“Old San Juan Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

My wife, grown son and I travelled to Puerto Rico for a spring get away. While on the island, we wanted to spend some time in Old San Juan. After searching, I found the Chateau Cervantes. We all could not have been more pleased with the hotel. Our room was a suite which accommodated us nicely. The hotel is very centrally located and the staff was extremely helpful with our touristy needs. We all would recommend the hotel as a great choice in Old San Juan.

This was a great experience!

The location is perfect! The Old San Juan free bus service stops right in front of the hotel. The hotel is two blocks from the cruise ships and across the street is the public parking lot. A block away is the CVS, which has a selection of groceries and beverages. Next door to the hotel are great restaurants and my Starbucks is just a few doors away.

The hotel was nicely updated and very clean. The best part was the wonderful people who work there. Michele is the manager. Her friendliness and service was above and beyond! Everyone else was great as well! The free breakfast was wonderful and full of calories. A few more healthy options would be nice!

I read complaints about the city noise at night. Yes, there is a lot of noise on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. What can I tell you! The Puerto Ricans like to party on the weekend. Our room looked over the street and our first night was a Sunday. This is a city location and the people are happy when they party! While I was concerned, I slept like a baby. So did my wife. The bed and pillows were wonderful and we were tried from sightseeing. If you don’t like the noise, stay here during the week. If you like the sound of fun, come on the weekend! You have been warned so no more complaints, please!

Overall this place was great! There is really no reason for me to give them anything less than the maximum stars. Excellent!

Room Tip: The mini sweet we had was on the street! Nice room!

My wife and I recently took a seven night Southern Caribbean cruise from San Juan Puerto Rico. Any flight on the day of departure would have got us into SJC after the ship sailed. since we would have to arrive the day before we decided to book a hotel for a couple of nights and at least see Old town San Juan.
My wife was looking on Bookit and saw Chateau Cervantes. Located on Recinto Sur it is ideally located and every part of Old Town San Juan is within easy walking distance. Taxis have fixed charges based on zones and Chateau Cervantes was a short, 20 minute ride from the airport and cost $27 for both of us and our luggage, including tip.
The hotel itself is small- only 12 rooms, if I recall correctly. But this just serves to make it more intimate.
Our room was on the 5th floor. Small, but cozy without being cramped. Adequate closet and drawer space, TV in English and Spanish and a nice bathroom, with a great shower- good, hot water and water pressure. There's a safe in the closet for valuables. The hotel provides bottled water and ice, and will happily bring more if you need them. The air conditioning was rather fierce and the room was actually on the cold side when we went in, but was comfortable after we adjusted the thermostat up several degrees. The queen size bed was firm and comfortable, just the way we like it.
All the staff are very friendly, helpful and approachable, particularly Michelle, of whom we saw the most and who went out of her way to make sure we had a wonderful stay. When we arrived she gave us a local map and pointed out several restaurants and conveniences such as the nearest CVS (a 5 minute walk one block over).
A continental breakfast was included in the price of the room and was basic, satisfying and a perfect start to the day. Very good coffee. We covered just about everything we needed to see in old Town in the one full day and one half day we were there, even though the local trolley- which is free- was not running because of the Easter holiday. The hotel has free WiFi in the lobby, although the signal was not the strongest we were able to make connection and check email etc.
On check out they called a taxi to take us to the nearby Pan American cruise terminal.
We were very impressed and should we ever find ourselves back in San Juan we will definitely stay there again. We would not hesitate to recommend Chateau Cervantes most highly to anyone.

We chose this hotel because we thought we could walk to the cruise ship. Unfortunately the pier moved and we had to take another taxi to the pier. The hotel is quite charming and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We booked 3 rooms and only had a complaint about one of the rooms. It was moldy and smelly and the shower didn't drain. We found out the next morning that if we had said something they could have move us...our mistake, no fault of the hotel.
The rooms were noisy but we knew that going in from previous reviews. There isn't a restaurant on the premises but several within walking distance.
The hotel is located to easily walk to most attractions in old town.
Since we only stayed one night I would recommend it highly. If you are planning to stay longer be aware the hotel is noisy but I think by stuffing a couple of towels under the balcony door this could help. The continental breakfast was wonderful. Several choices of pastries' and toast, yogurt, cereal and European style coffee (yum). Even though this is no longer close to the pier I would definitely stay here again for a pre cruise hotel.

Room Tip: Ask at time of booking for the quietest room!

DMCarpentier,
Thank you for reviewing your recent stay. We're very happy you enjoyed your one night stay before embarking your cruise. Guest need to be aware that not all cruises dock right in Old San Juan's Pier 4. The only one that does that right now is Carnival on Sundays. Thankfully, the Panamerican dock is just a short and inexpensive taxi ride from our hotel. Old San Juan is known for its vibrant night life on the weekends but during the week , it is mostly pretty quiet as things close earlier. So glad you enjoyed our complimentary breakfast and wonderful staff. Until next time!
