“Great Place, Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2010

We just got back from a weekend in Old San Juan and wanted to write a review and say how much we enjoyed the place. We stayed in apartment Ballaja. This was a great place and convenient to everything in Old San Juan. The place is very large and nicely decorated. Mr. and Mrs. Garcia and their little daughter were great hosts, very nice and accommodating. They also have a store right around the corner, so if you have questions you can just stop by. We will definitly be back and look forward to trying out one of the other apartments. Thanks again

This place is on one of the most picturesque streets in Old San Juan, and just down the hill from one of the 1st Cathedrals in the Western Hemisphere. We stayed for 2 nights in the La Puerta apartment when we came to San Juan for a cruise. It's on the 1st floor overlooking the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. You literally open the window and you are right there! The place is VERY old (quaintly so), but has been updated very recently. It isn't really a hotel, but more like a few apartments they rent out. The only negative I can say about our entire experience was the sofa was stained and a little smelly, but otherwise, it was a great place! If you are wanting complete privacy, however, I would recommend another room, as the 1st floor is very close to the sidewalk and during the day it's quite warm in San Juan so you'll want the windows open. There is air conditioning for the evening, but we didn't need to run it during the day (we weren't there long during the day anyway.)

The owner, Betsy, was very nice, and works at a Cigar/hat shop just around the corner.

Caleta 64 oozes charm and really helps you get in the right frame of mind for Old San Juan. Our room (Adoquin) was upstairs, with high ceilings and lots of room. The weather was a little cool while we were there, so we opened up the doors to the balcony at night and slept very comfortably, although there was an air conditioner had we wanted to turn it on. Street noise was not an issue. The balcony is a perfect place to enjoy a nightcap before bed. The kitchen seemed well appointed although we didn't really use it. It was very handy to have washer/dryer right there in the room with us.

There's an excellent Spanish tapas restaurant a couple doors up the street which we recommend, but there are excellent restaurants throughout Old San Juan, and Caleta 64 is located centrally to all the sights and shops, but far enough around the corner so that the party doesn't follow you home and keep you awake.

We would definitely like to go back, and have recommended the hotel to our families as well.

Our family of 4 stayed 3 nights to experience Old San Juan. The location was perfect on a quiet street. We stayed in Casablanca, and we loved the funkiness of the design (with the courtyard open to the sky). Proximity to El Convento helped us catch a cab for our morning return flight.
The well equipped kitchen included a washer/dryer, blender, coffee maker, toaster, fridge, oven, dishes and pots. We ate out most of the time, but loved convenience of the kitchen for breakfast. Getting hot water in the shower was sometimes tricky but we learned the secret of barely turning on the water for it to get hot.
See all the photos to experience Betsy and Gustavo's good decorating sense. They were welcoming, and available just around the corner. My son loves his Panama hat from their store El Galpon. This experience was very much like staying at a friend's place.

Stayed in Adoquin for 3 nights at end of feb prior to boarding cruise for caribbean not disappointed. Arrived late 12.30am as flight delayed an hour, Betsy waited up for us gave us a quick tour and left us to get some sleep after travelling for 24hrs! Place has lots of character and space our room was large and had 3 large shutters opening onto balcony, fans and air con super although air con bit noisy a night so tried just fans but was bit hot so relented and put it on in early hours! Area itself felt very safe no qualms on walking around -although were disturbed first morning 6am by noisy bin men (Betsy did warn us) and second morning around 4am by what we later identified (on hearing again) street cleaners jet washing our street and surrounding ones for about 2hrs -we later on in day saw the truck and offending generator droning on further on in OSJ. If you want space, a good bed and fairly quite location close to the shops and restaurants you cant go wrong here!

We just left Caleta 64 and couldn't have had a more positive experience in Old San Juan. The location is as good as it gets and the feeling of being in such a historic place only adds to its charm. Take Betsy's advice on places to eat and drinkj. Thank to her, we got to see the most fantastic flamenco at small club next door. They were so helpful and with owning a shop just steps away, anytime we had questions or needed anything, it was so easy to get help! AWESOME PLACE! By the way- we have stayed at El Convento in the past - which is great -BUT we will choose Caleta 64 from now on!

I loved Caleta 64. We were 2 couples and stayed in Ballaja. It had 1 bedroom with a full bath but where the futon was there was another 1/2 bath. I want to note that the futon is around the corner of the bedroom not right outside the room, so you have quite a bit of privacy if 2 couples are sharing like we did. One night my brother-in-law even slept over on the loveseat that has a footrest/ottoman, so when you put it together it's like a bed. Everything is very nicely kept and updated. (LOVED the sheets!) I really don't like to stay in big hotels when I travel because I feel like I pay for a bunch of things I never really use (gym, spas, etc...) So this time I paid for what I wanted: atmosphere, location and cleanliness. The apartment was on a quaint little street. It was great to be able to walk to clubs, restaurants and stores. At night my husband and I walked along El Morro and the water and it was beautiful. Betsy was amazing, we were supposed to arrive at 12:00am and didn't end up getting there until 1:30am and she still welcomed us with a smile and answered all our questions. She came/called everyday to check on us and change our towels and get anything we needed. I really recommend this place. I am definitely coming back. Oh and although you don't get your own parking spot we found parking right in front of our door 95% of the time!
