5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 December 2013

We stayed at Cap Maison the first half of our trip and came down to Sugar Beach for the second half. We highly doubted that our second resort could come close to the quality of the first, but we were happily surprised. Sugar Beach has everything from gorgeous dining on the water, beautiful villas nestled in the jungle, athletic facilities, a beautiful beach, and a fantastic rainforest walk on the property.

It is extremely expensive, but you get what you pay for: personal butler service, shuttles around the property, and attentive service elsewhere.

I'm sure they probably have thought of this but they should invest in electric shuttles instead of the noisy and smelly gas-powered ones. Also, the plumbing started to smell in our villa and I'm not sure if that can be blamed on the sulfur-spewing volcano on the other side of the mountain.

The food wasn't extraordinary though some of the breakfasts were delicious. I recommend the inclusive packages because it's difficult to get out of the resort.

All around though it was great. Walking around the property and stargazing on the beach cannot be beat for the best honeymoon ever.

Service: Very Good (Best we have found in the Caribbean)

Facilities: Excellent

Feel of Luxury: Excellent (Superior for Caribbean)

Relaxation Factor: Excellent

Food: Well prepared/presented, good variety, very tasty. Buffet with Al a Cart Breakfast very nice!

Location: Picture Postcard “Paradise” on Earth

Beach & Pools: Breathtakingly beautiful location. The pool is right on the beach, calm sea waters and brilliant fast bar service with “EMERGENCY” red flags you can wave should your rum & coke run dry!!

We visited Sugar Beach for 12 nights at the end of November 2013. The resort is very very chilled, even during full occupancy as it was when we travelled, the hotel never at any point, on the beach at the pool in the restaurants or in the gym felt crowded in any way, There is loads of space and lots of hidden away hammocks, floating beds etc. to relax on...

Bed, Bed-linens and general furnishing and fixtures are very modern, elegant and most importantly luxuriously comfortable (not the same at other Caribbean resorts we have stayed at).

The passionate, friendly, easy going and most importantly GENUINE service ALL of the hotel staff provides is consistent throughout the resort and really makes your stay enjoyable! Special “SHOUT OUT” to the one and only “Energizer Bunny” AKA: Canice, who works tirelessly in the GYM to ensure all the holiday drinking & eating doesn’t send you home with a bigger belly then the one you came with! And also to our mate Lawrence at the beach bar who always made us welcome, smile and very nice Gin & Tonic’s!

The hotel offers many water sports from its private beach, both motorised and non-motorised. The beach does have a lot of speedboat traffic and coming and goings but we never ever found this a problem.

If you want to see picture post card paradise and stay at a very chilled, tranquil and luxurious resort this has to be the number one choice not only for St Lucia but for the whole of the Caribbean!

Note to Resort Manager for Improvements: Revamp the afternoon tea please it is too small, not fresh/yummy enough and lacks that creative wow factor…. It was cheap as afternoon teas go, I say charge more and give us what we want, amazing yummy cakes that we have never seen or tasted before!

Finally it is not often I feel the need to complain about my fellow trip-advisor compadres but the other reviews which MOAN about the winding/hilly “un-safe” roads which made people feel sick!! You’re in a rainforest PEOPLE going up and down mountains with rise/drop in altitude... what do you expect!! We hired a car for our full trip and found all the roads adequate and the scenery breathtakingly beautiful!

Room Tip: Best rooms (larger rooms) upper superior sugar mill rooms. They benefit from their own private roof...

My wife and I had been planning this trip for quite some time as it had been 3 years since our last vacation and it was well overdue, so we needed everything to be perfect.

The first thing I will say is that after asking several local taxi drivers they all seemed to agree that this is the best resort on the island which is unbiased information.

Sugar Beach is about an hour's drive from the airport, if you go by taxi ask the driver to stop at a local shop so that you can have your first local beer "piton". The resort is just beautiful, set in a real calm bay that is between both pitons, rain forest, white sandy beach, clean warm sea water, amazing sunset as it looks to the west...breath taking.

We had the most basic room which was plenty big as it had its own gigantic terrace with small pool for enhanced romanticism...clean, spacious all the amenities you could expect. You have your own butler which in our case was Nyson and he was just great.

