Joe and Margo made us feel so welcome, even before we got there! They were helpful with advice and answered our questions about the island and activities. Joe told us a funny story about a guest who showed up with a set of golf clubs (there is no golf course on Vieques). We stayed in the small studio. it has an extra large bathroom with counter space tor making coffee and sandwiches. The room was clean and nicely decorated, no need for AC. We felt safe in the neighborhood, even walking home after midnight. There are coolers and belly boards available to take to the beach. One thing the first time traveler to Esperanza should know is that there are roosters running free all over the place and they start crowing after midnight and don't stop until morning. (this will be the same anywhere you stay in the town.) We were fine with this, but if it would bother you, get the AC and button up the windows.
Coco Loco has 3 very friendly dogs and 1 charming cat, they recognize who the guests are immediately but will bark at strangers. Just so you know.
Don't miss the breakfast sandwiches and fresh baked bread from the bakery right around the corner, get there early, yum.
If you're coming to Vieques for the first time, realize it's pretty much a DIY type vacation. You should rent a jeep if at all possible (book far ahead), but even without a vehicle, Sun Bay beach (the only beach with facilities- but is very nice and excellent snorkeling) is only about a 20 min walk. Even Esperanza harbor has good snorkeling . But if you want to have say, a mile or so of beach all to yourself, you'll need to drive (or hike for an hour or 2). We used Maritza's car rental, which we would highly recommend. They picked us up and dropped us off promptly, and didn't bother to charge us for an extra couple of hours overtime. If you need to use a publico (taxi), we highly recommend Julio's taxi service. When our bags didn't come on the same flight we did, he dropped them off later, no charge. Very nice guy, prompt and reliable.
We were a little disappointed with the Marauder sail/snorkel charter, only because the place they took us we could have just as easily gotten to by land. However, they were very nice, had good equipment, gave good tips for what to look for, and served up a tasty lunch.
Last but not least - down on the Malecon, try skipping the tourist joints once in a while, go across the street and check out the homemade pastelillos (turnovers) made by Laura at the little trailer (I think it's called "La Rana", next to the pier). She had native conch one night and native lobster another - out of this world! She also had homemade lasagna and other goodies, different menu every night. No liquor license, but no problem, just bring a six pack, her husband and his buddies will be happy to let you join in a game of dominoes. They play music on the nights the locals joint "La Nasa" isn't open, so we danced the night away to old school Salsa!
