On our first trip we had stayed in Rectangular in loft 6, which we really liked, so we weren't certain we wanted to try Solaris, the new house. In the end we opted for Solaris, Loft 1 and although it wasn't as colorful as our last room, we loved it. The long graceful dining table inspired us to cook, though mostly breakfasts. (Ample cooking supplies but where are the potholders, ouch!) The setup encourages self sufficiency rather than offering a fully catered environment; that being said, everything you truly need is readily at hand. Yes, there were a few mosquitos, but not many, and the fan easily kept them at bay. Falling asleep under the stars, washed by soft breezes throughout the night, and waking in the open air is true luxury. The trees on the property are very lovely, soft swaying pines, wish I knew what kind. The beach snorkeling was less vibrant this year, due to the weather, but saw my 1st moray eel at green beach & our expedition with "little boat sailing" was also fun, spotted several stingrays..Hix is the perfect pre-holiday getaway, a beautiful, tranquil place to decompress before returning home!

Room Tip: Rectangular loft 6 & Solaris one or wo!

Thanks for your honest review of your stay with us, and we're glad you enjoyed your stay in Casa Solaris. We have since added pot holders to all of our lofts (including a few other surprises), and hope you will enjoy your next stay even more. The pine trees you enjoyed listening to are an Australian Pine called Casuarina, and they certainly do provide a constant, wonderful sound. Hope to see you again soon!

I will echo what another reviewer said - Hix isn't for everyone, but if you are looking for a completely zen-like, peaceful, blend-in-with-nature kind of experience - look no further. The rooms are so simple in design that your senses are aware only of the beautiful surroundings - the stunning views, the sounds of the birds, frogs, and other wildlife (we joked at night that our neighbors were loud ...), the breezes through your room. Taking a shower in an open-air shower is an amazing experience. Ditto falling asleep watching the moon rise. No, there's no hair dryer, no tv, no wi-fi in the room, no a/c (really don't need it). But while we do like those comforts at home, we wanted to completely unplug, and we sure did.

The staff too is warm and welcoming - thank you Liz, for making us feel welcome from our first phone call to book a room! And Joanne and Sarah Rose, too. Great recommendations for us, like Abe's biobay tour and Sebastian's 1/2 day sail. Both amazing. Open air yoga there is a great experience too. And DO rent a car, it's a must.

Thanks for the review Susan. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and were able to unplug for a bit. And yes we agree, Hix is not for everyone. We find that folks either love it or hate, and that's OK. We hope you come back soon!

I would like to thank Liz and all the wonderful staff at the Hix for a great stay. This is my second time staying at the property. I first stay was awesome and this one was better. Solaris, their new building has amazing rooms, especially Solaris 1 & 2 which are on the top floor and have great views. Upon check out, my girlfriend left her beach hat in the room. We called the hotel, Liz promptly located the hat and mailed it to us. the property is great a for romantic couple getaway! thank you!

We enjoyed the experience of the Hix Island house. The architecture and siting of the buildings was great. We had a second floor room which had great breezes and a nice view. It was fun to hang out in the room to cook breakfast, read or just enjoy the view. I like the outdoor shower and the comfortable lounge shirts.

I'm okay with this eco-hotel's policy of not changing bedding everyday, but it would have been nice if they could have at least brushed the sand from the sheets. And I would like to have had some spices in the kitchen and water bottles by the beds.

Room Tip: We were in Rec 5 which had a good view, good privacy and very good airflow.

For a start, the island of Vieques is well worth visiting - great beaches, great countryside and really nice people. The Hix House iBooks amazing - you feel as if you have wandered into a shoot for Wallpaper Magazine. The buildings and rooms are stunning to look at - all bare concrete and sharp angles. The downside of this brutalist design is that the rooms are really rather uncomfortable and oppressive to stay in. We stayed in one of the newer buildings which are open to back and front so there is a constant breeze through the room. This keeps bugs to a minimum but you do feel very exposed and unprotected - we didn't sleep at all well. The self catering food is really great - we enjoyed making our breakfast in the morning before heading for the beach.

Overall the project is admirable and Eco-friendly but it isn't really a venue for a relaxing break.

Our first visit to Vieques. It was a PERFECT week for relaxing. It was a new experience to be without wifi/ac/television in a hotel room. But, we got to slow down and experience a less hectic rhthym. There is wifi at the front desk and at various places around the island. The lack of a/c didn't bother at all, and it was way more enjoyable to appreciate the island environment rather than closing all the windows and burning energy to stay cool. It's great to make the day up as you go along and not have too many plans, just go with the flow. Bring some good books and prepare to unwind. Leave the attitude on the mainland. This place is how vacation should be!

Room Tip: You might want to bring a clip on book light and/or some movies for your laptop. I thought I might b...

Very cool Eco-resort built into the landscape. We had a room on the third floor and felt like we had the place to ourselves. The room was large and spacious, and we had a balcony area with two lounge chairs overlooking the property. All breakfast items were provided for us to cook (eggs, milk, coffee beans, bread, fruit) and they provided a Brita water filter. Beach towels, chairs, gaslight, lanterns, bug spray, yoga mats...this place provides it all. it's open-air, no a/c or screens, with outdoor shower. It's designed to be sustainable with the environment, and the buildings take advantage of the trade-winds that flow up the hill passing through the open-air room and provide cooling as well as keep the bugs away. The first night or two the bugs were not an issue, but the winds died down and the bugs were out. we just used bug spray and mosquito netting and we were fine. we really enjoyed our stay here. It's very peaceful and quiet. i would only recommend this to those travelers that like Eco-hotels and like to stay at places that are unique and minimalist and integrate with nature.

Room Tip: Rotunda building room 3 on the third floor...very private and comfortable, close to the pool.
