“I was amazed”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

I travel a lot for work in the Caribbean and I will very likely never stay at a better hotel...ever. I was at El Convento for work, but it felt like I was there on vacation. My room was immaculate and huge, parking was a breeze, the staff was beyond friendly and organized, and El Convento's location in the heart of Old Town is unparalleled. My room was so large I actually had meetings in it. My experience was so good, I felt obliged to write a review, which I never do, and I wont ever think about staying at another hotel in San Juan. If you get the chance to meet Karina you will be in luck, she coordinated my stay with my colleagues, and was so helpful.

We extended our cruise vacation by staying at El Convento. I cannot imagine returning to San Juan and not staying here again. Everything was first class, a real treat in the center of old San Juan. Perfect for our anniversary stay. Spoil yourself and stay at this charming jem.

This was a magnificent hotel located in the heart of Old San Juan. Everything about it was wonderful, from the food to the cleaning service. We stayed for a week, my husband, 9 month old daughter, and I. The hotel had cribs available. They brought us extra trash bags for diapers. They left chocolates on our pillows at night. It was an overall wonderful experience. The only thing that we were slightly displeased with was the cost of food in the hotel; however, the Pizza and Beer restaurant was affordable and delicious. (Their assortment of beers was second to none). Also, there is a FREE wine and cheese social at 6:00 pm every night. Great way to try a bunch of different wines.

El Convento is a jewel ... Superb location, wonderful people, and excellent food. The entry is your first sign that you are in a special place. Chamil and Andrea at the desk greet you and make sure you have everything you need. George will take your bags and regale you with the history of the hotel.

The architecture of this former convent is lovely, with a beautiful shady courtyard where bartender Jose Salas will recommend the local fritters. Grande will serve you an amazing breakfast with friendly elegance. Wine reception at 6 and coffee bar in the morning are very well done.

Carolina offers trip suggestions and makes sure your stay is what it should be. We came a day in advance of a cruise and will come back with El Convento as our destination. When people so clearly love working at a hotel, you know it is an excellent place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the fifth floor ... The breezes are amazing and the views are marvelous.

Pros:

Luxuriously classy, beautiful, sophisticated with an old world charm. We slept in the same room and walked on the same tiles as the blessed Carmelite nuns were housed centuries ago. Staff was so very warm and helpful. The rooms were charming, spotless, beds (room w. 2 Queen sized beds) were super comfy - extra pillows and blankets were provided. All Aveda toiletries.

Lovely turn down service w. chocolates. We were on first floor and had one and a half bathrooms!! What a perk for a family of four!

Wine & Cheese hour where you can mingle w. other guests.

Location! Location! Location! This hotel is near all the action! Near El Morro, luxury shops, gift shops, CVS, best restaurants, pigeon park, museums and the weekend festivals. It's right in the center of the heart of old San Juan very convenient location!

Cons:

Their restaurant is over priced. Did not eat here once. But why eat there, when El Hibarito is down the block!!! A must visit for authentic PR cuisine!!

Pool is tiny however, you are in PR - get to the beach!

Breakdown:

If you want a "party" type hotel, stay at La Concha which sits right on the beach, has girls walking in their thongs and plays dance music on their loudspeakers. ( El Convento extends passes to their guests to visit La Concha's resort premises and beach {10 min cab ride you pay for $15}). This was just fine for a beach day.

If you want quaint, classy & quiet - in the heart of the action..
El Convento is the hotel for you!!!

Would definitely recommend and go back.

Everything you read here that is positive about this remarkable hotel is true and then some. We stayed four nights exploring all that old Sal Juan has to offer and probably took more pictures of the hotel than all the others combined.

While the rooms are small (it is a former convent 350+ years old, so sisters did not exactly have spacious quarters) they are elegant and modern in every sense of the word. The high vaulted ceilings, period decor and ultra modern bathrooms, combined with the beautiful courtyards with outdoor restaurants and the chapel that is now used for receptions make for a very special stay, well worht the price.

This is not a hotel to just stay in on your way to or from a cruise, it is a destination to be expienced and enjoyed. Ask for room 106 or 107 which have a second enclosed outdoor sitting area that almost makes the room double the size.

Room Tip: 106 or 107 see above. At first we were bummed as these rooms are on the first floor but they are mu...

We love staying at El Convento when we stop over in San Juan en route to other Caribbean destinations. We love the old building and the incredible location. We have always found the rooms well appointed and love the wine and cheese hour. Our favorite routine is stopping for a glass of sipping rum as a night cap on our way up to the rooms. The bartenders are always able to recommend the best rums and the ambiance can't be beat. And I have to say - anyplace that serves the coffee with a carafe of warmed milk is a win in my book.
