“Even better then expected”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

As soon as we arrived at The Royal Decameron We was welcomed with very smiley happy people and a welcome drink or two. we was a party of four in sea front cottages - i would deffo recommend paying that little extra to get these cottages..they are right on the beach it was lovely to wake up to on the morning.
The Beaches were kept clean, every morning we would see someone cleaning the beaches
Pool area was very nice - pool cleaned every day
Staff at the hotel Where all lovely nothing was too much trouble for them, what really made our holiday was the Entertainment team during the day, they would encourage you to join in and have you on the stage..if that isnt your cup of tea there is an adults only pool but we found this to be far too quiet.
The food was varied Each day We were always spoilt for choice on what to have.
The entertainment stopped at half ten in the evening but there was a club within the hotel to go to until 2am
I have read other reviews about this hotel with staff being rude ect We as a family never had any of this..we didnt even feel forced to tip to get a better service, some of the staff went out of their way to talk to us everyday asking if every thing was alright and just general chat, a smile and a yeah mon goes along way here...Whilst out there we noticed the french were very rude to some of the staff and to the tourists... we had it happen to us once but that was the only downfall of the holiday, the contract with the french has now ran out i believe (yippee)
Not long after we got back we have booked to come back..We are all well traveled and this hotel has been the best one we have stayed at and are looking forward to coming back

Room Tip: sea view cottages are the best

What a wonderful holiday. Was worried by other trip advisor reviews but our holiday was fantastic. We had garden cottage no 51. It has a sitting room, double bedroom with walk in closet, bathroom with bath and shower and 2 single beds on a mezzanine level over the living room. We had no problems whatsoever. The staff are all lovely, friendly and very helpful. The food was good and plentiful. The only thing I can think of is there are no tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. We had a fridge for my insulin but I don't think others had them. I will go back when finances allow.

This is truly the best holiday I've every been on and I am definately going again next year. The atmosphere at the hotel is what makes it, nothing is too much trouble for the staff whether it's making you their special cocktails or the gardeners getting fresh coconuts every morning for you (best hangover cure ever). You can laze around on the beautifully kept beaches or find somewhere private to hide in the immaculatly kept gardens. Too all thoses saying you need to tip to get decent service Rubbish!! you just have to treat the staff like human beings and be prepared to use your manners as you will actually be astonished how far the words, good morning please and thank you will get you.
We made loads of friends inside and outside the hotel big up to Gary the barman, Tyrese and Jason the security guards and Bobby the gardener.
I would also like to urge you to take the time to take a walk out of the hotel and explore the area, the locals are as friendly and accommodating as the staff and there some areas of real beauty that you will never get to see unless you explore

We read many reviews before going to this resort and was hoping for the best. The people are amazing! Peter Palmer and Adrian Treasure were AWESOME! They went out of their way to make us happy! The unfortunate thing about this resort was the unsatisfactory conditions of the hotel. We thought we had booked a cottage and ended up in the courtyard. It was not good! When we asked to be moved to a cottage, we were told that we could go to their other resort. We read about this in the reviews before we left and knew that wasn't a good idea so stayed and tried to make the best of it. We will not return to this resort and would not recommend it to anyone else. We've been to many all inclusive resorts and there are so many out there that are much better than this. Please know that we have nothing negative to say about the people who worked at the resort aside from a few people at the front desk. The people who worked at this resort were amazing!

Room Tip: Don't get stuck in the courtyard

We went to the Royal Decameron 04/21 through 05/01 and booked through Orbitz. There was 6 of us in our party and we all booked garden cottages. We had read many reviews prior to leaving and became concerned as many people talked about the resort staff putting people in the court yard rooms instead of the cottages that they had booked then telling them that the cottages were all booked. Many people had wrote about the substandard conditions of the court yard rooms and how the hotel staff made high pressure pitches to sway people to transfer to one of their sister resorts which was an even less than desired resort. We called Orbitz prior to leaving for our vacation and was told that everything should be fine and to enjoy our vacation. Our concerns soon became reality when 4 of us in our party ended up in the court yard rooms which were substandard conditions. Let me explain: malfunctioned air condition 3 of the 10 nights to the point where we had to sleep on the porch as it was so hot in the room, took 4 flushes for toilet to flush, and water in room fluctuated hot and cold to a point of near scalding you. We had someone service the air condition 3 times one night and gave up at 3am and just slept outside as we were exhausted and the air still was not working. We have been to many different resorts in the Caribbean and did not have expectations of a 5 star resort like here in the US but this was simply not acceptable. We made several attempts to get a cottage room but was told that our booking agent made a mistake and the only thing they could do for us was move us to their sister resort. We had read enough reviews to know that this likely was not a good idea so did not do this.
There were many positive things about this resort which actually made our vacation. The food was wonderful and the dining room staff was fabulous. Adrian Palmer is a top of the line waiter and helped to make this stay so much nicer. Peter Treasure is one of the life guards and he was the kindest and funniest person I have ever met. He was so much fun to be around and made us laugh every day. The dining staff, beach staff, & cleaning staff are the ones that deserve all the credit for helping people to enjoy their stay at this resort. The staff are so friendly and kind with the exception of the management staff. The beaches were beautiful and well kept by the beach staff. The water was calm and warm. The fruit drinks were plentiful and very good.
There are 2 things that we learned from this vacation. #1 don't book the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean resort again and #2 don't use Orbitz as our booking agent again.

