This was mine and my husband’s first visit to the East Winds, and we were there for a week from Sunday, August 5th to Sunday, August 12th, but immediately upon arrival it was obvious why so many people keep coming back over and over. We choose to take the helicopter transfer from the International airport after our long flight to the island, and we quickly arrived to the East Winds within an hour of landing. We were greeted at reception with cold towels and rum punch while we waited for our room, Ocean View #29, to be ready. After a few minutes we were escorted away from reception and were given a tour of the property before we were taken to our room.
Our Room: We wanted to stay in one of the ocean view rooms since they were located closest to the beach and we were not at all disappointed. Our room was full of Caribbean charm. We had a king sized bed that we enjoyed laying in with the balcony doors open so we could be serenaded by the crashing ocean waves. The room had air conditioning; although we found that we didn’t need it all that often if we had the balcony doors open. A nice breeze always came in off of the ocean and we never had issues with being bitten by bugs. The bathrooms were galley style, long and skinny. We’re pretty small people so we didn’t have any issues maneuvering around each other in the bathroom, but I could easily see how it could be a tight fit for someone who might be larger. The room also had a dresser/vanity with a chair, as well as a refrigerator stocked with beer (Heineken and Piton), sodas, and water, as well as a pantry which had coffee and team. The balcony doors opened onto a small patio with seating and a table where we often lounged and enjoyed the view. The four ocean view rooms are a part of a remodeled beach house, so there is an open-air Card Room that is shared between the rooms. We used this room several times during our stay, especially on the few days that were very rainy, but none of the other guests staying in the ocean view rooms seemed too. We really enjoyed having the space.
The Food: We enjoyed every meal, from the tasty breakfasts where Auntie Paula made us omelets, French toast and pancakes to order. Lunches were buffet style and delicious as well and there were always several options to choose from. Our favorite lunch was on Saturday where we were served an amazing seafood paella while listening to the sounds of a local steel pan band. Dinners were always wonderful, and there were always vegetarian options (which I appreciated). Each evening dinner was started off with a tasty amuse-bouche before leading into the rest of the meal, and we enjoyed each evening’s entertainment, from the sounds of a pianist, a trombone & sax duo, a folk group, etc. We thought the Friday night bar-b-que was very good, and different from the rest of the dinners we had enjoyed over our stay. There were always plenty of wines to choose from each night, and they were served liberally. On our final night, we were sat at a private gazebo decorated in flowers for our anniversary and found it to be very romantic.
The Beach: There were plenty of sun huts scattered throughout the beachfront and we never had issues getting one. There was none of the towel game that you see at other resorts going on here. The beach is small but beautiful and you can do some easy snorkeling right off the beachfront where we saw plenty of fish, star fish and crabs. There is a beachfront bar that is only a quick walk away from the huts and we didn’t mind getting up every once in a while to grab our own drinks if we wanted them.
The pool: This was a comfortable sized pool which included a self-serve swim-up bar. My husband is a bartender for a living so we never had issues making our own drinks. For those guests who don’t have their own personal bartender, the East Winds also had a drink recipe tacked up in the pool bar so people could experiment with making their own.
Activities: We decided to scuba dive and hike Gros Piton during our stay, and we also each got massages. The reception set up the Gros Piton hike for us easily and we enjoyed that experience immensely. The massages for easily scheduled through reception as well, which we planned for the day after our Gros Piton hike, and the masseuse that provided the service was excellent. We arranged the scuba diving ourselves, with reception’s guidance, as you really only have to walk down the beach to the dive shop located on the Windjammer property to set up a dive trip. We never took out one of the hobie cats or kayaks, but they were easily accessible from the staff at the watersports area. Finally, my husband and I renewed our wedding vows on our anniversary, Friday, and everyone made the day so special for us. The spot on the beach where the ceremony took place was stunning. They really went all out to make the occasion really special for us and we couldn’t have been happier.
The staff – A HUGE thank you to EVERYONE, from the ladies at reception, the bartenders and restaurant staff, the chefs, the housekeepers, Gareth the general manager, the grounds keepers, etc. We did not meet a single person on the staff that wasn’t kind, helpful or charming. This place is so wonderful in big part to the staff and all the work they do. I don’t want to list out names because I am worried I would forget someone, and everyone at the East Winds is too amazing to forget!
Finally, I would recommend this place in a heartbeat if you are looking for a relaxing and low-key Caribbean experience. You can do as much or as little as you want, and the whole experience is luxurious without being pretentious. We loved every moment of our stay and by the end of the week we wished we could have stayed longer. We will definitely be back to stay with our friends at the East Winds again!!!
