“Safe, clean, and beautiful with only a few small quirks”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

We stayed in Casita #1 (Mango Casita) for 6 nights December 2013-January 2014. We felt very safe and secure at Hector's. The hammock on the balcony and views of pasture and ocean were divine. The road to Hector's is very rutted and was a challenge to find in the dark on our first night. A jeep or 4WD is an absolute must if you stay here. Its location is perfect for exploring the island.

We rarely saw the other guests or Hector during our stay, so it felt very private. We even had the hot tub to ourselves every night before bed. There is a lovely ocean view at the edge of the property and if you are feeling adventurous, you can scramble down the rocks to the narrow beach below and walk a good distance. Hector's three horses roam the property during the day and are friendly.

Casita #1 was very basic, but clean and comfortable. Linens are changed every 3-4 days, depending on the length of your stay. It was nice to have a small refrigerator for drinks and the option of an air conditioner at night. The provided beach chairs, beach towels, drying rack, flashlight, and small cooler were nice touches. A previous reviewer already mentioned the only real "downsides" to the property: #1: The music from the Malecon carries across the ocean to Hector's and plays late into the night, so it is not quite as peaceful and quiet as you might expect. #2: The clear slats on the glass door do not allow for any privacy, but you can hang a towel/sarong over the door to correct this. #3: The hot water in Casita #1 is very temperamental/sporadic.

We will stay at Hector's again if we return to Vieques in the future and will recommend it to friends.

Room Tip: Casita #1 is the most private room and has a private balcony with hammock and ocean views

Good quiet retreat it is. Hosts are nice. Horses are adorable. Rooms are spacious and clean. Went to have breakfast at Blue Horizon - they had very good food with extremely slow service....

The bad parts: No sign to indicate location of the B&B on the main road. No directions from the host (the entrance is at km 4.5 in case you decide to stay here). The approach road has deep deep ruts. The gate needs to be opened and closed each time you enter the property, so you have to get out of the car and dirty your hands - rain or shine. Bathroom is not enclosed; the walls are not up to ceiling so it is as if there is a solid partition between your bedroom and the bathroom. Water pressure was miserable, did not get hot water during our two day stay. No blinds or curtains on any doors or windows. The front door has translucent panes that open up to get air in - but since these panes do not provide privacy. At night I am sure that whatever you do is visible from the outside. Music from Blue Horizon may be a plus or a minus when you are trying to sleep (depending on your personality). At some point in spite of the mosquito screens, small bug/mosquito got into our room and bit me on the face, ended up with bumps on face and neck in the morning to complete the experience.

We recently had a family get together with our adult children at Hector's and Mary's and it could not have been more perfect. We had all three guest rooms which made our stay like a private retreat. Hector and Mary have a beautiful pavilion overlooking the sea - this was our family headquarters. A great place for hanging out playing games, reading or just staring out at the beautiful sea. Their horses roamed the grounds and provided added character to our surroundings. We hiked along the beach and were met by wild horses along our trek. i will never forget looking up on this isolated stretch of beach and seeing three wild horses running along the shore!
Mary and Hector could not have been more inviting and we loved having them join us for our daughter's birthday celebration in the "club house". Hector brought fresh coconuts and made us drinks with the coconut milk!
Thanks Mary and Hector for making our family trip so memorable!

My fiance and I loved staying with Mary & Hector at Hector's by the sea. The property is just down the road from Hacienda Tamarindo, closer to the ocean and much more private. The grounds were beautiful and the room was comfortable and well appointed. Hector and Mary's horses roamed the property and sometimes greeted us the morning and we enjoyed drinking coffee on our porch and watching the sunset.

The location is just a short drive (a few minutes) to Esperanza where all of the action is. Aside from providing great accommodations, Hector & Mary were wonderful hosts, checking in on us, making great recommendations for restaurants and activities on the island, and even sharing a drink with us on the pavilion that they built for their own son's wedding. They all of this without making us feel like we lacked privacy. All in all this was a magnificent stay!

