It's been a while, but we went to Vieques and stayed at La Finca in March 2000 for senior spring break. It's not the place for you if you're looking for mints on your pillow or luxury amenities. At the time it was operated by a couple of young guys from the states, and the owner was in the US. 3 of my girlfriends and I shared a room, which was a bit like summer camp. :) The rooms had a fun, rustic feel. The first floor contains the manager's desk, the living room (with a library of paperback books, board games, cards, etc.) and the kitchen. There is also a huge deck off the first floor with a fabulous view and a porch swing. The rooms are on the upper level(s). I don't remember if there were showers inside, there had to have been. We used the outdoor showers the whole time we were there, since the weather was so great. We were allowed to use anything on the property, so we grilled on the deck one night and had a great time with the guys who were running the place. (I can't remember their names!) But I do remember Edwin! Edwin was the gardener, I don't know if he's still there. We talked to him every morning, he's so much fun!!!!!!!! He cut down coconuts for us and told us ghost stories of the island (there were lots of sugar cane plantations, hence stories of people getting their heads cut off with machetes, etc!). He only spoke Spanish, so he's more fun if you can speak spanish, too! There's also a pool, which is very nice, although the beaches on the island are where we spent most of our time.
There was also the dog, Sammy, and his girlfriend, Lady Luna. They're sooo cute! I wonder if they're still there, too!
On a side note, the J Crew models stayed there while doing the shoot in Vieques and the catalogs from that year featured lots of pics taken at La Finca. Like the deck where we bbq-ed, and there's even pics of Sammy! :)
Vieques is a great island!! There's a bioluminescent pond at Mosquito Bay, it was the coolest thing ever! And the beaches are wonderful, you can find some really secluded ones and just relax. There are fabulous restaurants and fresh fish. I highly recommend Vieques and La Fince for those who want a fun, low-maintenance vacation!
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Vieques' most beautiful rustic getaway and original eco-tourism destination since 1995....A rare taste of the Caribbean -- the way it used to be, quiet, natural & affordable. Perfect for groups of two to thirty, workshops, family reunions, or romantic getaways for just the two of you. Anyone who likes off the beaten track and wants to experience the Caribbean the way it was meant to be: quiet, natural and affordable. Salt water pool, outdoor showers, hammocks, views and breezes. La Finca is a cluster of handmade houses -- our large wooden main house, Casa Grande, alone can sleep 18-22, but we also have two family size cabanas and two smaller casitas, all on 3 acres of fruit trees & palms, on the off-beat island of Vieques, seven miles from Puerto Rico's eastern shore; a 25 minute flight and a world away from San Juan....We're up in the hills, with beautiful views and tradewinds, three miles away from the bustle of town...Talk about getting away! We're not a hotel, or a b&b ... The finca is our family's own private "finca" that we love to share with like-minded eco travelers -- folks who like things as natural and simple as possible. Our towels don't match, our showers are outdoors (don't worry -- they're private), the skies are jet black and studded with stars, and the property is dotted in coco palms, mangoes, starfruit, bananas, and a dozen hammocks ... Tropical summer camp, quiet and beautiful. Think Swiss Family Robinson... (Please note: Feb-March 2015 renting the whole finca means all houses/cabins with exception of Cabanita and includes 10 bedrooms with 7 baths and can sleep up to 33.) ... more less
