“Awesome courtyard bar!”

Stopped in for an amazing hibiscus Daquiri with Vanesa as our bartender. Not only is she an excellent mixologist but she gave us tips on where to go in Old San Juan. The best bartender and friendliest one in Puerto Rico!

Having never been to Puerto Rico, my husband and I wanted to dive right into the history and culture and opted to stay in the heart of Old San Juan at El Convento. We could not have made a better choice! The historic hotel is absolutely gorgeous and loaded with colonial Spanish charm. From beautiful tiled floors to arched breezeways and a lovely inner courtyard, this hotel transports you to another time and place. The staff is incredibly nice and accommodating and the attention to detail is stunning: Fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and bottled water available 24/7; a free wine and cheese happy hour every evening at 6 p.m.; Aveda bath products and nightly turn down service in your room. So relaxing! Some have noted that the bathrooms could use a little updating; While they are clean and nice, it's true that the water pressure is a bit low, the shower water doesn't drain particularly fast, and the toilets run for awhile after flushing. However, I'm sure that this is simply a product of a very old, historic plumbing system. It was a very, very minimal "price to stay" for staying in such a beautiful, historic building! I can't wait to come back!

My husband and I stayed here in June. The hotel definitely has that "old world" feel. We loved our room. It was nicely decorated. I thought it was a bit small, but I realize we are in an old convent. We booked a double deluxe room. The website says the louver doors open up to a veranda, but you can't step outside at all. I would have loved for the hotel to have nicer, fluffy bath towels for it being a Luxury Hotel of the World, but that's just me. The bathroom could have used a bit of updating. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated. Amazing verandah/inner courtyard has lots of charm. We ate at one of the restaurants and the food/drinks were fabulous! We only booked a couple of nights here because we wanted to spend some time in the Old San Juan area. If you are interested in going to the beach, El Convento is partnered with a couple of other hotels that allow you to use their beach area. However, there is NO SHUTTLE, and you have to pay a cab fare to get yourself there (about $20-$25 each way!). We deliberately booked a hotel on the beach for the remainder of our stay in San Juan to enjoy the beach area. The pool is very, very small. All in all, this hotel is really quaint and the staff is extremely friendly!! I would definitely stay here again.

My family has had the good fortune to stay at El Convento for two weddings
within the span of 14 months. We had super service both times we were there.
The staff could not be more friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the
superb service by Tony and Jose Melendez.

Historic building in old San Juan, originally a nunnery, the church is across the cobblestone street. I have stayed here 40 times, over the years, starting in the late '60's. The outside looks much the same; but the inside has been brought into the present. Elevators, pool, bar, restaurant, bus center, comfortable room great bed, modern bathroom, great air conditioning, and lighting you can read by. Cost: $$

Room Tip: Get a king size bed

We very much enjoyed our stay at Hotel El Convento. It's in a great location, walking distance to pretty much everything in Old San Juan. Our room was very clean, the beds were comfortable, and the air conditioning worked great.

The hotel staff was fantastic and made us feel very welcome. They made a point of saying hello whenever we passed in the hallways. They gave us umbrellas when it rained, offered dining suggestions, and arranged a rainforest tour for us through E&B Tours.

We ate dinner at Pizza & Birra one evening and had breakfast at Patio del Nispero twice. Both restaurants were quite good. The waitstaff at Patio del Nispero was fantastic. They were super friendly and they enjoyed talking to the kids as well as the adults. Patio del Nispero offers beautiful views of the inside of the hotel and provides a wonderful atmosphere.

If we ever return to San Juan, we would almost certainly stay at Hotel El Convento again.

While we didn't take advantage, the manager holds a Wine & Cheese reception every evening.

Tip: Hotel El Convento offers free bottles of cold water to all of their guests. Be sure to grab a bottle or two before heading out into the hot sun for the day.

My one minor gripe: We were a family of four, yet housekeeping consistently left us three towels and washcloths unless we wrote them a note asking for four. Easily fixed with a simple phone call.
