“Loved our stay….”
Reviewed 19 April 2012

Special, magical, spiritual these are the words that first come to mind when I describe our stay at Wilks Bay. We were greeted at the airport in Kingston by Warren, who was our driver for the 3 hour journey to Wilks Bay. He made a stop for drinks and patties and pointed out things of interest on our way. When we arrived at Wilks Bay we were greeted by Mary & Jim our lovely hosts, and also enjoyed the company of their daughter Nadia whom soon became fast friends. Jim and Mary were always ready and available to help make our stay special.
We arrived to a lovely vegan dinner (I am a vegan) but other wonderful non- vegan dishes were prepared for my husband. Many thanks to our two wonderful cooks/housekeepers, Sherice and Angela. They were constantly available to indulge our every whim, from cooking, food shopping, laundry and even a cold drink.
Jim invited us to join him in Qi Gong and meditation every morning. My absolute favorite spot for meditation ever! What a delightful way to start each day out on the jetty (pier) with sounds of the sea and the cooling breeze. During our stay Jim took us on several tours of the area, suggesting places to visit and restaurants to try. Jim and Mary also invited us out to join them at their favorite restaurant and to hear music at two different resorts.
I was concerned that we may get bored during our long 5 week stay, but I was wrong. We mostly opted to stay on the property where we loved relaxing and reading on this very private, small, low key, beautiful resort, with our own private beach/bay .We loved staying in the small, but adequate cottage just steps from the beach. Also, there are two lovely swimming beaches within walking distance. We also enjoyed long walks up in the hills with access just across the street. We enjoyed snorkeling and kayaking too. We were surprised by a private candlelit dinner on the jetty during a full moon. And on Valentine’s Day, dinner on the beach complete with torches and music. We even spent a few days at their other house on San San Bay, another beautiful spot where you can kayak to Monkey Island and Blue Lagoon. But hurray, this other property is for sale.
If you stay at Wilks Bay you won’t be disappointed!
Thanks again for one of our favorite getaways, we will return.

Room Tip: The little cottage has privacy and fantastic views!

My husband and I recently enjoyed a relaxing week at Wilks Bay. The service is excellent (housekeeper/cook accompanies each villa) and we quickly got used to being pampered. James obviously loves Port Antonio and is a great ambassador for Portand Parish which is not a regular tourist destination but a spot where Jamaicans come to relax. We felt a very authentic Jamaican vibe (thanks to a dose of mento music), not the hyped, tourist pace of Negril (where rap has unfortunately replaced reggae). The setting is gorgeous and secluded. There is little beach per se and swimming/snorkling is undertaken with care. Some villas are still being worked on, but mostly exterior finishing touches and nothing that would disturb or intrude upon the elegant serenity of the resort that Mary has worked hard to create. Perhaps not the best choice for families (because you have to travel to sandy beaches and activities), but a wonderful option for all other travelers.

Wilks Bay was our choice to celebrate our 30th anniversary and a great choice it was! We had time to relax at this beautiful Jamaican hideaway by the sea and take in the unique sites of Port Antonio. Mary, Jim and their talented daughter Nadia were welcoming and very helpful. We packed in many memories - Jim's 50 cent tour of the bustling friendly market town, the classy reggae act of the "Jolly Boy's" at Gejam, Rufus's forest tour, kayaking, snorkeling and music night. The staff were wonderful and Brenda, our housekeeper, prepared the most delicious Jamaican dishes. Landing in Kingston airport meant that we had the opportunity to travel through the lush tropical blue mountains with an excellent driver.

Room Tip: The cottage unit by the sea was private, with excellent facilities and decor. Loved it!

What a wonderful way to finish our honeymoon in Jamaica. We spent five nights at the lovely Wilks Bay. Our hosts, Jim and Mary (and their daughter, Nadia) couldn’t have been more welcoming. Always open to our needs and in making great suggestions of things to do and places to see. Their staff were warm, friendly and their service was impeccable without being intrusive. We must add a special ‘thank you’ to Brenda for taking care of us.

