Let me first say that I travel with work, and stay at many resorts and hotels. My new husband spends a good amount of time traveling domestically and internationally, up to 10 weeks per year. We are tough customers when it comes to hotels and resorts. For added pressure, we were in St. Lucia for our wedding and for our honeymoon :-) .

We spent a week in the Honeymoon Beachfront Concierege rooms (which, granted are a little dated, but are being updated according to the staff) and were extremely happy. Every afternoon we spent sipping champagne from our in-room mini bar, watching the sunset. The beach was great, the grounds were lush, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier.

The Pier restaurant food was very good. Unlike some other reviewers, I personally wore dress flip flops along with semi-formal dresses on 3 separate occassions, and had no issues. Bayside was casual, but in the evenings, we ate under the stars by candlelight and it was amazing. Drinks were pleantiful and a very generous pour. I liked the swim-up bar and have requested one be built at home (I'm still waiting though).

Make sure you go to the Sandals Grande and have dinner at Barefoot by the Sea. If you get there early, you can have dinner on the beach, watching the sunset. Very romantic.

And at that point, I will share some observations that I hope will help out fellow travelers...

1) The Grande-- Reminded me of a Vegas hotel. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I will say that those who want a more swinging place-- book here. For my husband the Dr... let's just say that we never went to the Regency because he was so put off by the Grande, it's faux Greecian statues, and the Corinthian columns.

2) The private candlelight dinner-- It's not so private. The ones at the Grande are spaced right next to each other. The ones at Halcyon are scattered in not-so-private locations. Literally we were 10 feet away from one of these couples at Halcyon and 15 feet at Barefoot. If you are on a budget, forego it and have dinner either at Halcyon Bayside and request a table outdoors or have dinner at the Grande Barefoot by the sea. If you are not on a budget, take that money and donate it to charity... then have dinner at Bayside or Barefoot.

3) Weddings at Sandals-- are lovely (trust me, I saw 3 of them, including one of the reviewers on this site, lol) however they are also not private. Since we were in one of the beachfront rooms, our patio overlooked a very popular gazebo for brides. While I thoroughly enjoyed this (I am addicted to wedding shows), I don't think that most brides (including yours truly) would be amused by strangers milling about and people in shorts passing through the ceremony site. I felt bad for the bride that had her processional interrupted when a gentleman passed infront of her and her father, who were preparing to walk down the aisle. There are some lovely sites in St. Lucia to be married. Perhaps if you want quiet, you are better off elsewhere. (We were actually married on a private plantation overlooking the Pitons, but St. Lucia offers numerous ceremony sites, you just have to look around).

The reason I mention the wedding at all is that one of the brides (not the one on this site) was visibly upset at the circumstances, and I wouldn't wish anyone to have a bad wedding day. When we saw all of this, fortunately my now husband realized why we went to all of the trouble having an offsite wedding.

All being said, I have no hesitation recommending this location for a romantic vacation/honeymoon. We are already planning our return trip! I understand they are taking some of the rooms and turning them into butler suites, and updating all others. I hope that some of the charm isn't lost.

Our 16th wedding anniversary at Halcyon, Sandals in St. Lucia was the best vacation/anniversary ever! We had been to the Halcyon 5 years before and had pledged to come back. It took us 5 years to save up enough money and we are so glad that we chose to go back.

What keeps us coming back is the staff! We were so well taken care of the first time that we promised the staff we would be back. We were given better care (if that is possible) the second time we returned. Our anniversary was complete with balloons, cards and a bottle of champagne sent to our room! Our dinner reservations were taken care of by Wayne, the Assistant Manager and we were seated by the window to watch the sun set and enjoy our delicious dinner.

We chose the Halcyon because it is smaller (not as many rooms) and the grounds are impeccable. The lush vegetation, beautiful trees, colorful flowers and well landscaped gardens make the Halcyon a tropical paradise. It is easier to get to know the staff and for them to get to know you when you stay at the Halcyon because they are dedicated to making sure that your stay there is a perfect one! Everyone was so pleasant and courteous to us and we enjoyed getting to know the employees and staff.

We love the food and the choices of restaurants that you have within the Sandals in St. Lucia. There are 3 Sandals Resorts on the island and if you stay at the Halcyon (which is in the middle of the three) your complimentary air-conditioned bus ride takes you to both the Grande and the Regency (20 min. either way). There are so many restaurants to choose from including Italian, French, Japanese and Seafood. Some restaurants require evening attire while others are casual. Whatever you choose, the food is always delicious and you will never be disappointed. The servers are very attentive and treat you with respect.

Another nice thing is the fact that there is no tipping. We tried to give the bell hop a tip, twice, and he politely refused. The employees do not work for tips; they do their jobs because they love their jobs and this is what makes the difference. Never once were we made to feel that we should give an employee a tip! This took a lot of pressure off of us.

The beach is absolutely beautiful! The Caribbean offers a calmer body of water so swimming in the water is relaxing. The water sports are great as well. You can enjoy a sail in the catamaran or a paddle in the kayak. If you are looking for something exciting, try the inner tube ride with your partner behind the motor boat. That is so much fun! The best part about it, you can do it as many times as you like because it is all free! The guys who work at the waterfront are all very accommodating and fun to be around!

The Playmakers make the day fun by setting up different games to play around the beach and pool area. You can earn points for the coveted Sandals necklace or a Sandals T-Shirt or a bottle of St. Lucian rum! There is no pressure to play and if you just want to sleep or read you can do that by the pool, beach or in a hammock by the sea. The Halcyon is quiet and peaceful, comfy and relaxing.

