The Garage Popular is Fort de France's newest (August 2011) and already most dynamic bar. While the place is tiny (perhaps 40 m2, including the terrasse), the atmosphere is great. The Franco-German team of the Garage Popular manages to make the place at the same time hip and a typical neighbourhood bar. Bar themes of period, style or place – including the music and cocktails which go with them – seem to change almost weekly, and especially on event weekends (basically every weekend) the bar gets very busy. You can check the programme on www.facebook.com/pages/Garage-Popular.
There is beer of course (the bar has a petrol station/garage/car decoration), but there are also wine and cocktails, including classics and always changing original creations: vodka-bordel, not only a funny name! The price for cocktails and shooters is very reasonable for Fort de France, rarely exceeding 6 euros.
Food, also car-themed, consists either of hot sandwiches with salad or of larger ham, sausage, cheese, etc. arrangements. All I have tried were very tasty and freshly prepared at the bar, Still, the Garage Popular to my mind rather is a place for drinks, and the food rather serves as a basis for a long evening. And they are indeed long evenings for Fort de France, the Garage Popular remains open until long after midnight (around 2 o'clock, I would say; the hip spirit of the place obviously forbids to write a boring fixed closing time on a mundane sign at the entrance).
Generally the Garage Popular remains open as long as there are customers having fun. It would even be open on Sundays, I have been told, if people in the city were not so terribly boring and would not spend the whole Sunday indoors.
Come on Fort de France, finally we have a bar which goes places, let's fill it 7 nights per week!
