“helpful managers, good value”
Reviewed 24 January 2010

Located in a mainly residential neighborhood, and a few minutes walk to Ocean Park Beach, we found the the Coqui del Mar to be a good value. We did a lot of comparing of other lodging, and found this to be reasonably priced for what you get. We stayed in the Pescado unit. While the unit shows its age, it was clean, the furnishings were serviceable and the kitchen provided what we need. We especially liked that the unit had a computer with internet access, which was very helpful. It has no assigned parking, but we were always able to find parking nearby on the street (although the hotel was not full when we were there). The managers (Noyda and Neal) were very helpful, answering questions and providing recommendations for driving directions, restaurants, etc. There was easy access to the highway, with a 15-20 minute drive to the city of San Juan. We also appreciated that they make an effort to be environmentally friendly, with such features as ceiling fans (besides the AC) and solar hot water. (although this may be why sometimes the water was not as hot as other times).

We recommend visiting Old San Juan, El Morro and San Cristobal Forts, El Yunke National Rainforest, the Yunke Zipline Adventure, and the Rio Camuy Cave Park.

Coqui del Mar is almost perfect, but not quite. During my eight day stay there with my husband, we found small but consistently present frusturations. The greatest thing about this location is the value. We stayed during high season and were very satisfied with the cost of staying there, Considering its location there was only one restaurant around that we felt comfortable walking to because of a VERY questionable neighborhood located about 3 blocks south. But a plus.. it is less than a block and half to Ocean Park! The guest house is cute and warm, but only 1 out 6 taxi drivers were able to find the location despite Coqui providing written directions in both Spanish and English.
Some of my next assessments are circumstantial but here are some of our "speed bumps." When we arrived the door code we were given was incorrect. (It had been changed without notifying us) On any other night of the year it would probably not have been an issue, but we arrived on New Years Eve at 9 pm. Therefore of course, Noyda and Neal were out enjoying the evening as would be expected. After standing outside of our room for over 45 minutes, by some stoke of luck my husband guessed the right code four dgit code. My husband's biggest concern was the water temperature never got above luke warm and he HATES a cold shower. (We stayed in two different rooms not connected to the main buliding). Both rooms were clean but both showers were questionable. Noyda was very helpful and nice. She gave great advice about trying some off the beaten path places and was quick to respond to any concerns.

We stayed in two different rooms. First 4 nights were in El Mango. This room is small for two people and not set up well to for utilizing the small area. The room was clean, had a fridge/microwave, but the restroom was only slightly above tolerable. They accurately describe that is a "RV" style restroom with the toliet in a small tiled in closet area. It didn't seem clean enough for me to shower without shoes on. The bed is supported on the bed frame by thin wood slats, which were slightly too short. This caused various boards to randomly slip and scaring us with a loud thud/jolt of the bed. If I were to make suggestions for the room... add some shelves on the wall near the sink. It would help make the room more user friendly along with a luggage rack.
The next 4 nights were spent in La Luna. Overall we enjoyed this room better. Once again a very small bathroom. My husband was unable to sit straight on the toliet because of the sink. He had to sit with his legs turned out at 2:00. And the shower is better decorated but once again I was unable to shower without shoes on.
Overall, we liked this place. For the value, we would stay again. I choose this place based ONLY on tripadvisor.com so I wanted to provide an accurate picture of what Coqui del Mar is and isn't. It is a cute place at a great value. It isn't without it "quirks" and if you are unable to roll with the flow, don't stay there. But I will!

Words cannot describe how wonderful a stay we had at Coqui Del Mar. Everything was perfect. Noyda was amazing and beyond accomodating. She really went above and beyond. The rooms were very spacious and had all the amenities one could desire. The location is perfect as well. In walking distance of a beautiful beach. I would definitely stay here again!