We were lucky that no one else was staying there at the time and so got the full benefit of this beautiful place. The accommodation is lovingly cared for and modern. And the 4 new apartments also look fabulous. The private jetty and small private beach area just added to the serenity of the place. On the whole, this was just what we wanted - peace and tranquility with delicious food.

We found the parish of Portland to be extremely friendly and million miles away from the resort ideology of Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios. San San Beach, Frenchman’s Cove, Blue Lagoon, Boston Bay, Winnifred Beach, Reach Falls and the parish capital, Port Antonio, were all a stone’s throw, or a small route taxi journey away.

When we next visit Jamaica we will be sure to re-visit the area and in particular Wilks Bay. We’d be fools not to. Thanks guys for making our time at your place so memorable.

We have travelled to many Caribbean islands, but none can top our experience at Wilks Bay!

Where else can you go where you can do Qi Gong (an ancient Chinese healing art) out on the jetty overlooking the sea with Jim (the owner) in early morning? Or, have your personal housekeeper cook fabulous caribbean meals which can be eaten outside your cottage overlooking the sea, or on the beach complete with linen cloth, and tikki torches?

Where else will the owners (Jim and Mary) take you to other nearby resorts for cocktails and
music or to their favorite restaurant, Soldiers Camp, for the special Friday night feast? How
about a personal tour of nearby Port Antonio, (where Jim actually grew up), complete with a stop at the best local patty take out.

In short, by the time our two week vacation ended we felt like we were a part of the Wilks Bay "family"! We certainly want to thank Jim, Mary (the owners), Tatlyn and Cherise (our housekeepers and cooks) and Franklin and Karon (groundskeepers) for making our time at Wilks Bay so memorable! Hopefully, we will return!

Room Tip: The cottage for 2 by the pool was perfect. They are also building 3 more units, all with sea views.

I just returned from a trip to Wilks Bay, staying in the 3-room villa with friends. The location is beyond imagination: almond trees shade the garden, the pool is yards from the bedrooms, fruit trees provided avocados, sweetsops, coconuts and bananas and hosted a variety of hummingbirds, while the sea conceals a coral reef just off the jetty at the bottom of the garden (borrow a snorkel to investigate further)! Mary and Jim were great hosts recommending day trips and guides (Reach Falls is a must) and explaining local food and culture.

The staff at Wilks Bay are helpful and friendly, keeping the garden and beach clean and beautiful, cooking and serving great food and making the holiday devoid of any stress. The cooking is brilliant, Caribbean or other dishes can be requested - fish, lobster, ackee, callaloo and pineapple pie must be tried!

It's incredible that all this is only 15 minutes from Port Antonio with bars, markets and restaurants, and only a short, beautiful drive from Kingston, which is worth seeing on the way to the airport.

The stay at Wilks Bay exceeded all expectations and noone looking for a quiet getaway could go wrong there.

We had been looking forward to our break away at Wilks Bay since April 2011, (when we had paid in full for the villa) as it is a beautiful spot with its own private beach, swimming pool, fully staffed etc. James and Mary had allowed us to see the villa and facilities beforehand and assured us that the construction on site would be completed before our book in date in October (15 to 23rd). Unfortunately this was not to be. James and Mary did inform us at the beginning of October and apologised that the construction was not yet complete but promised that the contractors were quiet and unobstrusive and may sometimes have to use machinery. We had construction workers on site daily (on weekends and on a public holiday as well). They are constructing a two storey building with 2 X 2 bedroomed units on each level. The contractors were very visible and very audible (hammers, angle grinders, drills etc) all day except during their lunch hour. The owners were staying on the property in the one bedroomed villa at the poolside as well. As friendly and helpful as James and Mary are, we had really anticipated some time out to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the villa and the area and had not realised that there would be anyone else sharing the property, never mind the extent of the construction work.

We were well taken care of by Brenda and Franklin, and also Keron who keeps the grounds in good order.

In conclusion, if its privacy, peace and quite you are looking for, then you may need to reconsider your options.
