“Best lodging on our PR vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2013

Paradise. Pristine, secluded beaches, including cliffs, cochina, tidal pools, and white and also black sand beaches within short strolls (wear water shoes or good sandals). Cute lodging. Hot tub and swimming pool. Very short drive to the Malecon strip in Esperanza, and bio bay tours, and easy access to Isabelle II and other places on Vieques. Hector and Mary were super nice. Our only regret is that we should have stayed longer at Hector's. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

We just got back from our two night stay at Hector's, and it was amazing. We were looking for a place out of the ordinary, where we could relax and just enjoy three days of full relaxation. As soon as we got there we were welcomed by Mary who walked us around the property and gave us all the info we needed to get around the island. I was particularly impressed that they provided beach towels, a cooler, and beach chairs for us to take during the day for the duration of our stay (pretty neat if you want ro avoid having to carry heavy stuff on the ferry). The rooms are very well decorated and extremely clean (I'm very picky when it comes to cleanliness!). We also had a tiny cooler in our room, and a small microwave in case we wanted to bring some food back or chill a bottle of wine to have in the afternoons. This place is gorgeous, fantastic ocean views, lovely breeze flowing almost constantly, wild horses grazing the property, and great hospitality. We are definitely looking forward to stay at Hector's in the future.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in March 2012. Being from "out in the country", we enjoyed the peace and quiet (and the horses). The 1 bedroom was small, but fine for us, as we spent a lot of time exploring the island. Couldn't have asked for a more accommodating host and hostess. We wouldn't dare stay anywhere else!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Hector's by the Sea for five nights in the beginning of April after a friend recommended it. I cannot say enough good things about this place. In fact this is my first tripadvisor review, I felt so strongly about our stay that I felt it needed to be done! It is an amazing and secluded property with three casitas that give you a lot of privacy and the most stunning view. Hector and Mary were gracious hosts and provided us with towels, beach chairs, great advice about the island and tropical drinks :). We felt very welcome while still maintaining a sense of privacy. We stayed in Casita 1 which was perfect for a couple and the room comes with a mini fridge, coffee maker, utensils and a great porch and hammock. The pool and hot tub were spotless and we loved sitting at the bar area. I would recommend this place to any couple looking for a great beach vacation. Of note, you need to rent a car for the island.

My wife and I needed a get away and she found Hector's. This place was just what we were looking for. It was right on ocean so we had a great view and of course a nice breeze. We stayed in the duplex room with windows facing the ocean. We loved the hammock on the poarch, great for reading a book, sleeping, and eating a mango(or two). Its close to town, easy access to food, and kind of your own private beach. The beach however is not for swimming. At low tide however the tide pools are fun to explore. We saw a bunch of smaller fish and shell creatures. Hector and Mary were great. We had great conversations with them and at the same time felt like we were still in our own little place. I would go back there in a second for another get away.

We just returned from a wonderful honeymoon stay at Hector's. It was a fantastic place to return to after a busy day in town/at the beaches - we loved being able to just relax with only the sounds of the ocean and birds around us. Hector and Mary were very laid-back hosts - they gave us our space, but also were happy to make us a cocktail with fresh coconut milk from their trees and sit and chat. The horses were beautiful and their cat Tuco was a sweetie. We would love to return someday soon!

The sweet owner/hostess Mary welcomed us and gave us the informational tour of her (and husband Hector's) lovely property where they live and offer guesthouse accommodations. They offer one small room that stands upstairs like a crow's nest, and 2 large rooms that are housed together duplex-style. The two large rooms mirror each other with very spacious room for 2 double beds with soft cotton coverlets; plenty of closet space furnished with cooler and beach towels; a small simple kitchenette with dorm fridge, microwave, and coffee maker; bath with nice shower. The louvered windows allowed the breeze to flow through and the ocean breakers to be heard, and they could also be closed for using the AC.
My daughter loved lounging in the hammock on the small front porch while reading. I enjoyed the hot tub and crystal-clear pool, not to mention walking along the rocky beach combing for pieces of coral, sponges, and shells. The beach here is more for admiring than for swimming; but we found plenty of amazing swimming beaches on the island. Beach chairs are provided; but the only wish I could add would be for snorkel equipment to borrow or rent as a convenience.
We had Verizon voice and text connectivity the entire time, and I was happy to be without TV and internet for awhile; but my daughters went next door to try to get connected. They said service was too slow for their apps, etc; but we found service in town.
My older teenagers loved it but there are some hazards for youngsters, like the pool, hot-tub, and horses ... all of which are openly accessible.
Horses can be seen all around the property but they were never roaming completely free while we were there, even though Mary warned us she has a friendly one who has learned to open the gate. While the property and stay were tranquil, the drive in is anything but ... we got good use out of our jeep on the short but well-rutted entry, which basically is a right hook around Hacienda Tamarindo, as if you are driving around back to the staff entrance.
Both the Hacienda Tamarindo and Inn on the Blue Horizon are just a stone's throw from Hector's and we enjoyed walking over for breakfast at either. You pretty much need a car to get around the rest of the island; although it would be nice to have alternatives to everyone having to rent a car of their own ... I did see several of the locals trotting along on horses, but they didn't have to carry luggage.
*** Don't forget that Mary requests CHECK OR CASH to pay your balance. I didn't bring my checkbook, but luckily had the cash. ENJOY !