Room Tip: insist on a cottage, do not get trapped in a court yard room

Thoroughly enjoyed this place. Loved the rustic cottage style rooms situated in lovely gardens (so much better than concrete blocks n staircases). Unfortunately the bathrooms were a little dated with hot water in the showers quite hit n miss but when we complained it was soon dealt with. Personally, although nice, I don't feel the beach cottages are good value and not necessary.
The beaches (4 bays) are spotless and cleaned n raked every morning although was a little disappointed by the sea as there was a fair bit of seaweed & was poor for snorkelling. Don't forget to have a chat with 'souvenir man' Bruce who paddles into the bay selling his shells, starfish etc, very friendly & knowledgeable & can arrange most things for you if you wish from taxis to Lobsters. Getting sun beds was never a problem at any time of day. Mornings were quite tranquil but after lunch weather seemed to change with the wind getting up followed by the odd storm.
The bars were good serving decent cocktails n drinks although service is in 'Jamaican time'. A tip or two does help and is often deserved especially at the Jetty swing bar.
The food is excellent in the main buffet area & one of the best I have experienced with plenty of choice. Ok some dishes do run out but are usually topped up readily. The 2 A la Carte restaurants make a pleasant change to sit down and be waited on however the food is quite poor especially in the seafood restaurant. The Thai restaurant is the better of the two with 'service with a smile' Gregory but still the food could be improved.
The staff are exceptional at what they do and are always friendly throughout the hotel. The resident band (trio at the main bar) were great and were 'easy listening' at meal times.
The entertainment teams in any hotel are never my cup of tea but I must say that the guys n gals here are energetic, passionate & very good at what they do. Yes it is a little bit 'samey' but they work very hard and are well drilled. They do show off a little (Freestyle?) but I guess you shouldn't knock talent.
Trips are a must not just just to break up the days but to see Jamaica and it's people. We took a local taxi (red plate) which worked out cheaper & done at your pace. Would recommend Dunn's river ($20 at gate) although this was very commercialised and not as good as the blue hole,(Pools, waterfalls, rocks, ropes, crocodile farm etc), great fun & only $10 pp for a guide. Horse-riding through a local village and down to the bay to swim in the sea was also very enjoyable ($25 - $35 pp). Clearly trips worked out much dearer at the hotel with the tour company's.
The French contract is now at an end so there should not be so many of them in the future however apart from their constant smoking they were no bother to me or seemingly others.
In 45 years I have never returned to the same hotel but the RDCC at Runaway bay may be the first.

Room Tip: Basic cottage style rooms in garden are fine but take a cheap kettle with you.

We stayed for 3 weeks in January.
The staff are amazing. They all work very hard. Management even took time out to talk to the guests.
The food is great ( I never once had to resort to the pizza bar. The choice and quality were so good).
Local brand drinks but mostly ok, Red Stripe is a lot better from bottles than on draft.
The huts are good. some are dated but they are upgrading them all.
The gardens are well kept and relaxing just to sit in.
Noise ! We heard dogs barking but we hear that at home too. One morning we woke to the sound of school children singing which was amazing.
TRIPS.
Blue mountain bike ride is a must.
Its very relaxing just cruising down the mountain. You get the chance to buy coffee/pepper. We also called at a school.

9 Mile ( Bob Marleys birth place).
Worth a visit if you like the music, just be careful what you buy !!! We paid extra to visit a "plantation". This was just some plants in someones back garden.

Ocho Rios.
We took a taxi that we arranged from just beyond the gate. Its a good place to shop, haggle hard though. We ate in Mama Marleys, food was great priced well.

As the title says we will be going back to the Royal Decameron. We hope this will be for our wedding.

To sum up.
Its small but a fantastic place don't let the bad reviews put you off. Don't forget to have a walk round Salem. Go into the local shops they are a lot cheaper than the hotel one.
"Up grades" were offered to us, we didn't take it up.
