“At home away from home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

Loved our time at Casa La Lanchita! Doug and Marikay made us feel right at home. The location was away from the bustle, while still being in walking distance to anything we needed. This was exactly what we needed for our family trip with our 6 month old daughter! So glad we chose La Lanchita!

Casa La Lanchita is perfect for our family of four and the kind of travelers we are. We like to be as independent as possible and the owners of this beautiful beach-front property make that as easy as can be. There are jeeps you can rent (a necessity to get to the best beaches in the nature preserve area), and all manner of convenience to borrow free of charge: boogie boards, coolers, beach towels -- even a lending library. Having a kitchen allowed us to save lots of money cooking our own dinners. The owners gave us tons of useful info about the island, geared to our particular interests, but otherwise left us alone -- just how we like it. If you are looking for the type of place with daily maid service and mints on the pillow, this isn't it. But if you want to pretend you actually live in paradise, look no further!

Room Tip: Each room is different; talk to the owner about which would be best for you.

We loved Casa La Lanchita. The views are to die for: tides, horizon, skies, a distant island. Doug and Marikay were personable and generous. The room: spacious, refreshing, clean and pleasant. The kids loved the pool and even made a friend there. A plus: rental car opportunity that we greatly appreciated.

We stayed for three nights after being at El Conquistador on PR. It was exactly what we had hoped for... Clean, attractive, right on the beach with the sound of waves crashing all night long...perfect! The pool area is very nice and we loved sitting on the balcony in front of our room for cocktails. Our room was overlooking the pool on the 2nd floor... Room 7 I think. We didn't use the kitchen but the showers were hot and the screens were perfect so we could leave the windows open all night. Doug and marikay were helpful with restaurant recommendations and they provided all the beach gear we needed...chairs, cooler, noodles, snorkel gear. Doug picked us up at the ferry right after we docked.

We ate at Mama Songas the first night - good food, pleasant location, fast service. Second night was at Billi's in Esperanza - great food, pleasant location.

We went to red, blue and secret beaches - blue and secret are perfect white sand, turquoise water, a few trees to hide from the sun. Red has a few cabanas a bit back from the beach.

Snorkeling at red on the left side has lots of sea plants and corals but not too many fish. Blue beach has more fish if you're brave and go around the point on the left, but this isn't for beginners. The water is 4-10 feet deep and there are LOTS of sea urchins with very long spikes so you have to move to a deep spot to clear your mask. It's tricky. Snorkeling at secret beach we didn't think was as good. Snorkeling at the pier was different. Lots of fish along the jetty, and schools of fish along the pier in very very deep water. It was cool. We even saw a turtle.

We spent 3 wonderful weeks at Casa La Lanchita, in our favourite suite, the Cabana. Everything about this hotel is great - the view, the accommodations, the location, the other guests, the amenities - and of course, Doug and Marikay who always go the extra mile to ensure that our holiday is delightful and stress-free. And what a nice break from an awful winter! Thanks so much for another amazing holiday!

Room Tip: Every room is great, as they all look out onto the Atlantic Ocean.

Timely and friendly pickup/drop off at Ferry courtesy of Doug. Easy check in/out. Helpful, informative and knowledgeable advice on where to eat, stores, shops, places to see and beaches to visit. Lots of beach items available for use(complimentary), such as snorkel gear, beach towels, beach chairs, coolers, boogie boards, kids beach toys, a library of books, puzzles & games to borrow. Complimentary laundry room. Use of a Jeep(assigned to you alone), for an extra daily fee that is cheaper than a rental agency.

The hotel itself is right on the Ocean facing north with Puerto Rico & Culebra visible in the distance. Easy access to the beach below with snorkeling and even surfing right outside your window. If you are lucky you might see whales, marlins and turtles from the balcony.

There are two pools that are kept fairly warm. Ideal for kids and lit for night time swimming. Plenty of pool chairs for relaxing at the hotel.

Each balcony has sitting areas with tables for eating out on the balcony too or just reading or relaxing and gazing out at the ocean.

There were four of us, 2 teen boys, so we had a master bed for parents. One boy slept on the couch and the other on a portable folding bed.

The kitchen is plenty big with a full size fridge, microwave, oven and stove top with electric burners. Fully supplied with dishes and utensils, as well as various cooking pots/pans, etc. We cooked breakfast and stocked up on some groceries at the local market. This was a good way to cut some costs and save time. We were able to pack lunches and use the cooler, so we could spend an entire day at the beach. Eating out every day can be expensive on Vieques.

The water pressure and temps were very good too. Rooms are fairly dated in terms of decor and furnishings, but it's not the Hilton Resort type place. Linens are all a bit worn, but seem relatively clean. The only complaint is that the tile floor in our room was a tad dirty/gritty. Your feet get very dirty walking around for just a few minutes in the room. This was not due to us bringing in dirt. It seems like the room service did not do a good job sweeping/vacuuming/mopping the floors prior to our arrival. Still, not a big deal and it might have been an exception too. Fans in every room and plenty of breeze from the ocean. One television with Dish Network if you need that link to the states.

Wifi connection was very spotty and unreliable even though we had a router in our room. No trouble with cell phone or texting, Just not good for internet access, checking email or sending pics/files.

One of their cats is very friendly and decided to spend a couple hours hanging with our boys each day. We enjoyed her company.

We would stay here again w/out hesitation if we make it back to Vieques and it's still being run by Doug and Marikay.

Room Tip: Upper balcony rooms are best for viewing the ocean.
