“Comfortable, quiet hotel with great pool area”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

I stayed at the Doubletree by Hilton San Juan for three nights in February 2014, and it was perfect for my needs. It is a hotel that caters mostly to business people, which I didn't know going in, but which turned out to be great. This meant that the pool area was basically empty and very quiet during most of the day--I would say about 6-8 people were usually there. The pool is relatively small and I imagine lots of people walk down to the beach, so it's perfect if you're like me and enjoy reading a book by the pool and going for a quick swim to cool off once in awhile.

The pool area also has different places to sit--lounge chairs in the sun, tables with umbrellas and chairs in the shade--also great if you don't want to spend all your time soaking up rays. The best rooms are the ones on the first floor that open out onto the pool area. They have small private decks with overhangs (perfect for days when there are morning showers--you can have your coffee outside and enjoy the warm rain while staying dry). I stayed on the fourth floor overlooking the pool--I had been concerned that there might be noise coming from the pool, which is open 24 hours. There was not! No noise! Wonderful! I would not hesitate to get a ground floor room next time.

The fact that this is primarily a business hotel also means that you will probably not be disturbed by people coming back to their rooms at 3am, drunk and rowdy. If you want quiet and privacy, this is a great place. On the other hand, if you're looking for a place to party and socialize with other guests, this is not the place for you.

My room was small but perfect, with wonderful a/c/fan that was easily regulated. The bathroom was spotless and the shower hot with excellent water pressure. There is more than enough room in the closets and drawers for your stuff, with a desk for your laptop and a small chair and table by the window for lounging. The flatscreen tv gets all the usual American basic cable channels.

The staff is wonderful and helpful--I lost my room key card and was given another one without any charge or hassle or even disapproving look!

If you stay here, I urge you to explore Condado by walking along Ashford Avenue and also Diego Avenue. I went to Hacienda every morning for coffee--their cafe con leche is amazing! There are lots of restaurants in the area, and a 24 hour supermarket is located right across the street. My room had a small fridge, ice bucket, and coffee maker, so it was easy to have snacks available if I wanted them. The restaurant Under the Trees is located right across the courtyard--there's also a Starbucks there--and they have very good if pricey food that you can eat at an outside table if you wish. The hotel's own restaurant looked good, but I didn't eat there because of all the other choices.

Overall, highly recommended! I hope to go back.

The DoubleTree, San Juan was a welcome find as business travel took me to Puerto Rico in the high season. The hotel itself and its grounds were attractive and well kept, and the price was right as compared to the beachfront resorts.

Also to its credit, the staff was friendly and helpful. English is freely spoken in an effort to make the non-Spanish-speaking guests feel comfortable. The Continental Breakfast was better than many I have had at more expensive properties and the additional restaurants on the property offered both a high end, fine dining as well as a whole foods/organic option.

The DoubleTree, San Juan is conveniently located and well priced. There is no doubt that I would return on business.

