“An understated gem”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

My partner and I spent 5 days in PR staying at the AGH as a get-a-way from the winter doldrums of the main land. Situated in a PR community that may startle you at first wondering about your choice of lodging due to the graffiti and abandoned properties that abounds. However, this all melts away very quickly as you settle in at the guest house.

Our room (#6) had us scratching our heads a bit as we had at our disposal a dorm sized frig, small microwave, toaster, & coffee maker along with a few dishes and an assortment of eating utensils. But, other than the bathroom sink, there was no other place to wash the utensils after use. I think it would have been better off to do away with the dishes & utensils and let the guest get paper plates and plastic ware down the street. A great asset to the AGH were the restaurants within walking distance that catered to "real" and traditional foods of PR.

Our hosts were great and very accommodating. The were eager to answer questions and assist in every way possible. With the beach within easy walking distance, the AGH provides beach chairs, umbrella, toys etc. as available and as needed. Just help yourself and return them when finished. Evenings spent using the hot tub was wonderful and relaxing after playing tourist.

Although the guesthouse provides a great tropical experience, don't go looking for the over the top decorations. The décor was functional and utilitarian. Nothing more. My main complaint was the wussy shower that was in our bathroom. A new shower head with increased water pressure would have made the room perfect for us. That being said, overall this was a very good experience.

Room Tip: The rooms sizes vary so be sure to inquire when booking. The street can be very noisy during the ev...

I had 5 people in my group and we all enjoyed staying in the large studio. There were two full sized beds and 1 cot. The cot was very uncomfortable though so I would not recommend it. The location is close to the beach and Emeo provided towels, beach chairs, floating board, etc. He was very nice and gave us a map of what restaurants to check out around the area. The bakery across the street is awesome. There are only about 5 parking spaces but that wasn't a problem for us. There was a full sized refrigerator, a small kitchen with utensils, plates, etc. which we hardly used. I would recommend staying here.

The hot tub is extremely small though. We didn't use it.

We stayed here on March 4th and I received my deposit back on March 21st.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Andalucia Guest House for four nights during the third week of March and it was very pleasant. The check-in staff was great, and Emeo was very helpful. He responded very quickly to an e-mail I sent him while there (he was not working at the time) because there was not a microwave in our room--the next morning he was there early and provided us with the microwave. The accommodations and location were good (close to beach and restaurants), and the tips from the staff on what to do / where to find things we needed were very helpful. We enjoyed staying away from the main tourist center, the experience felt a little more authentic than it probably would have at the major hotels or resorts. The room was also cleaned everyday. We really enjoyed a frozen yogurt place called 'Yogen Fruz' that was about a 7-10 minute walk down the street of the guest house, towards the bigger hotels.

Room Tip: Our room ended up being a little smaller than we thought--they do seem to have a big variety in term...

Pros: The best part of the stay was the gentleman checking us in (we did not meet the owner). He was extremely friendly and helpful. He gave us detailed information about restaurants, the beach, what was available to us at the guest house, taxis - everything we needed. Additionally, he talked a bit about the history and culture of San Juan. We arrived early and were able to leave our bags until the room was ready. The guest house is very close to a nice beach. They provide chairs and beach towels for guests. There are a wide variety of restaurants within a 20 minute walk. They provide detailed maps showing restaurants, where to catch a bus, how to get to the beach, etc. There is also a wonderful coffee/pastry shop almost across the street that serves coffee, sandwiches, beer, wine - and the biggest selection of amazing pastries, cakes, cookies, etc. The bed was comfortable - no problem sleeping. They provide sodas, chips, water for a minimal charge of $1.00 on the honor system. There is a nice sitting area on the rooftop.

Cons: We knew we were booking a small room, but the room we had next to the check in area and across from the hot tub was very tiny - big enough for a queen bed, small "desk" and chair, small wardrobe, mini fridge, and nightstand. There was barely room to walk around the bed or for a suitcase and backpack.

What a charming little guest house! We stayed here on our final night. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly. I had called ahead to see if we could store our luggage if we arrived before our room was ready and they were very nice about it. Our room was ready on our arrival.
They have so many nice little touches, like the beach towels and the laminated maps of the neighborhood. Oh, and the outdoor shower and beach gear (like chairs) that you could borrow. We stowed our luggage and headed out to return our rental car and explore Old San Juan.
Our room was on the first floor, facing the street, so there was a bit of traffic noise (I sleep with earplugs when I travel, my friend doesn't -- we both slept great!). Comfy beds and you can tell they put some thought into making it a welcoming room. Fridge, table with two chairs, lots of room to move around, store suitcases, etc. Loved the painting by Emeo over the beds! It was very clean, and had a nice attached bath with a shower. My only complaint would be that the bathroom door handle didn't work very well (but there was a door stop on the bottom that kept the door closed just fine) -- and I forgot to tell the owners! Not a very glamorous place, but inviting, secure and friendly.
The next day we used the handy map to navigate the three short blocks through a nice neighborhood to the beach. They'd also told us where a (fantastic) beach front restaurant was. So we got to enjoy a wonderful last morning in San Juan before heading home.
They called us a cab too. It was very convenient to the airport.
All in all, I loved this place. A terrific value for the money and really nice helpful owners. If I return to San Juan, I will probably stay here again.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, ask to be away from the street.

We stayed here on our way back to the states from Vieques. We had a nice studio upstairs, and the innkeeper was very friendly. It's very close to a nice beach, and within walking distance of some nice restaurants. It has a good jacuzzi that we enjoyed, and overall it was a terrific inn for the price.
