If there was one place in Vieques that combines peace, relaxation, comfort—yet with proximity to almost everything of note on Vieques—it would be Hector's.
- Pool, hot tub, short stroll to (an essentially private) beach
- Quiet, and only a 5 minute drive to Esperanza
- Clean, comfortable, room; kitchenette; small dining area
- The driveway has been washed out several times and has extremely deep ruts. It’s easily (albeit slowly) navigated with a Jeep or other high-carriage car; I wouldn't try it in a sedan.
- No Wifi
Situated on a large piece of property directly on the water, but with plenty of space to stroll around, Hector's has three generous bungalow type lodges, two put together as a duplex and the third (the one my wife and I stayed in) on the second floor of a utility building (The Mango, Casita 1 on their website).
The grounds include a pristine in-ground pool, a raised hot-tub with a view of the ocean, plenty of space to walk or stroll, a large cabana style party/dining building that is open for use by guests (never used as a commercial bar, as far as we could tell), and a short path down to a narrow beach perfect for beachcombing (though not swimming). Beach towels, beach chairs, and a cooler are provided for guest use.
Our room “The Mango” had a comfortable queen bed, a dresser, a bistro table with two chairs and matching place settings with utensils, a kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator, and a large bathroom with shower. It was spotless and had a good amount of room for two adults to move around comfortably. There was a deck with two comfortable chairs and a hammock (note, however, it receives a lot of sun). There's enough parking for a dozen cars or more (since you more or less park in a corner of the enormous yard). There is no TV or WiFi (we found we didn’t need either). Hector’s 3 horses live on the premises, sometimes in their paddock, and sometimes freely roaming the grounds (often eating up the fruit dropped from the trees overnight by our stairs).
Hector's is just a mile away from Esperanza, so you can reach the action in under five minutes. If horseback riding is of interest, Hector's shares a fence-line with Esperanza Riding Company (you can slip through the fence to get to it). Isabella Segunda and the airport are a short drive away.
Hector and his wife Mary live on the premises but were rarely seen, though Hector was easily accessible for questions at several different times during the day. No meals are served (but you can make most anything in the kitchenette). We’d stay here again in a heartbeat as our #1 preference on the island.
