“Magical Treehouses in the Canopy - just spectacular”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2010

Hidden high in the trees - overlooking The Blue Lagoon is Kanopi House. it is a series of five houses and a large meeting room, all of which have spectacular views into the trees and out to the ocean. Best of all Kanopi is close to so great sightseeing trip that we were are to spend most days enjoying the morning with magazines and a truly authentic Jamaican breakfast before heading out to see the Blue Hole (the hotel overlooks it),Reach Falls, Port Antonio, GeeJam (really fun for a few drinks - but trying way to hard), Frenchmans Cove and down the Rio Grande on Rafts (with Michael Fox - an amazing guy who made our trip so much fun).

We have traveled the world over and stayed at some of the finest hotels, my husband and myself wanted to have a laid back but unique weekend break. We were recommended to Kanopi House and having visited the web site we decided this was it. The pictures are a true representation, no exaggeration, the cozy tree houses high under the tree canopy with breath taking views of the Blue Lagoon below peeping between the trees made a magnificent setting. Carla, the hostess...chief, cook and bottle washer, was the absolute charm and personality of the place and her effervescent presence just completes the experience. She was always there to help, plan outings, make suggestions and even accompany the us on outings and at nights regaled us with her many interesting life stories. If you are looking for pomp and fine service this is not the place for you but if you want to relax, be unhurried and casual, this place tops the list. Kayaking in the Blue Lagoon, rafting down the Rio Grande, feasting on Boson Jerk chicken are all absolute musts. We have had the most unforgettable, romantic, week end in Port Antonio.

Your hostess Carla is magnificent. Will be back some day. For those thinking about going don't miss out on this place. It,s very special.

For starters, even though we ranked Kanopi House at 3 stars, this place has the potential to be close to a 5 star. If you are looking for a secluded vacation you can experience with your significant other I would recommend this place, but there are a few things you need to be aware of before plopping down a $1000.00 US dollars per night.

Once you arrive at the Kingston airport make sure to ask for a nice vehicle. I say this because you have a 3 hour drive ahead of you on the worst roads you could imagine, and we were stuck with a car from 1990 that had a blown out back window (not quite the $1000.00 a night service we expected). Once we arrived at Kanopi House it was a breath of fresh air, and yes the grounds and common area are absolutely one of a kind. Karla is the main lady that takes care of your every need, and she is incredibly nice (no complaints here). When talking about the food there are really no complaints, but get ready to experience a traditional Jamaican breakfast. Lets just say by the end of the week we were all eating American breakfasts (Chefs were for sure on Jamaican time, but the food is usually great). One main word of advise is to ask how many other families will be staying there along with yourselves. I say this due to the fact if you want to leave Kanopi House you better be willing to fight for a Kayak or dish out more money to go anywhere. Kanopi House does NOT have a beach, and the only way to get to one is by Kayak. This was a problem for us due to the fact there were 14 people staying here and only enough room for 5 people to use Kayaks (we were told it was not a big deal, well it kinda was). The only other way to leave the premises is by calling a taxi, or swimming (good luck). Yes, there were the occasional not enough towels, and bottled water, but I do believe they will have this ironed out for future guests. During our stay we met some amazing families and had a great time, but these thing we thought everyone should know before they spend this amount of money. Again Kanopi House has amazing potential, and yes we feel as if we over paid, but hopefully in the future they will make this place magical.

I must say that if you can get them to take you to the private waterfalls it is absolutely INCREDIBLE!!! This is one great thing about it being such a small resort is the fact you get one on one service and get to know everyone (kind of a double edged sword). Oh and do not miss out on Monkey Island, and for the ultimate adventure have Karla's two boys take you around on the Kayak. Hope our review is informative.

Matt and Amanda

We had a nice time at Kanopi House but it was not what we expected at all. Firstly, the rooms are gorgeous, we loved our 'treehouse'. Most of my rating is for the design of the actual rooms and their location and views. They were spectacular. Waking up in the jungle was amazing. unfortunately everything else was sub-par. Note that this place is set up more like a bed-and-breakfast. You will have shared meals with the other guests, and the timing of the meals is at the mercy of the Jamaicans and dependent on their moods. We had nights where dinner was not served until 10pm and we were starving. There was a couple of days where there was no water left and we had to boil our own in our room. There are only a few kayaks and if you dont have a car then you are stuck on the remote property/in your room. I would recommend that you bring watershoes as there is a good chance of stepping on sea urchins. I would also recommend hiring a car and then you would have the option of eating your meals in any of the nearby restaurants or nearby beach shacks/jerk chicken joints. We didnt feel that the price we paid was returned in service and the cost of the inclusive meals was definitely not value for money. There was a day when we turned up for lunch at 1pm and were told the next meal was 'Dinner' and after asking again only then were we reluctantly served lunch.
I had some suspicions about this place before we booked it as we couldnt find much information on Kanopi online even though it had been opened for 2 years and it turns out that from the beginning of 2010 was the first time it has been open to 'real' guests and not just to friends-of-the-owners. Perhaps they will work out the kinks this year I hope as it really is a beautiful and unique place to stay with alot of potential. Overall though, we had a nice time and would consider coming back for the beauty of the location and the 'treehouses'. One other important thing to note is that Kanopi is a harrowing almost-3-hour drive from the nearest airport on the worst roads imaginable.

Just back from the most amazing trip staying in the tree-houses in Kanopi house,Jamaica,
waking up in the high 4 poster bed in almond house, with the front wall doors open wide to reveal the jungle treetops, blue lagoon glittering below. My stresses not only melted away,i forgot i had any! my friends and i were catered to in our every need by the warm friendly staff, swimming the lagoon, snorkelling the reef, bbq's,canoeing out on the lagoon at night to see the magical phosphorescence in the water.trips to hidden waterfalls, breathtaking Frenchman's cove beach.
this is the place to relax,in the lounge you feel completely at home, reclining on the luxurious day beds, taking in the stunning view of the caribbean ocean, helping yourself to a fully stocked fridge, homecooked food appearing before you even realised how hungry you were! Kanopi the ecologically sound resort, the luxurious treehouses all blend into the jungle,
the weather was glorious all week, but never too hot at kanopi due to the dappled shade from the jungle trees...i cant wait to go back!

After a 3 day stay at Kanopi House I was sad to have to leave! The grounds are lush and beautiful. The treehouses are stunning and rustic all in one. But the best part of the stay was the staff. Carla and Michael made my stay wonderful and lots of fun.

The place is nice for a solo traveller like me because you get the chance to meet some wonderful guests. However, if you are planning a honeymoon or romantic retreat this place will be your slice of heaven on earth. Beautiful, peaceful and remote...perfect place to relax and rejuvenate in Jamaica.
