“Best Family Vacation Ever!”
Reviewed 3 November 2011

We just returned a few days ago from FDR and needless to say we wish we were still there. My wife and I are in our 30's and with two kids, a 3 year old and 19 mos old, and all I can say is we all had a blast at the FDR. Although the hotel is "dated", this never bothered us because we knew this coming in. The grounds were always clean and the suite/apt was huge. They actually upgraded us without even asking to a 2 br suite! The nannies, we had Celine and Tamara were excellant with the kids. I should mention that both kids had never really been with anyone besides family and we were concerned at first, but both quickly put any reservations to rest. After traveling to many different resorts throughout the years, I can honestly say that the staff at FDR is the best we've ever encountered. They are what truely make this place so special. We'll most definately be back sometime real soon!

Our first trip was to the FDR Pebbles resort which unfortunately has closed down. So we tried Franklyn D. We were not disappointed. This resort is absolutely the best possible place for families with little kids, If you're looking for beautiful free form pools, gourmet dining, and beautiful modern rooms - this is not the place for you. The food is average to good depending on the day (the Jamaican food is great) and the resort is rather old but well maintained. The beach is small but great for kids. There is a big beach next door for the adults.

The big thing about this resort is the vacation nannies. Our nannies Sophie and Katy Ann were incredible. It's not like the kids clubs at the mega resorts where they have one or two people and like 30 kids - you always feel your kids are safe with the nannies. They also come up with activities throughout the day to keep them busy and having fun. This gives parents a much needed few hours a day to just kick back and relax.

The rest of the staff at the resort are also top notch. The service is really good. Also highly recommend getting a massage!

The rooms aren't fancy, but big clean and perfect for families. We had a 1 bedroom room which has a small kitchenette and a separate sleeping area for the kids.

The other great thing is that since it is a small resort you end up meeting and talking to a lot more of the people.

Definitely check it out if you're looking for a REAL vacation!

Room Tip: The rooms on the lower levels are best if you don't want to deal with the stairs.

The Nannies were fabulous. The food was plentiful, but very repetative. We all got some kind of intestinal distress while there, but with all those kids, it's no a small wonder, The first impression of the place is pretty run down, I was very dissapointed, initially. By the next day - LOVED it!!!!!!! The drinks are delicious, the kids have a great time. I prefered the grounds of the old Pebbles resort, to FDR, but the rooms were VERY spacious!!!!! We did the dolphin adventure excursion, and enjoyed it, greatly. Our Nannies accompanied us shopping, and were kind enough to look over our receipts after, to make sure we were not taken advantage of. The tennis guy was a lovely, upbeat young man that helped us out alot! All in all, we really enjoyed ourselves.

Room Tip: The rooms are much bigger than expected.

We would like to thank you for your kind comments about our staff and amenities and apologize for any inconvenience experienced during your stay with us at the Franklyn D Resort & Spa. There are some old Bungalows that are located on either side of the entrance to the FDR property when you exit the main highway. These run down Bungalows belong to the property next door and are in no way associated with FDR.
We are delighted to know that you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to hosting your family again at FDR in the near future.

Our family has gone to FDR twice. Last year we thought we'd go a bit fancier, sold on pictures of famous TV characters and big slides. Big mistake! Worst and most expensive vacation ever. We have our next trip planned for 2012 and we are counting down the days. FDR really is a unique, one of a kind expereince and the most relaxing trip a parent can ever have.

We have stayed at this hotel a good number of times. It has good and bad things.

First of all, if you expect fancy things, wonderful, new, modern rooms or high cuisine restaurants, you will be disappointed. There are no fancy things there: the pools are nice (but doesn't have waterfalls, or strange shapes), the slides are normal, the restaurants are ok, the beach is a kids beach (close by there is another beach for "adults"), the kids toys are normal, the rooms are big but not too modern, the gym is fine, the kids club is cool, etc.

However, if you do not mind having fancy things and you have small kids, this is a wonderful place. As soon as you get there, there will be a nanny waiting to take care of your son. Your son will stay all day long doing activities that he will enjoy (arts and crafts, sports, pool, slides, playground, feeding fishes and bunnies, goat races, etc.) and he will be happy there (my son, as soon as he gets there, says bye bye to me, and disappears on the different activity places -basket ground, bunnies, kids club, etc...). Then, you can rest: if you want to do "adult" activities, you know your son will be happy and having fun while you go visit the island, if you want to rest, you can rest and watch your sons play, if you want to dive, they have a wonderful dive center (again, do not expect fancy things)... if you want to have lunch and diner with your partner, just tell the nanny to stay and feed your sons... while you have a nice, calm dinner.

An important thing is that the nannies are professional ones. That means, you are not leaving your son with some babysitter (like some hotels offers) but with someone that knows what she is doing. If by chance you and your nanny do not connect, do not worry, you may ask for another one (in fact, normally they are the ones saying that they do not feel good and ask for another nanny to come, since hey do not want by any means a bad review from the client). There will be lots of nannies playing with kids in the resort, that means your son (and her nanny) are always watched by the other nannies, parents, etc... we really feel that our son is in good hands and safe when he is at the resort.

When you talk to other customers there, people would say it is true, the food is not wonderful (but is not bad at all), the rooms are big but maybe not perfect, but our sons are happy here, we can rest, and we are happy here... most of them just say those are the first truly vacations we have had since our son was born!!!.

We have a three years old kid. We have been traveling all around the Caribbean and the babysitter system doesn't work (we tried twice, and we did not like the results) so being on vacations with our son means being with him all day and all night. At FDR we enjoy each other, if I want to take a nap, the nanny will take care of him. If I want to dive, she will be making my son happy.

It is your choice.

Room Tip: When the hotel is really full, they have rooms that you have stairs inside the room (from the door t...

We actually just got back yesterday from our 8 day stay at the FDR resort. I have to say that we had a great time...our nanny was absolutely wonderful with our two year old! Our Stella would fall into bed at night because she did so many activities with her nanny. Every day she came back with a project or something she made with her nanny. The staff always greeted us with hellos and smiles, mostly all calling Stella by name. Stella danced with the waitresses, hugged the bartender and played with the other kids ages 1 to 7. I couldn't have asked for more!

As far as the rooms go...think Island. That's what it is, an Island resort. Our room was clean and comfortable. Our nanny made sure we always had what we needed in our fridge. It was not 5 star but you are also not paying for a 5 star resort. You are paying for great service and special attention from the staff. Love it!! We will return!!

My children and I stayed at the FDR August 30 to September 03. We loved it. I have stayed there in the pass but this trip was different compare to other hotels I have stayed on the island. From the moment I drove up security was very polite (I was shock) compare to pure ruddness from other security at other properties on the island. I thaught maybe it was a mistake then checking it the front desk agent was amaising she was very helpful, polite and attentive (I pinched myself). We were escorted up to our room by the bell men not one but two bell men( nice). Our suite was on the third floor over looking the sea it was tranquil. We were then introduced to our nanny my girls took a likness to her immediately and I was left alone. Ruth Ann was amaising she treated my girls as if they were her little sisters. The girls cried the day we were leaving. They didnt want to leave Ruth Ann. It was a short visit but we will be back
My only draw back is the food we need some jamaican food up in that place with real jamaican spices

Room Tip: A great resort for family and people who just want to get away relax and not be bothered by anyone...
