“Great Huts is GREAT”
Reviewed 8 September 2009

This place is amazing. The staff is so kind and will help you on any adventure you wish to take. The on-site beach in the bay allows for surfing, cliff jumping, swimming, or just kicking back. We stayed in a hut and also in the Sea Grape room, which was the most beautiful place we stayed in JA, and we stayed at 5 different places.
I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to get away from the typical resort experience, but still be comfortable and safe.

The only reason I'm reluctant to post a review is that it might make it more difficult to get a reservation next time! But to have as many people as possible know of how wonderful Great Huts is is the least that the owner and staff deserve.
Our tree house was an extraordinary (literally, this place is anything but ordinary) space, with views from each window of either lush forest or ocean. The outdoor bathroom took a second to get used to, but became part of the experience as well.
The cliff top restaurant is incredibly romantic, especially on a full moon, and after dark we lay in bed bathed in the gentle blend of the sounds of waves, insects chirping, and reggae wafting up from the main road.
The small beach below Great Huts was perfectly laid-out, with plenty of hammocks and a good entry point into the bay for swimming.
Added to all this, the environmentally sound way that Great Huts has been constructed and maintained, and the efforts of the owner Dr Rhodes to contribute to the greater community of Portland Parish, deserve to be mentioned. A wonderful place all round.

We stayed in the Bamboo Treehouse which was incredible, we felt like Tarzan and Jane. The most beautiful views from every angle. Staff very friendly almost like staying at a friends. Great food at the local jerk centre and beautiful surroundug beaches to explore. Better to stay at small places which inject cash back into local community than large resorts.

We had a great time! The area was not very touristy, which I prefer. You do get the hard sale on the jerk and jewelry. The jerk was awesome though, we tried all of it. Best thing I ate in jamaica.
We stayed in the Sea Grape Hut. There just couldn't be a better view day and night. There is a double lounge chair we spent a lot of time on (bring a towel to sit on) watching the waves crash on the rocks, the sunrise, the stars as far as the eye can see. There are chairs on the beach, rock clif to jump off from, a wading pool with some chairs built into the rocks. Hammocks everywhere. The staff was really nice. Red Stripe in stock for us. No where to keep it cool though. The refrigerator was not very cold either, so put them in the freezer for a while first.
We only had a bottom sheet and blanket on the bed. It was obviously hot for summer with no A/C, so it would have been nice to have a sheet. I suggest bringing one with.
I loved the outdoor bathroom, hot water in the outdoor shower... it was slightly unfortunate when it rained though.... bring the TP back in! Also, there was no mirror in the hut.
The mosquito net was nicer than ones we have had in the past traveling. There was a fan by the bed to help cool it down at night and a window on the other side.
We enjoyed Reach Falls, rafting at the Blue Lagoon, snorkeling (weather was too bad to scuba) and hanging at the Great Huts. The drum and dance show was pretty fun.
We rented a car and drove from Kingston. It was fun but crazy! Take the road along the coast, Mtn road 4 hrs (vs. 2-3) and way more dangerous. It was definitely an extra fun adventure though.
Overall we loved this place. If you like to camp, this place rules! If you need to be pampered, pick a different place.

Thank you for your review, this aid in us receiving guests to our our small establishment. In regards to the bedding issue we normally have a comforter (blanket), top sheet and fitted sheet on the bed. Normally guests would use the top sheet which is placed directly under the blanket but sometimes is mistaken for the bottom sheet as it is usually styled neatly above such. Thank you for making us aware and I will investigate such.

Best Regards.

As soon as I landed in Jamaica I felt completely comfortable and nothing unexcpected ever happened. As soon as I entered the Great Huts compound it felt right, and looked just like the pictures in the website describe it to be. The sounds, smells, food, locals, taxis, ocean water, showers and natural animal life were completely authentic and my only regret in writting such a good review is that more people will visit when I'm there next time, because I am for sure going back. Even so, there were several other guests there at the same time, but we hardly ran into eachother at all. I didn't have a care in the world while trying out all the hammocks on the property or learning how to surf. The conch stew was Great, the staff was freindly but not imposing and one can come and go as they please to experience the real, non-touristy Jamica and all that is has to offer. Just bring some well-souled sandles, turn your cell phone off, and leave your watch in your luggage; don't worry, your email will be waiting for you when you get back to your "home" country.

