“Sixth Trip to Hectors”
Reviewed 12 December 2012

This was our sixth trip to Hector's. As always, the property is well maintained and you cannot get a better location, right on the ocean with a pastoral setting. The gazebo is a great place to spend early mornings with coffee, catching up on emails, or reading. If you have travelledn in the caribbean, the rates are a good deal as well.

My wife and I stayed at Hector's for our one year anniversary in November 2012. Hector has really opened up a lovely business on his property by allowing visitors to stay in his guest houses. There are only three rooms to rent on this estate so if you're interested in staying here then you'll need to book well in advance.

Hector and his wife live on the property in one home where as the other two are where guests stay. One house is split in half to accommodate two groups of guests and the other two story house accommodates a third couple on it's second floor giving a tad more privacy. The rooms have mini kitchens including plates, silverware, microwave and a mini-fridge for any food you bring in. The rooms also have brand new AC's in case you get warm. I personally enjoyed letting the ocean breeze flow through the shuttered windows to keep me cool.

The grounds here are extremely well kept and give a lovely unobstructed view of the stars when it's night time. There's a swimming pool and hot tub located in the center of the estate and a large open gazebo area for eating or enjoying some shade. The beach is accessible through the fence where the horses are kept however it's mostly coral and rock so it's not the swimming kind of beach but more like the shell gathering kind. Regardless, it's beautiful and I recommend taking a walk down it.

The whole idea of staying at a place like Hector's by the Sea is to relax. There are no TV's or phones in any of the rooms, and room and towel service are by request only. At night there are no lights outside so as to not disrupt the mood for stargazing. This includes the pool and hottub which will also be in the dark. Hector also supplies Hammocks and beach chairs outside each room which was my favorite part.

Overall I loved staying here and will definitely be coming back. A fair word of caution is how to find the property. You will absolutely need a rental vehicle that can take some light off-roading to get to Hector's gate. When I say it's secluded, it's secluded. A jeep is always the most recommended form of rental when visiting Vieques anyway so if you've already done that then you'll be fine. When you finally find it, you'll be greeted by Hector's gate which will read: "Relax. Replenish. Rejuvenate." and that's exactly what you're here to do.

Happy travels, enjoy!

Room Tip: The second story room known as "The Mango" is ideal for honeymooners because it's more...

We had one of the most memorable experiences at Hector's on Vieques Island the fall of 2009. We are typically folks that enjoy staying at your typical big name resort, but decided to keep it simple, immerse ourselves in the local way of life and completely get away from civilization for this trip to Vieques. And we're sure glad we did! Not often do we find the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a place that has remained so untouched by the grasp of tourism and the commercialization that comes along with it.

There are 3 small residences on Hector's property near Esperanza village. We stayed in the smallest detached casita which was perfect for the couple seeking a romantic getaway. I believe it was called the Mango casita. The grounds are lush and beautiful with several horses and other friendly animals freely roaming the property (don't worry, they keep their distance). There's a pool and jacuzzi on the property and it is situated directly on the beach. We walked about 1-2 miles west along the shoreline and found a black sand beach. You can walk miles and miles along the gorgeous stretch of beach and not run into anyone else. The beach around Hector's is as private as it gets.

Hector was there during our visit and was so generous and hospitable. He made us refreshing tropical drinks with Puerto Rican rum - delicious! He even invited us into his home to chat and watch some of the football game that was playing that Monday night. The payment transaction process was simple. I recall sending a check for the 1st nights visit. And paying with another check at the end of our visit for the remaining balance.

In 2009 when we visited, there were only about 1 or 2 main roads on Vieques Island that were paved. We highly recommend renting a jeep as there will be a lot of off-roading involved if you intend to explore the island. Esperanza village is only about a mile away with a few local restaurants and convenience store.

We found a secluded getaway for two. Hector’s by the Sea is exactly what we were looking for. There are only three rooms available so it makes this the perfect getaway. Hector and Mary made us feel welcome immediately. The grounds and beautiful view were breathtaking. There was also a hot tub and pool, but we spent our time either in our cabin or on the beach. The room was lovely and the bed so comfortable, being able to hear the water put us right to sleep at night. Our room was about $120.00 if I remember correctly.

We stayed at Hectors Aug 9-11,2012 after researching it here on Trip Advisor we were not disappointed. It was not a 5 star resort ,but it was a very nice and unique place to staywith a beautiful view of the ocean. As we pulled up the driveway we were thankful for our Jeep and not sure we were headed to the right area but we came to a gated area and let ourselves in as we saw the horses out wandering the property.Mary came and greeted us and showed us the property, we had a little fridge that was nice to keep drinks cold, they had beach chairs,a cooler and beach towels that you could use during your stay which was very convenient. In the evening we came back to the pool and jacuzzi that they heat up at night so you can sit out and relax. Only problem is they cannot accomodate more than 4 people in a room so if we go back with our family were out of luck!

Thanks to all of you who gave a thorough review of this place. Your reviews helped us pick the BEST place to stay in Vieques. The moment we drove down the rugged road to Hector's gate, we already knew two nights wasn't going to be enough. As soon as I got out of our car, I couldn't stop smiling. The place was just amazing! Living in New Jersey, the complete seclusion of this place from everything was perfect! The fact that there was only three bungalows to accomodate (the most three couples at a time) made it even better! The grounds was simple, open and BEAUTIFUL! Oh, and did I mention your view is the ocean?! The photos supplied here on Tripadvisor are great, but actually being there can't compare. Owner's Mary and Hector are one of the nicest, welcoming people you'll ever meet. We had a great time chatting with them one night at the gazebo over drinks, and it felt like we knew them for a long time. Just such a sweet couple! They even arranged for a private ride for us once we got back to the mainland. There's tons of wonderful things to say about Hector's. When we return, we'll definitely stay longer. Vieques Island was an altogether an unforgettable experience! Choosing Hector's for our stay made it even more special.

Room Tip: The Mango Room is more private in a sense that it's a separated bungalow, but stay in the other...

Me and my boyfriend just got back from PR and can't stop talking about our vacation. We both agree that if we had it to do all over again theres only 2 things we would have changed, we would have stayed in Vieques for at least 4 days instead of two and of course we would stay at Hector's. Their property is beautiful and private. Whats not to love, it's quiet, beautiful, theres a pool, a hot tub, beach, and a very cute and comfortable room and it is walking distance to the restraunts. Mary and her husband were very very sweet and informable. I cut my ankle on a rock and Mary was sweet enough to Dr it up, you don't get that at a resort. We walked about ten min to black sand beach from Hector's it was fun and super cool to see. The other regret was renting a scoooter.....don't rent a scooter, bad idea, the roads are in bad condition and you will never make it to the beautiful remote beaches such as navio and media luna! You can rent a Jeep for about the same price as a scooter.
