The castle is full of history, there was an iguana on-site, the stories are amazing, and be prepared to walk!

While it's the less popular of the two forts, it's well worth checking out the amazing history and architecture of the Castillo de San Cristobal! What a cool tunnel system. The rangers are super friendly. Not to mention the view is spectacular.

Family and I arrived here on a cruise ship and wanted to explore the area without doing an official excursion. This was the first place we came to and were extremely happy we came. It's a bit of a slog climbing up and up, but burning some cruise-ship calories is a good thing anyway - and what a view! Some of the best pictures of our cruise were taken from the top here, both facing out to sea or back towards Old San Juan. Just a great time and practically free (I think $5/pp. Includes the other fort (El Morro) but, though we saw it, we never actually went to the other one).

It's hard to say which is "better", Castillo San Cristobal or Castillo San Felipe del Morro. They are both equally impressive and are both worth visiting.

A few tips:

Admission is fantastically cheap. $5 per adult and kids are free. That $5 admission is good for several days and will also get you into Castillo San Felipe del Morro.

Check out the schedule for guided tours, especially if you plan to visit on a weekend: http://www.nps.gov/saju/planyourvisit/guidedtours.htm

While the gift shop sells water and Gatorade, you'll probably want to grab a bottle or two before leaving your hotel. You'll be in full sun most of the time.

I love history and was able to enjoy the awesome views for a small price of $5.00 you can tour both San Cristobal and El Morro.
