Actually a very safe location , the streets around maybe kind of rough but that's the way almost the entire island is. Best thing about the hostel is Shannon and Justin , they manage the place really well and they make you feel at home. There is two other girls that work here , but they need to work on their people skills, they will not talk to you at all and seem very distant from everyone...not really what you expect in a hostel staff right ??? but other than that, is very decent for the price you pay. Now, if you looking for room service, full privacy and a bathroom that shines, change the word from hostel to motel , cause that is not the spirit here.
Breakfast is like a "camping" meal: some bread, peanut butter , coffee, oatmeal, bananas, etc.
I love the activities you get to enjoy with the people here due to Shannon initiatives and the other night we went with Justin to an underground rock ckub in San Juan, how cool is that uh !
Like I said the other part of the staff will not care less about who you are or what you do...sucks. If the owner of this place is reading this, please have more people like Shannon and Justin...please! I give you a hint : last night a guy ramdonly try to follow one of the girls inside the hostel (he wasn't a guess here) and inmediately Shannon jump in and fix the situation....some of the guys were there just in case, but she handle it like a pro ! wow , that girls will be in my team everyday !!!! How I know all this ?? Im writing this review while I'm still here....so want to have fun with a budget ???? Come here !!!!

I stayed here for a week in mid-May, I really enjoyed it. The staff was helpful and kind, and provided good recommendations. The rooms were a bit small, but the beds were comfy and the clientele was very observant of house rules. A 15 minute walk to Condado Beach was nice, and you are also just 2 blocks away from the bus line which will take you to Old San Juan. The FREE breakfast was simple but it was an appreciated touch. Bananas, toast, peanut butter and jam, and coffee. For the price you can't go wrong in choosing this hostel.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with a partner try and get a shared double room, it's just $25 each. For s...

Amenities: Appreciated them providing bed linens, towels and breakfast. There was also a lot of free food available. The A/C was also good. Private rooms have mini fridges which is awesome.
Atmosphere: Party Hardy! Seemed like the staff was getting drunk more than the guests. I was told the staff were really just long-term guests? Not sure.
Security: Great. Front door was always locked and each room has its own lock with key.
Location: Neighborhood is gross. There was dog poo and garbage all over the surrounding streets.
Parking: There was readily available, free parking on the street.

I really enjoyed the staff at this hostel. They made me feel very welcome and comfortable. I thought the location wasn't great but it is walking distance to the beach (if you don't mind a 15 minute walk and some traffic) and there's a bus line that takes your right into the Old San Juan tourist trap area.

The room was clean and the company was great. Price is good.

Thanks :)
Claire

Definitely an all-around great place to stay.

Josh, the guy who ran the front desk, was very nice and friendly -- and extremely helpful with giving me directions when I missed my exit and wasn't sure where I ended up. The place was generally full for my 3 nights there, so it was pretty social. Breakfast (fruit, tea, coffee water, oatmeal) is served from 7-10 am.

Location-wise, it's pretty solid. Walking to distance to Old San Juan, which is nice given the general weather. You can get around San Juan pretty easily without a car (buses and trolleys are available), but it's nice to have one if you want to do non-touristy stuff outside the city. There are places to eat and a grocery store and post office within a stone's throw.

Small kitchen, hard for more than one person to cook at a time, but it's a nice social atmosphere, so no one seems to mind. There's a TV upstairs with a library of DVDs and books. Lockers are available.

Bedrooms are small and a bit cramped, not much room to turn around in, but they're just a place to sleep, mind you. And the beds are VERY comfortable. Everyone socializes in the common areas -- which include two very cute patios upstairs (the one in back is really cool), a cool one upon entry and the main one by reception. I asked Josh if the hostel owners were interested in possibly painting the rooms different colors, as it might ease up on the bit of claustrophobia (me just being girly), and he said that it was something the owners were already looking into.

Like the hostel I reviewed in Naguabo, this one is a "work in progress" as defined by those in charge, but still at a great stage when I came. I'd easily stay again.

A review on behalf of the 17 other people:

Coming from our comfy homes, we, as a group of students and three teachers, didn't know what to expect as most of us have never experienced staying at a hostel before. But if our future hostel experiences can be like the Palace Hostel, we will darn well prefer hostels over hotels!

Anyways on with the detailed review!

Location:

Don’t let the building number 666 turn you off. It's all part of the attraction! The hostel is situated in a nice and quiet and working-class neighbourhood so security is definitely not an issue. It is also a short walk away ( 5-10 mins) from several eateries like Subway, Papa Johns and a convenience store for all your basic needs. A bar is nearby as well so don't fret.

Rooms:

Modest but comfortable and there is without a doubt memory foam bed. Very comfortable and the AC is as cold as home’s. One pillow, a bath towel and a thin duvet is all you need to be comfortable, seriously.

Bathrooms + washing machine:

When we arrived, the bathrooms were clean and stuffed with toilet paper so don't worry. Eighteen of us agreed that the bathrooms were up to standards so don't listen to the negative reviews. Blame the roomers with no sense of cleanliness. There are three bathrooms in total: a small one downstairs with shower/toilet and two upstairs, one spacious and complete and the other with just a toilet and sink. All include hot water so don't worry about freezing to death.

Breakfast:

Don’t expect a fancy buffet but the breakfast was better than we expected. There was white and wheat bread, toast paired with a variety of jams, hot teas, coffees, juices, fresh fruits, and even boiled eggs!

Amenities:

There are mini fridges to store your stuff and they came in handy when we wanted to store drinks and stuff. Masking tape was available to mark your stuff.
There's also a washing machine for your convenience and speedy internet...when everyone's out of course. Satisfying speed.

Common room and balcony:

The morning breeze rolling in the upstairs common room is fantastic while enjoying your warm breakfast or just chatting with friends. Or you can sit out in the balcony surrounded by lush green plants and enjoy the view below. There are enough chairs and tables to be comfortable with several electrical outlets. There's also a TV upstairs and you can request to watch a small collection of hit and indie movies.

To sum it up, the experience at the Palace Hostel was amazing and there were no complaints at all (other than bathroom lines but that's typical so make a schedule with your pals). If we had to go back to Puerto Rico again, without a doubt we'll be ringing Jefe or Josh and booking for a week or more! Thanks guys for the wonderful experience!!!
