Italian, French, Dutch paintings. New addition and extra exhibition space opened last year. Worth a visit. Looking forward to the new restaurant Al Sur and the café, which were not open last December.

This modern, world-class museum is a must, especially for non-islanders who want to understand the vision and culture of Puerto Rico - many outstanding resident artist from the past 200 years. Also has a very respectable array of European works spanning the centuries.

What a wonderful find! What a surprise! My husband and I traveled to the south side of the island, and visited the world class Museo de Arte de Ponce. It is full of exceptional fine pieces of art that no museum on the island can surpass, including any in San Juan.
The works of art are housed in a beautiful building. It recently reopened after a couple of years of remodeling. My husband and I paid the small admission fee to tour the museum. We signed up for an English-speaking tour of the museum. There is so much to see that it is overwhelming. Museo de Arte de Ponce is not a one-time visit. After a good portion of the tour was over, we broke off to see what everyone else has been raving about.
Like many, our favorite painting was “Flaming June”. It is one of the most familiar works of late-Victorian art, probably better known than its artist, Frederic Leighton (1830-1896). He was one of the leading artists of his age, and belonged to the "aesthetic" movement. “Flaming June” is so popular that it is featured on countless posters. It is so popular that in 2008, it went on loan across the Pond to the Tate. Many are mesmerized by the orange glow that envelops the sleeping woman. There is a warmth that radiates from her dress into her arms and cheeks.
Museo de Arte de Ponce houses a diverse collection of art ranging from the 14th century to today. This includes the Pre-Raphaelite paintings. In 1849, a radical group of artists calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood took the British art world by storm. Set in mythical or literary pasts, populated by doomed lovers and femmes fatales, these sumptuous paintings fell out of favor with the critical establishment. They were dismissed as irrelevant about 100 years ago, but are now popular once again. This includes me who found this museum’s collection to be the best I have ever seen.
If you can spare the time and get a car, make the 75 minute drive down PR-52 to Ponce. You will be happy that you made it to the best museum in all of Puerto Rico.

The "Museo de Arte de Ponce" is a world class museum with exceptional fine pieces of art. It recently opened after a couple of years of remodeling and now is more outstanding than before. World renown collections, great staff, incredibly low admission fee and in the heart of Ponce, PR. Home to the famous Flaming June! Only 70mins from San Juan, PR. Definitively a must see in PR.

On our last trip to Ponce this Museum was on top of our must see list. There is a small admission fee, but it's actually nothing compared to what this place has to offer. World class showcase of exceptional fine pieces of art. This museum has been opened since 1965 in its current building, which its beautiful by the way. We were told that it has over 3,000 pieces of art from all over the World. To me one of the most beautiful pieces is the "Flaming June". Outstanding!
