“Such a wonderful experience!”
Reviewed 29 April 2009

My friend and I just returned from a week long Puerto Rico trip. We spent two nights in Vieques at Hector's by the Sea. A fantastic experience, my only regret is that we did not spend more time there.

Hector and Mary are the owners and operators. They have done a wonderful job opening a quiet, private, simple guest house on one of the planet's most beautiful beaches. The views are unparalleled!

Our casita / cottage had everything we needed. Two beds, ample bathroom, fridge, coffeemaker, etc. No TV in room, but you're not in Vieques to watch TV, hopefully.

Fresh mangos dropping off trees (watch out, you'll have to race the horses for them!) make a great morning or evening snack. The pool and hot tub are perfect for night time stargazing (which is remarkable, by the way).

Hector and Mary, my thanks to you both.

My husband and I honeymooned on Vieques -- our second trip to the island. It was an even more perfect vacation than our first trip, mainly due to Mary and Hector. Their place is amazing -- spectacular views!! If the island beaches weren't so inviting we could have easily spent entire days on our balcony overlooking the ocean. Mary and Hector are perfect hosts -- friendly and helpful without being intrusive. We just couldn't recommend it highly enough.

We'd just like to add our agreement with all that's been said about the greatness of Hector's-by-the-Sea. The setting on undeveloped open spaced on a short cliff above the sea is magnificent. Mary and Hector are perfect the hosts, so much so that we felt like part of their family after a few days. The casitas are well-appointed, airy, and bright, and the value is excellent.....these days you'd probably have to go deep into rural Asia to match it. Being animal people, we especially liked interacting with Hector and Mary's small managerie, consisting of 4 small horses, two cats, and a parrot with an incredible and accurately rendered repertoire of songs, words, and sounds.

Fortunately, an experience like Vieques or Hector's won't necessily appeal to everyone, especially the highly social, all-inclusive resort or cruising crowd. It's a perfect place for solitude and long walks on classic palm-lined white sand beaches, most of which were deserted, or nearly so.

My husband and I just had a wonderful week at Hector's and could not imagine staying anywhere else on Vieques. The location is perfect, not in the noisy town of Esperanza yet not far from the conveniences offered there. The views from Hector's were wonderful at anytime of day but sunsets relaxing on the deck of the Mango, our casita, were heavenly. Mary and Hector were the perfect hosts, available and knowledgeable when needed yet affording us privacy at other times. Mary made all the arrangements for our rental car which was waiting for us at the casita and the loaner beach towels, cooler and beach chairs were a very nice touch. Our room was clean, comfortable and well stocked which allowed us to have breakfast and happy hour there each day. We really did not see any other accomodations at any price where we would have rather been than at Hector's by the Sea. Our next trip to Vieques will be timed around availability there! Thanks again to Mary and Hector for sharing their wonderful place with us. Penny and Bill, Conifer,CO

This was my wife's first trip to PR and Vieques, and though I have travelled to PR on numerous occassions, it was my first trip to Vieques. Hector's by the Sea is quite possibly one of the best places we have stayed at in the Carribbean for the price per night. In the beginning we felt the price may have been just a tad bit much, however you begin not to think about it the second you reach the property. First off, before I go into the features of the property, their website is actually well put together, very informative, and great pictures to compliment. Second, and quite possibly the most important, Mary maintains GREAT communication through email in terms of booking, having questions, and helping you out in whatever way they can. I must have contacted her at least 10 times on different occassions, and each time, she replied promptly and always with a solution.
Now with the property: even though we got ripped off by a publico driver in dropping us off "close" to the property, Hector was extremely helpful in getting our bags from the Hacienda Tamarindo (hotel next to them) and was visibly upset with that publico driver which at first we thought nothing of the situation but was happy to see that he cared for our situation. Anyways, the property is absolutely immaculate with green fields, a blue pool and a bubbling jaccuzi. Though friendly horses roam the property it was amazing to see how beautifully they have upkept the area. Any view from the property is breathtaking within itself, but when you can see and hear the ocean from your casita while in bed (we stayed in the Vistamar) it is truly an unbelievable experience.
The casita itself was fanatastic in which it came with two beds, a small kitchenette (no stove, but a microwave, sink, fridge), a nice sized bathroom with standing shower (nice water pressure and fixtures), and everything was nicely decorated with your own hammock in the front. They even had extra towels and a cooler for you to take to the beach!
We feel that the best experiences come from the smallest details, and Hector and Mary have definitely accomplished that. It was a great and relaxing place to stay and we foresee many returning trips to Hector's by the Sea. We cannot thank them enough for their kind hospitality and they truly made our trip a memorable one!

Hector and Mary have a little slice of heaven on Vieques and have decided to share it with the folks who stay. It's a really nice spot--not completely anonymous if you are the type of person who never wants to speak to anyone else, but plenty isolated and very safe. The Mango is probably the best choice for romantic getaways, as the other two casitas share a wall (fairly soundproof but you do know others are nearby). You are secluded on this property from the noise of the malecon in Esperanza, but are just a walk across the field from the Inn on the Blue Horizon if you need the comforts of a bar or dinner within very close walking distance (and town is only 15 minutes further by foot). However, with your own porch, hammock and kitchenette, there isn't much reason to leave. The accommodations are very comfortable--comfy beds, big tiled shower, plenty of closet space, wine openers, coffee maker. The best beach chairs ever, beach towels, and even a mini cooler so you can pack a lunch or beer for an evening cocktail at the beach. All of the amenities just make it so relaxing to stay at Hector's...your biggest choice will be which beach to try that day. And Mary and Hector could not be nicer. They are friendly and happy to help if you'd like, but will also leave you to your own vacation. Our flight left late in the day and they let us hang out as long as possible, cleaning our casita last to accommodate us, and then drove us to the airport!

This was our third, week long trip to Hector's by the Sea, but our first posting to tripadvisor. The pastoral setting is unparalleled in the Caribbean and the property enjoys both sunrise and sunset views. There is a new gazebo on the Esperanza side of the property and we made a lot of use of this new facility. The pool, spa, and rooms were as great as ever and the hosts - Mary and Hector were accomodating and assisted us with both restaurant and car rental reservations. The east end of Sun Bay was our favorite beach, with plenty of sun, shade and water and an incredible view of the bay with Monte Pirata in the background.
