“Charming hotel, wonderful view, terrific breakfasts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2011

We stayed in this lovely, small hotel over Christmas. The staff there helped us secure a low airfare to Vieques and a rental car, which is most important to have on this island. Although not located on the beach, it has a terrific view of the Caribbean, cool breezes and a pretty pool with fountain. The hotel is outside the busy section of Esperanza which contributes to the peaceful, quiet experience. We were given beach chairs, towels and access to books, magazines and a computer. There is some wifi available, but it is not constant. The breakfasts were delicious and if you request it, the friendly staff will pack you a picnic lunch in a backpack complete with ice packs. We enjoyed everything about the hotel, but even with insect repellant, we received a large number of mosquito bites. All of the restaurants are open air, so it is more of an island problem. I would definitely recommend this really charming hotel, just be diligent in your use of insect repellant.

Room Tip: We had room 6 by the pool which was fine. My daughters had room 23 which has a gorgeous view of the...

When we first started planning our vacation to Vieques I thought I wanted to stay at the W. We love the W hotels and have stayed at many of their properties. We were going over thanksgiving weekend and the W was twice the price so I started looking around. I found a lot of good reviews and thought we'd try a B&B for a change. It turned out to be a great decision. The hotel is located in walking distance to one of the popular bio-bay tours and a good mexican restaurant, where we ate several nights after taking bio-bay tours. Everything was nice - the room, the pool, breakfast, the view from our room - all really nice and quaint. We liked the "honor" bar which is stocked with all the water, wine and spirits you could ask for and you are on the honor system to record whatever you take in a log. It was also terrific that they had beach chairs and coolers you could take to the beach with you. All very nice. We got a great package deal off the web - 3 nights with car and breakfast for about $700. We will go back next time we are in this part of the world.

This small hotel is located in a quite spot with beautiful views of the Caribbean coastline. The staff is very friendly, and our room, with a balcony view of the ocean, was extremely pleasant. The room includes breakfast, which was delicious and plentiful!

My wife and I (Amber, her review is below) stayed here for a week in early November with 30 of our closest friends and wedding guests. We had the time of our lives. The Hacienda was homely, relaxing, accommodating, and was the perfect place for us. Linda, Burr, and the rest of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

The pool is a ton of fun with great views, and all of the rooms were clean and spacious. We stayed in the suit, the Casita Linda and it was perfect. Granted, there were mosquitoes here and there, but we did have a habit of leaving the door open as people would come and go to the pool. Some bug spray will take care of that.

Make sure you take advantage of the breakfast. Easily some of the best food we had on the island. I am still waking up wanting some spicy hash browns and wheat toast! Last but not least, Zach, is one of the coolest dogs around. Being pet owners, we missed our 2 dogs while we were on vacation but having Zach around made it a bit easier.

If you're going to Vieques and you're looking for a place to stay where the staff is down-to-earth and want that homely feel, make sure you stay at the Hacienda. In fact, even if you aren't staying in Vieques but you are planning a trip to San Juan, make it a point to visit the island for just 1 day. Staying at the Hacienda is worth the trip alone.

- Steve

Because our scheduled arrival at Vieques was late in the afternoon (after the rental car agency had closed), the staff had arranged to have our rental car available for us at the hotel. Our adventure started right away - when no taxis arrived after 15 minutes waiting, Jim, the front desk manager, provided names of several drivers, and we were quickly able to find one who came to pick us up. Our room had a nice view of the Carribbean. It was very homey and comfortable. We had a corner room, and had a nice cross-breeze that kept us comfortable at night. The staff was very friendly and helped us find great snorkeling locations. We really enjoyed the morning breakfasts, as well as the box lunches that you could order for an additional fee. The swimming pool was large and great for swimming laps, and also had a great view of the sea. The only downside (and this wasn't the hotel's fault) was that we could hear some distant loud music from the bars in Esperanza, although that was a very minor issue. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hacienda Tamarindo.