There are events planned for your nighttime entertainment such as Casino, Bingo, Talent Show, Karaoke, and Live Bands. You will dance and laugh and have a great time. Don’t forget the piano bar; it is a great place to end your evening. The couches are cozy and the atmosphere is laid back. You can order a drink and sing along with the piano man if you like.

We did not go on any of the excursions that the hotel offers this year. In speaking to the other guests we found that the zip-line through the forest was the best excursion. You can also hire a taxi cab driver (go through the hotel for this) to take you around the island and visit the places of interest. We did this 5 years ago and had a wonderful day. The cost is anywhere from $100 - $120 US. Make sure you do go through the hotel. They will recommend reputable drivers.

We want to thank the following staff at the Sandals Halcyon, St. Lucia. A big thank you to Wayne the Assistant Manager. We saw him handle some pretty tough situations and he never once lost his cool. He is very diplomatic and will go far as a manager someday. Thank you Wayne for taking such great care of us. To the Playmakers, Eslyn, Curlyna and Everton, you guys ROCK! Thank you for making our vacation so much fun! To Vidal, the bartender, you are the best! To Melissa at the front desk, thank you for attending to the details of our perfect anniversary and we came back the second time to the Halcyon because you took such great care of us the first time! To all our servers, but especially Julietta, thank you for your loving care to our dinning needs. To Shawn on the waterfront, we thank you for your smiling face and the great care you gave us. We can see why you were chosen as most valuable employee! To Garfield, the fitness director, you were so kind to get to know us and encourage us to participate in the games! To Linton, the pool attendant, you do an awesome job. We appreciate you speaking to us and making us feel so comfortable, everyday! To Kirby, the groundskeeper, thank you for always speaking to us every morning and wishing us a good day. You were an inspiration to us! To Fortunetta, we thank you for taking such good care of us by seeing that our room was neat and clean each day. Thank you for your special touch!

These are only a few of the names of the employees that we can remember. Really, every one of the Halcyon employees deserves a standing ovation for the quality of care and concern they give to their guests. I have never stayed at a facility where the level of quality care is consistent among the employees!

In reading this review, one may feel that much of the review was given to the employees. That may be true but if you think about it, the service is everything! When you spend a lot of your hard earned money on a vacation, you expect the best, nothing less! That is what we got at the Sandals Halcyon, St. Lucia. “No pressure, no worries” is their motto and they live up to it!

Advisory: If you go to St. Lucia, take time to get to know the people. They are a gentle, giving people. They serve you because they love what they do. Don’t be afraid to give back in return. You will leave a changed person.

A big thank you to everyone at the Halcyon for making our vacation so wonderful. We hope to see you again, soon!

Jim and Ginny Harrison

Just returned from our third stay at Sandals Halcyon Beach in 6 years. It’s true the cliental is predominanently young couples with a large population of newly weds/wedding while there, but for us 61-year old “wrinklies” that just adds to the charm. We did also meet a number of really nice couples of our age from the UK and from the USA.

We really love this place and as returning guests we are so well looked after. So what makes this resort special for us? Well 3 reasons really:

1. The beauty of the site. It’s a mix of beach (more than adequate but you need to get up early to get a shady spot), two very different pool areas and the most wonderful of well kept gardens. These gardens have padded canopy beds with sumptuous cushions that are an extremely relaxing way of getting out of the hot afternoon sun on the beach. In comparison to the Grande and Regency, the hotel is smaller and more intimate.

2. The staff are very friendly and even after 2 years since our last stay, several of them remembered us without prompting and gave us wonderful welcome back hugs. Most are very good but we would particularly like to cite Francis and Soraya in the Bayside, Celine in Marios and Rosemary at the Beach Café, Agnes at the Mirage Bar and of course George on the Island Routes (Tours) Desk who has been helpful to us over the 6 years we have known him. We also met one of the gardeners on his way home late one afternoon, yet he wasn’t troubled in the least to take time out to respond to a question we had about one of the palms. In fact he spent about 20 minutes with us talking about the upkeep of the gardens and it was clear he was very proud of the work he does there. We think his name was Stephen if we have recalled correctly.

3. The location of the resort. Sitting between Sandals Regency (to the south) and Sandals Grande (to the north). It’s just ideal to catch the frequent and free hotel shuttle buses to these two hotels. All the facilities, including the restaurants are available at each location to guests from any of the 3 hotels and that makes for added variety.

We have never had any problems with the food, which is plentiful and varied on the site and very wide ranging if you take the opportunity to use all 3 hotels but you need to make reservations early for those restaurants needing them – particularly the French and Japanese. Cats do wander around the open air Bayside restaurant and Beach café but they are in very good condition and were never a bother for us.

Many of the rooms have recently been refurbished so check what you are getting when booking. We had one of the unrefurbished rooms which are still adequate but the air conditioning is very noisy.

Nothing to do with the hotel, but we were very disappointed with Thomas Cook Signature, through whom we booked. We were not on their list when we arrived at the airport and therefore received no welcome pack. I also spoke to 2 other couples who arrived the week before and they too had the same experience. I eventually tracked down the representative by telephone, who didn’t seem too bothered and when I asked if there was anything I needed to know, was told only to drink plenty of water. What I would have liked to have known, had I not found the Virgin Holdays representative first, was the arrangements for “Check in and Chill Out” on departure. This has worked like clockwork before but be aware that as from the 1 March, Virgin now charge $10 per passenger for the facility, unless the booking is with Virgin Holidays, bookable in advance with the Virgin rep only. We managed to check our cases in at the hotel but were told we still had to wait in line at the Airport Check in to pick up our boarding cards. That really defeated the object of the facility and a waste of $20. Just check what you are getting before you opt for the facility.

Thanks again to Sandals for a wonderful holiday.
