“Different and amazing!”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Great Huts is simply amazing! If you're looking for somewhere completely different, if you want to be at one with nature, if you want to be in an eco-friendly environment.....then this is the place for you. It's exotic and romantic and the entire place is adorned with unusual and fantastic art pieces in every nook and cranny. It's right on the cliff-side of the most beautiful sea with lots of great views. If you're looking for five star luxury, this may not be the place for you. But if you're trying to reconnect to yourself and what's real in life, come here, you wont be disappointed! I love it..

I heard about Great Huts two years ago and was determined to make that my destination on this trip to Jamaica. I was not disappointed! We stayed in the Queen of Sheba hut -three wonderful levels to get intimate with nature, showering under, sleeping above, and hanging out over the tree branches! There were cozy nooks with hammocks and seats all over the property. The view of the beaches was amazing! The staff was courteous, friendly and helpful even going above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. The food was great- the local and African art enhanced the rustic, earthy, irie feel. Great huts was able to please our 15 year old son- not an easy feat! One night was just a sampling and not nearly enough time! We plan to sample as many of those dwellings as is possible and enjoy the freedom, peacefulness and raw beauty of this spot every time we return home.

It was my 2nd trip to Great Huts. I love the relaxing atmosphere, the whole concept and the way each hut is unique and designed to fit the landscape. On my last trip we stayed at Tabernacle hut and this time I spent some time searching on the internet for the best hut. In the end we chose Sea Grape because of the lovely views of the sea.

Unfortunately there was a problem with the booking system and when we arrived at Great Huts we were disappointed to find that Sea Grape had been taken. We were given the choice of 4 other huts and we chose Almond Treehouse. It is on two levels and is nice and breezy.

After our two day stay we spoke to Dr Paul Rhodes, the owner, as he heard about the problem with our booking. He waived the cost of the hut and the meal and drinks we had.

I would normally give Great Huts a higher rating but because we couldn't stay in the Sea Grape I think our review should reflect this. Dr Paul says the problem with the booking system has been resolved and no-one should have a problem in the future.

Despite our initial problem we had a great couple of days and would recommend Great Huts to anyone.

March 2013. Extremely Exotic! Was not disappointed upon arrival with our expectations. The pictures and brochures cannot give this place justice. The people were warm and the service was very helpful. The food was great and the entertainment with the local children was amazing. Our stay was for seven days in two different huts. We never ran out of things to do and see within the facility with a private beach or outside with the local sites and public beaches and rivers. We have found this experience unique and one not many can say they have done. We will return.

I come to Jamaica each summer with my middle school dance students from Brooklyn NY for a two week dance intensive in Kingston, but every year we spend 3 nights at Great Huts. Not only is it unlike anywhere I've ever been before, but it brings me peace in a way no other place has. Luxury in its most natural form, exceptional staff, adventure and discovery around every corner. My new favorite addition- the cliffside infinity pool. You can almost reach the stars at night. I've stayed in the Sea Grape, Bamboo Treehouse, Almond Treehouse and Figtree House. My students have also enjoyed the new Queen of Sheba and Lemba Hut. Each room is unique and amazing. Stay for the Saturday night dinner and dance performance by a wonderful local youth dance troupe. I'd never stay anywhere else. Thanks Dr. Paul!

We started in Kingston and drove along the winding sea road bound for the waves at Boston Bay. With no solid travel itinerary or reservations. We had searched the Great Huts website, but nothing could have prepared us for what we saw. We arrived right before dusk, just in time to take everything in. On the drive in you pass by an assortment of shops with eager vendors selling fresh fish, lobster and jerk chicken. Soon you arrive at a private gate and enter into a African/Jamaican oasis where relaxation immediately kicks in. The staff was incredibly friendly and resourceful. The resort manager, Mr. Gordon gave us a tour of the grounds and showed us some rooms. He saved the best for last. We chose the Fig Tree hut. It blew us away! It is a suite that sits on the cliff facing the Bay. The view from upstairs was priceless and it was incredibly spacious. The downstairs had the most amazing bath/shower I've ever seen that had curtains that opened to the sea. The grounds are lush with lots of shade, tropical birds and tons of surprises around every curve in the path. We stumbled upon a boardwalk in the evening that lead us to the best stargazing spot. In the morning the light provided even more hidden treasures. Their water access was stellar! There were natural pools to relax in, access to the beach at Boston Bay and a stairway to the edge of a cliff for those interested in an adrenaline rush plunge. The whole place felt very safe and private and again the staff was very helpful and warm while letting you do your own thing. Feel like your living the life of luxury without paying an arm and a leg in a unique Cliffside oasis. You won't be disappointed!

It was one of our best experience staying in this amazing place at all. Friendly staff, amazing views from the cliffs and beautiful beaches by the side! Everything was just perfect and we can wait to be there again and live the next experience at the tower room =D

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Great Huts: Paradise on the Edge is an oceanfront resort on the lush northeastern tip of Jamaica. Modeled after a traditional West African coastal village, at once both rough-hewn and modern, it is a convergence of nature, heritage, spirituality and technology. Off the beaten path, but not far from the bustle and night life of Boston Bay and Port Antonio, Great Huts' jungle-cliff-beach habitat is a distinctive ecological and cultural experience. The Africana House, a Rastafari Mansion by the Sea with high ceilings and Ethiopian-inspired decor throughout, has a spacious communal room, four regal bedrooms, a 5,000-square-foot rooftop deck and a lotus-shaped deep water pool, resting atop five acres braided with intriguing caves and hiking trails. Great Huts is perfect for the adventurer in all of us, an intimate yet communal getaway or a secluded corporate retreat. ... more   less
