Hector's by the Sea
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 April 2009

We'd just like to add our agreement with all that's been said about the greatness of Hector's-by-the-Sea. The setting on undeveloped open spaced on a short cliff above the sea is magnificent. Mary and Hector are perfect the hosts, so much so that we felt like part of their family after a few days. The casitas are well-appointed, airy, and bright, and the value is excellent.....these days you'd probably have to go deep into rural Asia to match it. Being animal people, we especially liked interacting with Hector and Mary's small managerie, consisting of 4 small horses, two cats, and a parrot with an incredible and accurately rendered repertoire of songs, words, and sounds.

Fortunately, an experience like Vieques or Hector's won't necessily appeal to everyone, especially the highly social, all-inclusive resort or cruising crowd. It's a perfect place for solitude and long walks on classic palm-lined white sand beaches, most of which were deserted, or nearly so.

This was my wife's first trip to PR and Vieques, and though I have travelled to PR on numerous occassions, it was my first trip to Vieques. Hector's by the Sea is quite possibly one of the best places we have stayed at in the Carribbean for the price per night. In the beginning we felt the price may have been just a tad bit much, however you begin not to think about it the second you reach the property. First off, before I go into the features of the property, their website is actually well put together, very informative, and great pictures to compliment. Second, and quite possibly the most important, Mary maintains GREAT communication through email in terms of booking, having questions, and helping you out in whatever way they can. I must have contacted her at least 10 times on different occassions, and each time, she replied promptly and always with a solution.
Now with the property: even though we got ripped off by a publico driver in dropping us off "close" to the property, Hector was extremely helpful in getting our bags from the Hacienda Tamarindo (hotel next to them) and was visibly upset with that publico driver which at first we thought nothing of the situation but was happy to see that he cared for our situation. Anyways, the property is absolutely immaculate with green fields, a blue pool and a bubbling jaccuzi. Though friendly horses roam the property it was amazing to see how beautifully they have upkept the area. Any view from the property is breathtaking within itself, but when you can see and hear the ocean from your casita while in bed (we stayed in the Vistamar) it is truly an unbelievable experience.
The casita itself was fanatastic in which it came with two beds, a small kitchenette (no stove, but a microwave, sink, fridge), a nice sized bathroom with standing shower (nice water pressure and fixtures), and everything was nicely decorated with your own hammock in the front. They even had extra towels and a cooler for you to take to the beach!
We feel that the best experiences come from the smallest details, and Hector and Mary have definitely accomplished that. It was a great and relaxing place to stay and we foresee many returning trips to Hector's by the Sea. We cannot thank them enough for their kind hospitality and they truly made our trip a memorable one!

Hector and Mary have a little slice of heaven on Vieques and have decided to share it with the folks who stay. It's a really nice spot--not completely anonymous if you are the type of person who never wants to speak to anyone else, but plenty isolated and very safe. The Mango is probably the best choice for romantic getaways, as the other two casitas share a wall (fairly soundproof but you do know others are nearby). You are secluded on this property from the noise of the malecon in Esperanza, but are just a walk across the field from the Inn on the Blue Horizon if you need the comforts of a bar or dinner within very close walking distance (and town is only 15 minutes further by foot). However, with your own porch, hammock and kitchenette, there isn't much reason to leave. The accommodations are very comfortable--comfy beds, big tiled shower, plenty of closet space, wine openers, coffee maker. The best beach chairs ever, beach towels, and even a mini cooler so you can pack a lunch or beer for an evening cocktail at the beach. All of the amenities just make it so relaxing to stay at Hector's...your biggest choice will be which beach to try that day. And Mary and Hector could not be nicer. They are friendly and happy to help if you'd like, but will also leave you to your own vacation. Our flight left late in the day and they let us hang out as long as possible, cleaning our casita last to accommodate us, and then drove us to the airport!

This was our third, week long trip to Hector's by the Sea, but our first posting to tripadvisor. The pastoral setting is unparalleled in the Caribbean and the property enjoys both sunrise and sunset views. There is a new gazebo on the Esperanza side of the property and we made a lot of use of this new facility. The pool, spa, and rooms were as great as ever and the hosts - Mary and Hector were accomodating and assisted us with both restaurant and car rental reservations. The east end of Sun Bay was our favorite beach, with plenty of sun, shade and water and an incredible view of the bay with Monte Pirata in the background.

All the 5 star reviews were right: Hector's By The Sea is a little slice of heaven. The property is open and beautiful...the ocean view is stunning. If you're looking for a spot to get away from your hectic lifestyle--this is it. The casita we stayed at--The Coqui--was very comfortable and immaculately clean! Hector is the nicest guy and he will give you pointers about anything and everything you need to know. I suggest that you talk to him ahead of time about how to get to and around Vieques. We are already planning on doing a family reunion here in the future, and renting the entire place!!!
One word of advice--rent a jeep or an all-wheel drive to get to Hector's. Even when the dirt road is just a short way from the main road, it'll be pretty bumpy and you will need a high-clearance vehicle to avoid damaging something like a sedan. PLUS, to get to the best beaches in the island, you will need that kind of vehicle too (but don't be scared, because the dirt roads we took were pretty easy ones. Graveled.)
Final inputs:
--If you need a TV, phone, or room service Hector's is not for you. Go next door to Blue Inn on the Horizon which is a gorgeous property as well.
--On Restaurants: if you're looking for real puertorrican food, skip the town of Esperanza altogether and go to the town of Isabel II. All the restaurants in Esperanza are expensive--$25 a plate, $8 a drink are the average. We went to Trade Winds and El Quenepo and they were very much tailored towards tourists...which means that they will give you some Caribbean / Asian fusion mix that has nothing to do with the island food. If you, on the other hand, are not so sure you want to venture and try local food, then stay in Esperanza (but be ready to pay paradise prices). Enough said.
--On Beaches: We skipped the public beach Sun Bay and went to Red Beach (Playa Caracas) instead. Fabulous choice. It has a few little cabanas to be in the shade if you're sun-shy and crystal clear waters. There are no bathrooms or any other services here, so if you need that kind of services available, stay at Sun Bay.

Vieques was fabulous! Have fun!!!

My wife and i were a bit scared at first as the taxi took us down the dirt road... wondering if all the reviews were true... once in we were indeed happy... the view from the property was amazing.. the ocean was our back yard.. Mary & Hector were both very friendly and great.. Mary gave us maps and great directions around the island..and a few pointers on where to visit...

Once night fell it was so relaxing you could fall asleep on your porch hammock listening to the waves and watching the stars..

It was sad when we left... all the others places we stayed during our visit to PR were measured up against Hector's... and none of them came close... we were spoiled... and hope to be back again...

Thanks Mary & Hector

AHHHH.... Hector's By The Sea. Our one regret is that we didnt stay longer. We had our wedding in PR, then had been bouncing around the mainland for our honeymoon, and we feel our honeymoon really didnt begin until we got to Vieques and Hector's by the Sea! There is such a peaceful feeling and the view is beyond amazing. Hector and Mary are a hot couple! Such nice normal people who enjoy sharing their gorgeous property with others. It's clean, simple, and has all the necessities including beach chairs, and a nice lil cooler. Hector and Mary let us use the stuff all day even after checkout since we decided to take a later ferry. If you like peace, amazing sunsets, romance, and clean relaxation, go to Hector's!
