We stayed here for four nights and were actually sad to go. It took us a while to get used to no TV, but we were so exhausted from all our snorkeling and swimming that we ended up going to bed early anyway. I expected the guests to mingle a little more in the library during the evenings, but people just seemed to go in to check their e-mail on the computer. Our room wasn't exactly luxurious, but was clean, comfortable, and big, and had everything we needed. The building is charming and the grounds are beautiful. Breakfast was delicious. I would not reccommend the hacienda if you like to sleep really late because the sounds from the breakfast area will wake you up at 8 am anyway. It was great to have beach towels and the honor bar was really useful as well. My only caution would be that Burr, the owner, can be a little bristly at first, but he is actually a really nice guy. The clientele was a mix of older and younger couples - the hotel does not take kids under 15.

My husband and I stayed at the Hacienda for our 21st anniversary January 16-19, 2006 and loved it. This inn is not for the "high-rise" traveler. It is cozy, welcoming and is decorated lovingly by its owners with an eclectic collection of art and hand-crafted treasures. Our gracious and knowledgeable hosts, Linda and Burr, WERE available for advice and suggestions for meals and sight-seeing. Joey and Jim, our concierges, were helpful with reservations for jeep rentals(must do), dinners(Trade Winds, Cafe Media Luna), and the bio-bay tour (must, must do).

The rooms and views are beautiful (suggest room 23, Caribbean Deluxe). Full breakfast is yummy...big and filling (the condensed version of the Times is great) and the girls will cook up anything you like (within reason) and pack you box lunches for the beach.Even if you have an early flight home, they won't send you away hungry. Don't miss Burr's orientation...he is a plethera of information: funny, useful, historical and bizarre.

Take advantage of the honor bar: sign out some drinks and sit by the beautiful pool overlooking the caribbean when you arrive..wonderful. You can walk to the seaside town of Esperanza for dinner and more drinks within 10 minutes...very safe, but the road is a little dark after sundown.

The Inn, the people, the views, the location, the whole island is beautiful and make for an extraordinary vacation for anyone loving quiet beauty.
Highly recommended, we will be back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Vieques’ Hacienda Tamarindo offers 17 very special rooms, each lovingly and creatively designed and decorated by owner, Linda Vail -- her swan song after over 20 years as a commercial interior designer. Each guest room and public space is unique; imaginatively spiced with a lifetime’s accumulation of art, antiques, and collectibles. An ancient Tamarind tree in the lobby atrium majestically rises three stories through the center of the building. Terraces, courtyards, and sitting rooms offer ample space for relaxation and conversation. The Hacienda is perched on a hilltop with spectacular 180 degree views of the Caribbean -- from sunrise to sunset; looking down on the bedazzling, ever-changing myriad of blue, emerald and turquoise waters. Caribbean trade winds and lazy paddle fans keep you cool and comfortable. Here, you can fall asleep to a tree frog serenade and awake to the smell of jasmine on the gentle sea breeze. ... more   less
