“Enjoyable stay !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2014

While staying in PR for a week, we want to go to Vieques to do the Bio-bay. The ferry stops running early in the evening, so we had to have accommodations for a night. The Tropical Guest was perfect !!!! Inexpensive, basic island housing, safe and the BEST host you could ask for ! Maria and Joe were delightful and very helpful. Cheap great breakfast is served. I would recommend the Tropical Guest house! Remember, it's a guest house not a resort or hotel. So if your looking for luxury with all the amenities, don't stay here. If you want want to stay with locals and get a first hand feeling for island living, then this IS the place.

Thank you to Maria and Joe !

We had an excellent time with María & Joe. They recommended us the best restaurants, beaches and even the best NYE in Vieques.
Joe' s "french toasts" are the best!!!!
María is sweet and polite.
The prices are good for the rooms
We had our car there, so it was easy to go and back from Esperanza to Isabel and got around the beaches!! That was great! there are wild horses everywhere!

Maria and Joe are excellent and go above and beyond to make your stay wonderful. I had a very comfortable, relaxing, and joyous stay. They were very helpful with activities and beaches to visit. The location is perfect and was within walking distance to many great restaurants and bars. I highly recommend this place.

If you don't rent a car in Vieques, don't go here.

We read about this being near the Ferry Terminal (15 minutes) and decided to take it thinking Vieques should be a small enough island. Not true. Vieques has 2 distinct neighbourhoods, Isabel II and Esperanza about 15 minutes of a drive from one another. If you're a tourist, you want to stay in Esperanza. And Tropical Guest House is in Isabel II.

Transportation to and from Esperanza can get difficult, especially later in the evenings. And that's where all the beaches and bars/restaurants are.

Tropical is a decently maintained place but the rooms were very basic. No hair dryer or power sockets to speak of and very small rooms.

The staff, however, was extremely pleasant and helpful.

Overall, though, I would pick one of the guest houses on the Esperanza side for around the same price (<$100) if I were to visit Vieques again.

Thank you for staying at the Tropical Guest House.

We are actually closer to the entrance of the most beautiful beaches in the US Fish and Wildlife Reserve than if you are on the opposite side. We are a 12 minute walk from the ferry port which is especially important if you are taking a 6:00am ferry back to the mainland. We are a 5 minute walk to El Fortin Conde de Mirasol, which is the last fort built by the Spaniards. It is also home to the museum and the Vieques radio station. We are walking distance to the Plaza (or town square), the venue for Patronales, the biggest festival that Vieques hosts in July. We are minutes away on foot from many shops, bars, and restaurants, including El Yate, Cayo Blanco, Cafe Mamasonga, Mar Azul, Taverna, Zafra, Buen Provecho, Conuco, Sabores, Roy's Cafe, Coqui Fire, Biekes Bistro, Shauna's, Cafetin el Puente, and El Resuelve.

If you were in need of a hairdryer or any other amenity we would have gladly provided it. We do have hairdryers, irons, beach towels, etc, available upon request.

I hope that you enjoyed the beauty that Vieques has to offer.

This was an amazing place to stay. Joe and Maria are amazing people. They made us breakfast each morning, took the time out to chat and answer any questions we had about the island. Maria recommended the best beaches to visit, taxi cab service, and what restaurants and bars we should try out. Joe was only too happy to chat whenever I was coming and going from the hotel. The room was very nice and the appliances and amenities were in fine condition. With the weather being what it was, having air conditioning was obviously a nice touch. I would honestly go back just to spend more time with Joe and Maria. They are without a doubt, some of the nicest people with which I have ever had the pleasure of conversing. Very moderately priced and a great location right on the edge of downtown on the north side of the island (Isabel). It's a 10 minute walk to the ferry, 5 minute walk to restaurants/downtown Isabel, and a short cab ride to Esperanza. I would go back again and again, assuming I don't buy a place in Vieques myself.

Thank you Evan for this great and very informative review. Joe and I are so happy that you chose us for your first, and second, stay in Vieques. I hope it's a trend of many visits to come. Thank you for also taking the extra time to mail us a thank you card, it brought big smiles to our faces.
We truly appreciate you and the lovely lady you introduced to the beauty that is Vieques.

Joe and Maria are amazing people and host. They treated us like family and we felt at home. When we got to Vieques they picked us up at the Ferry since we didn't know where we were going. Their hospitality is beyond anyones expectations. Joe's cooking is amazing and Maria makes you feel like you have not left your home. The room was beautiful and comfortable.Looking forward to my next trip soon. They become part of your family once you meet them. Overall I love the Guest House :) Would recommended 100%

Me and my family stayed at the guest house a few weeks ago the place seriously needs a lot of improvements. The first thing that we noticed when we got there was that the office and hallway were horrible painted and not even finished, then when we finished checking in we were going up to the room and the hallway also wasn't finished being painted then when we got to the room and walked in the room guess what it was not painted completely we could see the cement around the air conditioner then the walls were kind of filtering water (I say so because the walls had the paint ripped off next to the bathroom) then when we turn on the AC it was making a really loud sound but at least it stopped after it kept going. The staff was really really friendly and very nice they were very polite and honestly is the best thing that we considered there. This place minus the staff is horrible because even the location is far from the beach...

Thanks for complimenting the staff. We do work hard to make sure our guests are comfortable and get what they need. YES, we are indeed in the process of painting. However, we try to do so when we are less occupied so as not to offend people with the smell of the paint. As far as the beaches, the nicest beaches are on the U.S. fish and wildlife reserve. The entrance is less than 10 minutes away by car and there are NO hotels on the reserve. We always do our best to give our guests a memorable stay on Vieques Island.