My husband and I stayed at the Hacienda Tamarindo in early December. Despite dire predictions on weather.com, the weather was very nice. We only had rain one night, while eating dinner. The Inn has many gracious touches, including beach chairs, a cooler, and beach towels in the room. The morning full breakfast on the patio is a lovely touch, and provides excellent value. The pool is quite lovely and overlooks the Caribbean. The owners were gracious and charming and made some excellent suggestions on restaurants. Jim (who worked at the front desk) was particularly helpful and always gave us good information on where to go and what to see. Vieques is a beautiful, wild island. Driving is not for the faint of heart. The roads are narrow and rutted, vegetation grows abundantly, and horses tend to wander about nearly everywhere. But a car is a must! The Hacienda is about a mile from the smaller of the two towns on Vieques, and there is a fairly nice selection of places to eat there. Our personal favorite was the Tradewinds (recommended by Burr, the Inn's owner). The food is very good, the service is pleasant and the views are outstanding (right over the Caribbean). If you are looking for luxury and are used to 5 star resorts, then don't go to Vieques. With the possible exception of The W (on the windward side of the island), you won't find it. However, if you want to go to unspoiled beaches and enjoy some solitude, this may be the place. The staff at the Inn took care of all details for us, including having a rental car at the Inn for us when we checked in (we arrived at the airport at about 6:00 p.m., apparently too late for the rental car facility to be open). Getting to the Inn from the airport was challenging. Be forewarned, you have to call a cab from a list they provide. Our driver, Jorge, was very nice and recommended we go the town square on Saturday in Isabel Segunda to see the tree lighting. That was the only bit of "culture" we ever saw (as most places are run by and staffed by Americans). The Christmas tree was entirely comprised of water and pop bottles wired together! Very clever and actually pretty. The square was crowded and everyone seemed to be having a great time. We went back there a few nights later and it was nearly empty, but we went into the Catholic church by the square, where they were singing the rosary in Spanish. We were graciously welcomed to join and it was quite lovely. We went on the much hyped kayak trip on the bio-luminescent bay. Interesting but not our favorite experience. Finally, the guide books warned about theft and recommend not locking the car; however, we did not have any problems in this regard. Most locals were friendly and helpful. Also be aware that the bugs are everywhere and bug spray is a must.

Room Tip: room #5 has a patio overlooking the sea; very nice.

We split our vacation time between Vieques and San Juan arriving at the International Airport and then taking a taxi to Isla Grande Airport flying Vieques Air Link (Very Good!) to Vieques. We booked an outstanding special they had for three nights that included a jeep rental, a "Caribbean" view room that we upgraded to for a "Caribbean Deluxe" room that included a balcony (with that special we were able t take advantage of another where we flew two for the price of one on Vieques Air Link). If I had to do it over again I would have tried to get a room on the second floor that had a much wider and nicer view of the Caribbean. Do not get me wrong, our room, actually a 2 room, 2 bathroom suite was beautiful, well appointed and very clean with a nice view of its own. The second floor seemed to open up to a much wider view of the ocean and I would have given up the two rooms and bathrooms for the view for 3 nights. If I was staying for a week, I would have preferred the room I had!

The room came with two sand chairs and a cooler which was great for the beach with free ice to fill the cooler. This was much needed because the beaches are very secluded and have no refreshments anywhere nearby. The free breakfest exceeded our expectations and the omelets were delicious and prepared just right.

The owners were very helpful and accomadating and the property's mascot "Zach" was adorable. Many thanks to Joey who I booked the trip with and who checked us in. He was very patient in the booking process because I had to go back and forth several times because I had to change plans and had to do some cancellations that I did not want to lose deposits on. Their jeep rental company (Martiza's) was outstandng and please disregard any negative reviews about them. They were so helpful, could not have been nicer and upon the return did not try to rip me off with hidden fees!

The only negative which has been mentioned in a previous review or two is that the rooms have no safes in them. They do have a system that worked very well or at least all our cash and jewerly was returned intact, where you check your valuables in a locked bank bag that gets placed in the property's main safe for the length or your stay and you take out what you need as you go along. However, if you bring cash and jewerly and the island is known for car break ins, it would be great to have a very good in-room safe that you have access to 24/7. The problem is the office closes at 6-7pm and if you want something from your locked bank bag locked in their safe, you have to bother the owners upstairs.

In closing, this is a beautiful place to stay on a beautiful secluded island and Espernaza was quaint and a blast. All the emThe bio-bay tour was amazing that was booked for us by the Hacienda. On that note, all the employees were most helpful and kind and I compliment them all! Linda, Burr and Joey, keep up the great work and we hope to visit with you again soon!

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floor for a breathtaking view!
