A very nice place to hang out, relax and know a little of city's history. Located between the Candelaria Cathedral and the City Hall it's a quiet and relaxing spot.

The Plaza or "City Square" was the life of any city in the early founding days. All activity and construction was around it, and until the advent of the shopping malls, the main city stores were all around it. The Mayagüez one displays an array of very interesting XIX century bronze statues as well as a statue of Christopher Columbus (Colón in Spanish) as its centerpiece, surrounded by a fountain. The cathedral is in one extreme and the City Hall in the other, both pretty interesting buildings architecturally. Close by is the Teatro Yagüez, a still more interesting building, where you might be able to attend a concert or play.

During special occasions there are shows in the night, mostly on weekends. There are also kiosks selling souvenirs and typical treats, so you can get the local flavor. The square is decorated very interestingly during the holidays, with lights and sometimes light and water shows, so it is a must see.

History buffs and architecture aficionados will love the plaza. The town also throws amazing parties there during the holiday season.

Was there on a Saturday night at 5pm and it was quiet. Not a whole lot of folks and a lot of homeless people.
