Owner description: More than just an art museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico hosts concerts and festivals as well. The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), a non-for-profit organization, was inaugurated on July 1, 2000, as a legacy for the Puerto Rican people. The mission of the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is to enrich the lives of its diverse audiences by making accessible and promoting the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of visual arts from Puerto Rico and the world. The MAPR engages diverse communities to facilitate learning experiences about the visual arts through: the growth of a well-researched permanent collection exemplifying significant and representative examples of Puerto Rican art from the sixteenth century to the present; a dynamic program of exhibitions supported by engaging and exciting educational and cultural programs that collectively deepen the understanding of the role of the visual arts in the human experience and contribute to the creation of a curatorial legacy; documentation, research, interpretation, preservation, and conservation of the collection and the visual arts patrimony of Puerto Rico; and alliances with local, regional, and international museums and institutions to advance the knowledge of, access to, and understanding of the visual arts of the world.

This is a beautiful museum...the Marco Polo exhibit right now is fantastic. They have an amazing children's art education program located in the floors that were excavated and added below the historic main building. As usual, the museum shop has great items also!

From Old San Juan, take a bus here for 75 cents (exact change.) Or you may pay $20 for a cab. You will not see many tourists and very few cruise ship explorers since the museum is about 20 minutes by bus from the main bus station near the piers. The building is modern and the collection is contemporary in general. When I went, there was an extensive exhibit about Marco Polo. Outstanding. However, do not expect to take photos of the regular collection. Plan a couple of hours to wander. Save some energy to walk to the Contemporary Art Museum about a 15-20 minute walk away.