This was truly a different vacation, a real getaway.

We rented the Bamboo Hut and Almond Treehouse for our family of 4, including 2 grown kids (20s). Our huts were on top of a cliff over beautiful Boston Bay. The huts and reception area are filled with incredible African art. There was easy access to a beach, rock pool and other structures carved out of the cliffs.

We took day trips to Reach Falls, the Blue Lagoon, and Monkey Island, all highly recommended. We ate delicious breakfasts and dinners at the resort, and lunches at “Jerk Central,” a conglomeration of jerk shacks and other local businesses just outside of Great Huts. Before dinner on several nights we shared Jamaican white rum and Coke with the locals at Jerk Central.

Great Huts and environs are rustic. It was one of our most fun and memorable vacations ever. Our 20-year-old son loved the interaction we had with the locals, compared to a vanilla resort where the only exposure to locals is when they wait on you. Doctor Paul, the owner, and staff were always pleasant and engaging, and this is the type of resort where the guests try to get to know one another. Most of we all enjoyed experiencing the real Jamaica.

If you want to stay at a resort such as Sandals then you should probably select a different hotel. My husband and I wanted a relaxing honeymoon away from tourists that would give us an authentic taste of Jamaica. We chose Great Huts as a result, and our stay far surpassed our expectations.
If you are going on a honeymoon I would recommend Sea Grape. Sea Grape has the best views, it is the most secluded and open, and it has a huge outdoor bath (see photo) with spectacular views. There are excursions you can take around the island, but we mostly stayed in our hut just enjoying each other. Staying in the Sea Grape was perfect for us!
Pros:
-Friendly staff- Staff bend over backwards to make your stay perfect. One night we ate our dinner on the cliff instead of the dining hall. Staff set a romantic tone by bringing candles and ensuring we were the only ones eating on the cliff. Our waitress took several trips to bring us water and food throughout the night.
-Eco-friendly- All huts are built around the environment to ensure all creatures are preserved.
-Secluded- For the first few days we felt like we were the only ones staying at Great Huts. I think only 20-25 people can stay there at a time.
-Unique and beautiful-Great Huts is like nothing else. Each hut is unique and special. The natural setting is spectacular as well.
-Clean- The staff are kept busy washing trashcans, fans, and picking up on the walkways.
-Great food- The food costs $15 or over, but the food is worth it. I am not a big meat eater, but I loved the grilled chicken.
-Plus: I am a social worker, so I love the fact that part of the proceeds goes toward running a local homeless shelter.
Cons:
-The drive from Kingston to Great Huts takes about three hours, but our driver was awesome and the view was beautiful. Our driver stopped to buy us coconuts and mangos along the way.
-There are some bugs and creatures, but they really are not that bad. We mainly saw crabs and tiny lizards. But you have to expect to see some bugs when you are staying in an open hut.

Overall, I would highly recommend Great Huts to anyone who wants a romantic, relaxing vacation.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Great Huts: Paradise on the Edge is an oceanfront resort on the lush northeastern tip of Jamaica. Modeled after a traditional West African coastal village, at once both rough-hewn and modern, it is a convergence of nature, heritage, spirituality and technology. Off the beaten path, but not far from the bustle and night life of Boston Bay and Port Antonio, Great Huts' jungle-cliff-beach habitat is a distinctive ecological and cultural experience. The Africana House, a Rastafari Mansion by the Sea with high ceilings and Ethiope-inspired decor throughout, has a spacious communal room, four regal bedrooms, a 5,000-square-foot rooftop deck and a lotus-shaped deepwater pool, resting atop five acres braided with intriguing caves and hiking trails. Great Huts is perfect for the adventurer in all of us, an intimate yet communal getaway or a secluded corporate retreat. ... more   less
