fine dining experience with beautifully designed and platted food. Geejam Breakfast was the best way to start the day. Included in our nightly rate, we were treated to fresh Blue Mountain Coffee, freshly pressed juice, and a variety of breakfast options: a daily Jamaican Breakfast, Fresh Fruit, Eggs your way, fresh Pastries and Breads, or (my favourite) Banana Pancakes! (Delicious!) Outside of the Geejam properties I recommend that guests try some local places. For a casual lunch I recommend taking a visit to Boston Jerk to have some authentic Jerk Pork, Chicken or Lobster (this is where Jerk was invented in Jamaica – you’ve gotta go). If you feel like going into town – Piggy’s is great for Jerk Chicken. For something a little more formal you must try “Dickie’s Best Kept Secret” Restaurant. Located on the coast at the outskirts (east side) of Port Antonio (about a 15-20 minute car ride from Geejam) Dickie’s is a very unique dining experience. Located in an extended ‘hodgepodge’ dining room of Dickie’s house – you are served a five-course menu cooked by Rastafari-chef himself Dickie. Everything is fresh and delicious and made that day especially for you. (Reservations are required, 5-course meal at approx. $35USD)

The Music: If you are lucky enough, you will be treated to a live performance during your stay by local artists/bands. Geejam hosts the “Jolly Boys” (a Mento band) and if they are in-town and not somewhere around the world on tour, you’ll be lucky to catch a Friday night live performance at Geejam restaurant/bar. Trident hosts “Mikes All Star Jazz Band” on Saturday night in the Trident Hotel’s formal Restaurant. Give Lij or Janelle at guest-services a call to reserve your table while staying at the property! Music is treasured at the Geejam properties (hence the state-of-the-art Studio on the Geejam property). It was a real treat to experience these live performances while on vacation at Geejam.

Final word: don’t look any further… you’ve found your next vacation. Tell only your best friends – this is a very special place!

Room Tip: Rockstead is perfect - small but has everything you need - the Steam Shower is great especially since you are spending so much time in the sun!

What can I say...probably the best experience of our life being at the GeeJam Hotel!! The hotel itself was just spectacular with the most astonishing views from our beautiful Drum & Bass room...The room has a jacuzzi outside to enjoy a glass of wine and an amazing steam room in the shower for a little detox. GeeJam also has its own private beach which is amazing.

On top of owning GeeJam, the owners also manage two other beautiful hotels...The Trident Hotel and The Trident Castle which is just further down the road and the staff was more then willing to drive us back and forth between all locations. Furthermore you receive a cellphone upon arrival so that you can always be in contact with the staff. Great little touch:-)

The Trident Hotel also have a beautiful little spa where you can just unwind and enjoy the best services...I have to say...it was the best massage ever!!!! The food was just unbelievable...definitely try the Jerk Chicken and Oxtail Stew...was my absolute favorite!!!! The Trident hotel also have the most amazing little private beach and private pool, where you can tan and relax.

There was never a dull moment...the owners arranges live Jazz every Saturday, Reggae music every Friday and there is a brunch at the Trident Castle every Sunday. We really loved the bar...there were so many different drinks to choose from and trust me...they were all pretty good and the staff were always very happy for us to try all their signature drinks from Jamaica!!

Furthermore we also went to the Frenchman's Cove which was amazing and The Blue Lagoon...spectacular views and you can also do a boat ride to Monkey Island.

I would suggest GeeJam to everyone and in fact we already booked our tickets for another stay:-)

Room Tip: Drum & Bass room is amazing. It has a large outdoor private deck with private Jacuzzi. The room also has king size bed and bath room with soaking tub and shower/steam room and full access to the GeeJam private beach

As the entrance gates opened and our driver drove us up the private road to the Geejam entrance, we knew we were in for something special. The walk to our villa and the breathtaking view when we entered it clinched those first impressions – and the feeling kept getting better throughout our stay at this stunning resort.

Our villa, nestled as it was in lush jungle-like vegetation, was modern and clean and amazingly felt very private. One morning we enjoyed breakfast, just the two of us, on our deck overlooking the sea. Other times we socialized at the Bushbar, where the food was consistently great and the staff very friendly. A personal greeting from co-owner Steve Beaver on our first night was a nice touch.

Perhaps the most unique thing about Geejam is the music-oriented vibe. We are big music buffs and we thoroughly enjoyed a tour of the studio, the music at the Bushbar, and awareness of the artists who have visited and recorded here over the years.

Thanks to the helpful Geejam drivers, we visited numerous local sites, including Frenchman’s Cove, Winnifred Beach, Blue Lagoon and several restaurants and points of interest in and around Port Antonio. (Some of these trips were provided at no cost and others cost extra.) A raft trip up the Rio Grande was particularly memorable. Port Antonio itself is a wonderful and scenic town. We really appreciated the ‘non-touristy’ Jamaican vibe, although this may not be what everyone is looking for.

We also visited two of the other properties in the Geejam collection. Had a cocktail and game of pool at the magnificent Trident Hotel and a brief tour of the Trident Castle. Both of these were impressive, although quite different from Geejam itself.

Our stay at Geejam was definitely one of our most memorable vacations. We loved everything about it from the location and accommodations to the food and staff. For us, the whole Port Antonio area is refreshingly unlike the all-inclusive resort mindset of the ‘other side’ of Jamaica. Although we normally avoid going back to the same place, we are definitely considering a repeat visit to Geejam.

Room Tip: We stayed in Rock Steady for 4 nights. If we were to return I think I would like to try Ska as the sunsets must be magnificent! Each villa would provide a different experience.

We stayed at Mento, which is hidden in the trees with a private deck and jacuzzi. The setting is gorgeous, though a little shady for a sun lover. The hotel is small, which is part of its charm. There is a steep walk down to the private beach which offers kayaks and paddle boards. The only pool is part of the villa. Other guests can use it, but only if the villa is not hired out. However, it is only a short walk to Frenchman's Cove and there are a number of beautiful beaches nearby. The hotel encourages you to go out and explore the area and provides drivers to enable that. On our arrival they arranged a driver to show us the other nearby properties linked to GeeJam (the Trident and the Castle). Guests of GeeJam can use the faciliites of the other hotels and we had a great dinner at the Trident one night.

The service is lovely and attentive. When we arrived our driver mentioned that my partner wanted to try goat curry. They made sure it was available the next night, even though it wasn't on the menu. They also happily arranged for my partner to have a tour of the recording studio that is part of the hotel.

There is live music on Friday nights, which is great. And the owner made the point to say hello, and to make us feel really welcome, as did all the staff. All in all, GeeJam makes a great base to explore the beautiful Port Antonio area.

We stayed at Mento and loved it's location. Secluded with a private deck and jacuzzi. We dined on our deck one night and at the resto, both of which were pleasant. The service for room dining is very slow and the menu offers no options for vegetarians sadly.

Hi PreeChee,

I'm very happy to note your feelings about Mento – just one of our 3 cabins that’s tucked away on the property.

The night you had in-room dining, we had a larger than usual crowd at the Bushbar, and, you’re correct, it did take longer than normal, to serve you. For this, I offer you my sincerest apologies.

I’m not sure which menu you saw, but for those with a preference for vegetarian food, we do have a number of dishes, including a vegetarian curry, rasta pasta – a sesame stir fry, mento stew – mixed vegetables with dumplings (my personal favourite!), lentil stew, tofu, and as I’ve said in previous responses, we’re more than happy to offer bespoke dishes for anyone who asks.

It was a pleasure hosting you, and we do hope to see you both again.
1love
Steve