We have been to Puerto Rico twice and both times we stayed at the Coqui Del Mar... It is a lovely place to stay steps away from the beach! The management makes you feel like family. The first year we stayed we got there and then so did a tropical storm, Noyda and Neil made sure that we were safe and comfortable. They are very kind, thoughtful, giving people who have a wealth of information. There are near by grocery stores, restaurants, shopping and beautiful historical sites. The area offers plenty of things to do and a beach just steps away if you don't want to do anything! the only thing we recommend it that you get a rental car, it makes travel and adventures totally uncluttered by not having to stick to a bus schedule. We love the Coqui Del Mar and hope you have as great of a trip and stay there as we did!

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in Late December and were very pleased with the accomodations. If you are looking for a large resort hotel with swimming pools and restaurants, then this place is not for you. However, if you are looking for a place a block from the ocean in a neighborhood of homes, within easy walking distance to good restaurants, this is the place. Rooms are not large, but then again, if you are on vacation, who stays in their room. We were a 5 minute walk to the city bus line which was great since we didn't need to rent a car. Our hosts, Neal and Noyda, were wonderful. They were always there when we needed help or directions. I would definitely stay here again.

My friends and I (eight of us) only stayed here for a night, but once we first stepped in the house, we knew we should've stayed longer. It's strategically located near beaches (Ocean Park Beach, Playa Isla Verde etc), restaurants and nightlife spots, while being in a quiet and safe neighborhood. I'd definitely choose this place again the next time I visit Puerto Rico!

This guesthouse is a truly quaint find for us, since it did not have the glitz and touristic feel of Isla Verde nor Condado. Everything about it was cozy and quiet, our room El Mango was right in the backyard full of flowers and plants. We felt like locals and for the 5 days we spent there, felt like we were actually living in San Juan rather than being in a sea of tourists. Our host Noyda was very nice to us and gave us personalized recommendations on restaurants nearby. The location (Punta la maria) was right between the west condado/old san juan and the east isla verde, it is also only 1 block away from the beach. This location gave us easy access to our surroundings, and it is also close to the bus C53 (which runs on the main beachside street all the way to old san juan).
For the price of 70USD per night, it was a great deal for travellers on a budget. Although our room was fairly tight (El Mango is the smallest room available), it was okay for us since we are a couple.
All in all, our experience at Coqui Del Mar was something that we are very happy about and proudly recommended to other people we met throughout our trip!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
If you want to experience Puerto Rico like a local while still having all the conveniences of home, this is your place. We make you feel at home. You have private personal space (all rooms have private kitchens and private bathrooms), while in a beach side neighborhood setting away from the crowded tourist areas. You will experience some of the best Puerto Rico has to offer while living like a local, visiting the restaurants frequently visited by locals (no chain restaurants near us). We are in the Ocean Park beach area of San Juan, in between Old San Juan and the international airport. We are 3 minutes walk to the nearest beach. Ocean Park beach is one of the locals's favoites, and also a preferred spot for kite surfing and windsurfers. We are 5 minutes walk to the tourist bus route (which goes to the casinos and to Old San Juan) and walkable to restaurants and grocery stores. Each of our units have full kitchen, free WiFi, cable TV/DVD, Apple TV, in room safes, and an Ipod player. We strive to provide more than expected, and I think you will find that with us, from the beach chairs, or bicycles to the in room safes, there are never extra charges. One of the best things about us is our live in management, Noyda and Neal, who call Coqui del Mar home and welcome you as if it is your home as well. They are local experts and can help you find a great restaurant, plan a special event, or enjoy a chat. Our courtyard, bar-b-que and jacuzzi are great for meeting other guests. If you are looking for personal service and a unique, eco-friendly (we have solar hot water supplemented by electric, ceiling fans supplemented by ACs, and offer recycling), and a clean guest house for a reasonable price, then check us out. We are not a Marriott and offer our own unique sense of quirky and intimate Puerto Rico. Come join us. *Our free parking is on a public street in front of our location. Not difficult to find a spot, but it is not designated parking for our guest house and is open to all. * Airport transportation acknowledges that there is taxi service from the airport. **Free parking is on street parking ... more   less
