I was looking for the cheapest place possible that wouldn't be painful, and based on reviews selected this hotel. I was incredibly pleasantly surprised. This isn't a resort, but it is a sweet, small (about 20 rooms), clean, comfortable place. Possible complaints: the rooms are small, there's only about 20 TV channels, and "breakfast" is some SaraLee muffins and orange juice. But for the budget traveler, this is luxurious - a great pool and hot tub, wonderful downy pillows, incredibly kind desk managers (who constantly anticipated and met our needs) in a fantastic location - five minutes walk to Condado Beach, and a short taxi or bus ride to Old San Juan. Make sure to get the internet prices - they're about half of the regular ones.

Decent stay for the price (booked through expedia for less than $100 a night).. But there are so many options around that I may not return here.. esp if I have the time to plan.. and here's why...

Pros:
- Reasonably priced
- Good location
- Almost free parking ($5 for entire stay)
- Friendly staff
- Free internet (though its not very fast)

Cons:
- Extreme water temperature in the shower... It was either hot or cold…
- Inconsistent housekeeping (for half our stay we were missing towels!)
- No room key (since the plastic keys were not working, the desk person had to let us into our room each time... very inconvenient)
- No breakfast as mentioned by other reviews.. Muffins and coffee in lobby

This is a small hotel for those of you who want a place to sleep and relax between tours and excursions in Puerto Rico. The rooms are small, but clean, and the beds are very comfortable (we had 4 pillows, a comforter, a blanket and a throw on ours). We stayed in room 302, which had two windows but not much of a view (we didn't care much about the view, anyway). Our room had a flat screen TV against the wall opposite the bed (17 channels of basic cable, 4 of them spanish, the rest in english), a desk (with a lamp) a rolling office chair, an overstuffed easy chair (not a recliner though), and two end tables (one with a lamp). The floors were tile, and mopped daily by the maid. The only trouble we had with the room was that the first night we were there they had forgotten to give us wash cloths with our towels, but a quick trip to the desk solved that. Service was excellent, and the desk clerks (all of them) were extremely helpful in giving us directions and maps. they have a very small pool in the back of the hotel, but it is only big enough for a family or two, and we never did use it - with several incredible beaches within two blocks, it seemed kind of silly to go sit in the pool!
The location is excellent, between Ashford and Magdelena streets (a half block before they come together on their west end), with plenty of restaurants, stores and the beach within a block or two of the hotel. There is a Walgreens a half block away, around the corner, and a 24 hour mini-mart diagonally across the street by the post office. Parking is available for hotel guests for a small fee (I paid $5 for the entire week we were there). The lot is behind the hotel, and you must walk about a half block around the corner to get to it from the hotel - but it's an easy walk and well lit. The lot is secure and well guarded at all times. There is a bus stop right around the corner ($0.75 per person to travel to/from Old San Juan), and a taxi stand that always has a few taxis waiting (day or night).
All in all, this was a great little hotel for us to stay at while we ran around exploring Puerto Rico. If you are the kind of person who expects to spend a lot of time in a hotel (rooms service, fitness room, etc) then this is NOT your hotel. If you are looking for an economical place to sleep and use as a 'base' for your vacation travels, you really can't ask for a better location. We will definitely stay at Le Consulate the next time we come to San Juan.

Lesson learned: you get what you pay for. While the staff was pleasant, I have to say that we weren't that thrilled by this hotel. The room was small, one small window. We had a room at the back toward the pool with a patio, which was nice, but when we arrived there was someone's clothing strewn about outside. It was clean, but not really clean. The pool was very cloudy (but I hope it was clean!). In the end, it would have been fine for a night or two, but we wished we'd spent a little more and stayed elsewhere.

Very cute, clean hotel in Condado, San Juan. You're just one block from the ocean and you have all the convenience of San Juan and Old San Juan. Be sure and use Kayak.com to find the cheapest price for this hotel.

We stayed for two separate nights (arriving at 4 am the first time). The first room had a noisy air conditioner and was a bit dingy but we didn't do anything about it at 4am! Breakfast is a voucher for a local cafe. It's a bit of a walk for the food and coffee was great. Our second room was much better albeit it still a bit small.

Although there's no place on Trip Advisor for reviews of car hire companies, I'd like to commend Charlie Car in San Juan. Their price was very good, the cars were fine and they had very useful shuttles to/from the airport and cruise port. At one stage, they let us leave our luggage at their office after we'd dropped off the car then took us to the airport several hours later when we'd been on a tour of the old town by bus.