I stayed at Hector's by The Sea for the second time in five years. Absolutely beautiful views of the ocean coupled with gorgeous mountain views and horses grazing. Mary and Hector are so gracious always providing helpful advice for spectacular restaurants, activities such as snorkling, kayaking or visiting the unbelievable Bio bay! In addition, Mary and Hector keep the rooms emaculate, and if their is anyway then can help you, they are there in a heart beat, with a gracious smile and abundance of hospitality! The beaches are like nothing else, with many to pick from depending on your pleasure; Sunbay Beach, Red beach, Blue beach are all wonderful! All of them have beautiful views, calm water, some are better for snorkling, where others are preferred for their intimacy! I rented a jeep with the help of Mary and Hector and they pointed me to some wonderful restaurants in the town of Esperanza just few minutes away. You have to go to Duffy's bar and grill and try their Black Angus burger!! Make sure you pick a good seat so you can gaze at the beautiful bay right across the road. If you want to relax by the pool or jump into a jacuzzi with a glass of wine, all you have to do is walk twenty feet from your room! The rooms are clean and spacious. They have a fridgerator, coffee pots, and there is the Green store near by, if you want to buy a few things for yourself for the mornings. Vieques is just the place for a relaxing, serene, wonderful experience with a lot to offer. Mary and Hector are wonderfully pleasant hosts with tremendous knowledge of the island and will always steer you in the right place. This is one place you need to check out and see for yourself!

My husband and I stayed at Hector's this past July 2013. Our stay was amazing. The property was too beautiful for words. Waking up every morning to the sound of the sea and watching the horses run through the fields was breathtaking. Hector and Mary are very gracious hosts and made out stay even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend staying at Hector's to anyone visiting Vieques, or planning a trip to Puerto Rico.

This is my first time doing a review on tripadvisor. Our stay at Hectors was an absolutely dream come true for me. We have always traveled in the mountain settings so this was my first trip to the ocean and warm beaches. This far exceeded my expectations. I searched for months on making the perfect vacation for my husband and me. I relied on comments from trip advisor to help me determine where to go and stay. I see now why Hector's by the Sea receives such excellent comments. Mary and Hector are the best!!! Everything went smoothly and they did a great job helping us navigate the area and making us feel at home. If you want to stay at a place that is NON touristy this is it. The stay was quiet and relaxing. We woke up each morning to the sound of the ocean waves, made our coffee and headed to the ocean side with the soft winds keeping us cool. Also if you luv horses, as I do, you will luv this place. Many horses run free around the island, Hector has some horses on the property as well. best of all the Esperanza Riding Company is actually right next to Hector's so when we booked our riding trip (on the beach) we walked just a few feet to meet our horses and our guide Lori-who was wonderful as well. We also booked a sailing/snorkeling trip with Marauders who upgraded our boat to the Vieques Classic Charter which we rode on the Shalamar with captain Sebastian Watt. These people were so accommodating and friendly it was almost too good to be true. They were patient with us being snorkeling beginners and I got a bit sea sick and they were so good about helping me through it. We also went to the bio bay with Abe's and had a great time with them as well. Our guide was so fun and made the trip very memorable. I can't say one bad thing about our week in Vieques. Just remember the island is peaceful, calm and laid back. There are no fast food joints, no tourist traps and no shopping malls. So truly if you want relaxation in a peaceful quiet environment Hector's by the Sea is your place. The rooms are clean and spacious. There is a fridge, coffee pot and microwave so we purchased supplies and the Green Store which saved us a lot of money. There are however some great places to eat within walking distance of our villa. We took a small plane to the island and then took a cab to Hectors with renting a car the next day. Next time I think we will take the ferry to save money (which we can stay a couple more days). You really could get by without renting a car as if you like to walk you could do fine. But it is fun exploring the island which is really easy to navigate once you get you main roads down. I could go on forever but to sum it up-I will be back.