We stayed 3 nights here, 2-12 through 2-14-14. Front desk staff is friendly, with attitude of customer service. When we checked in the elevator was out for the section of the hotel we wanted to occupy. So they upgraded us, at no extra charge, to a top floor, tower room with one queen bed and a hidden murphy bed. Courtney Torres and Nicolas Burgos were especially helpful getting us settled, giving us directions to attractions, telling how to get on the bus, giving us other helpful tips. The cab ride from the airport is at a set rate; $15 plus $1 per bag. Cabbies don't use the meter when in fixed rate zones. The cab ride into the tourist area of Old San Juan from the Doubletree is about the same price, but one can easily catch the local bus for 75 cents into Old Town. (The bus stop is across the street and about a block up the hill.) We chose not to pay extra for the pricey hotel breakfast brunch, but we did hear other guests saying how good it was. Instead we used the Super Max grocery store across the street from the hotel. It is handy and has a decent deli. Since rooms at the Doubletree have both a refrigerator and microwave (and coffee maker) we saved money using the grocery store. We rented a car from Enterprise in Condado. They picked us up at the hotel at no extra charge and returned us to the Doubletree when we were done with the car. Their shuttle service was available from 8am until 4pm when we were there. The hotel suggested some great places nearby to eat instead of just pushing their own restaurants. Pierre's Cafe in the lobby had happy hour from 4 or 5pm until 7pm with delicious two for one drinks. Their Pina Coladas were outstanding. You can walk to the beach, though it is a little ways away. You can get a letter from the front desk to allow you to use the pool and grounds of any Hilton sister hotel. Some people complain on trip advisor about the trendy, obscurred glass door separating the bathroom from the bedroom. True, privacy isn't as great as it could be and turning on the bathroom light in the middle of the night might wake up anyone else in the room. So, bring a dim night light from home. The electrical is the same as mainland US so your nightlight and other appliances will work just fine. Wifi is free and reliable as are PCs in their business center.
Since we were looking for a clean, safe and comfortable place to sleep and not a destination resort, we found the Doubletree was perfect, especially with the friendly and helpful staff. We would stay there again. Be aware that their is and 18% "resort fee" in addition to the just over 10% tax. This seems to be the case for all the hotels in San Juan.

The Double Tree in San Juan is a great hotel with a great location. Our family had a wonderful time and especially enjoyed the pool. It is located conveniently in a modern part of San Juan but convenient to Old San Juan for sightseeing. You can also use "sister" hotels to visit beaches.

We just returned from a long weekend in San Juan and stayed two nights here. The property is very clean and looks relatively new but what makes this place is the staff. We did not encounter one person who wasn't personable and friendly from front desk, to bartenders, to valet guys. We stayed in a queen sized bed room on the 2nd floor - quiet and clean - only complaint is the bed felt more like a full size bed as opposed to a queen.

The location of the hotel worked fine for us. It is a few blocks from Ocean Park beach and a 10 - 15 minute walk to the heart of Condado. The beach near the hotel can be rough so we walked to the end of Condado and went to the lagoon. $5 chair rental, calm water and really relaxing. The hotel is also a quick ride from the airport ($19) and a quick ride to Old San Juan ($17).

We ate at Under the Trees one night, which is associated with the hotel somehow but is in a different building. Food was really good, we had ceviche and chorizo appetizers and then opted for traditional Puerto Rican food for dinner. Everything was good and the inside of the restaurant is really nice.

The supermarket across the street has anything you can need during your stay.

One other tip would be to go to Pinky's for breakfast, its about a 5 minute walk but is a great place.

We love Puerto Rico and are already thinking about when we can get back and if we decide to stay in the same area again - we would definitely choose this property.

We stayed two nights here on our recent trip to Puerto Rico. I found the rooms clean, the bed comfortable, and staff helpful. We especially enjoyed the 2 for 1 happy hours and the outside sitting area that had wait service. There is a 24 hour grocery store right across the street which was also very handy.

If you are looking for a place to stay that is close to the water, I would not recommend this hotel. You can walk down to the Ocean (and it is a short walk) however we did not feel very safe doing so. We did walk down there and though I can't put my finger on it...we felt unsafe.

If you want to go to Old San Juan prepare to pay $17 for taxi ride one way.

Overall, very nice place to stay.

This hotel is very clean and modern. I chose this hotel due to it's rank on TA and the fact that it is in the hilton family. That being said, the decor of the rooms is more contemporary than what some people may expect. For example, the bathroom door is a frosted sliding glass panel and the shower wall towards the room is made of glass blocks. Bottom line is, if you are sharing this room with people you do not know very well, it might not give you the privacy you want. The bathroom only had a pedestal sink, so no counter space to put your things on. This gets annoying every time you have to go fish your toothbrush out of the suitcase. I feel like the aesthetics won out over the easy-of-use and practicality when they designed the hotel. As for service, we were seated for breakfast and 20 minutes later nobody had come by to take our order so we left. I was quite surprised, had not expected to leave a primarily negative review of the property after seeing what other people wrote about it. The pool area was nice, and they did have free wifi if that counts for anything.