There are 3 restaurants, one is a sushi bar with good quality sushi, the beach side restaurant with a basic menu but quality food...the fish dishes are specially recommendable and the great room restaurant with a more delicate menu also with great food.
We personally missed more access to local food as it was mostly western concept food. The waiting staff is very attentive and provide an enhanced enjoyment of the eating experience...we gave them 10 points.
If you are staying for at least a week you may find the menu options somewhat limited and may want to leave the resort in search of other food options. There is a restaurant which is 15 minutes drive that bases all it's dishes around chocolate flavors...worth trying but expect to pay $150 per couple.

Just a quick note...apparently it depends on the time of the year but make sure you take the strongest mosquito repellant available as they will eat you alive.

The water sports facility didn't meet our expectations as they had a very relaxed approach to catering for our needs and diving interests, we would have liked to organize an intensive dive vacation and even though we ended diving very little because of an ear infection the overall impression with the staff there was not great. The water sports manager Vitus was great and attentive, he really made an effort when he was our instructor but unfortunately he was away often as he also sales the resort's ship.

People in general are friendly but have a very relaxed interpretation of certainly and right away...don't expect for anything to happen in a rush...we also assumed that communication is easy as most speak fluent English but their real language is Creole but I think that frequently they may not have understood our requests.

All in all a good experience which we would gladly repeat.

We stayed at Sugar Beach after comparing it with other resorts on the island. I'm glad that we did, two words…air conditioning. Oh yeah and free wifi, which saved us a ton on international data and calls. We stayed in one of the luxury villas opting for privacy higher on the mountain over the beachfront. The villa was spotless and the bed was very comfy. We had a pool, but it was rather chilly due to the lack of sunlight on our porch. I believe some of the plunge pools are heated. We met another couple there who's pool got plenty of light and they used it every day. The shuttles were never a problem, rarely did we have to wait more than a minute or two.
You can tell that some of the kinks with service are still being worked out, but it wasn't irritating. For example, this happened two or three times, we would sit down at one of the restaurants and three different servers would try to take our order after we had already ordered.
We never got bored with the food. Breakfast was our favorite, tons of choices. Drinks are expensive, but about the same as other high end resorts. The rooms provide two free Pitons everyday.
We went diving quite a bit while we were there. The scuba instructor, Eddison, was very patient and professional. Diving was great all around the resort.
Visiting the spa is a must. Wow!
Usually we are pretty adventurous, but we didn't feel a huge need to leave the resort. We did climb the Gros Piton, which was fun.
The resort crowd was mixed, some empty nester diving couples, lots of honeymooners and some families with kids. It didn't look like there was a huge night party crowd, which was fine with us, because that isn't why we were there.
I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Stay on the beach if you are social, higher on the mountain if you want more privacy.

This lovely resort shows its plantation roots. The beautiful old veranda'd main building, manicured grounds, and well appointed bungalows provided a quiet and stately setting for a restorative visit. An amazing setting, we appreciated the beach set between Gros Piton and Petit Piton, and the calm of the waters between. We enjoyed snorkelling and stand up paddle boards, as well as swimming in the warm dark blue Caribbean waters. The restaurants were good but uninspired, and rather costly. There is an air of quiet reserve at Sugar Beach, no nightlife and little mingling. We stayed in bungalow #16, right on the beach, with our own palapa and hammock, walled private courtyard with hot tub. Bungalows #12-16 are the choice ones, on the sand. Higher numbered bungalows are raised up and have a deck and steps down to the beach. The hillside has many other rooms, set into the rainforest. They required shuttle service down to restaurants and beach. The private butler is a nice idea, they were very friendly, but failed to execute our two small requests. Staff was generally warm and friendly. An excellent choice for peace and quiet.

We just returned from a wonderful visit to Sugar Beach. We were there to attend a wedding. The resort is beautiful. It's a truly stunning property. Our luxury villa was awesome and very, very spacious. By far the best room I have had the pleasure of staying in on a resort. The property is very lush and tropical. The beach was nice. It's not the nicest beach I've been to (e.g. Aruba, Turks & Caicos, Negril, etc.). But, the water is crystal clear and we had a great time relaxing on the beach. The service at the resort was top notch. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to ensure that you are having a good time....everyone from the butlers to the servers at the restaurants and on the beach. We had Swedish massages at the spa. It was fantastic!!! I highly recommend visiting the spa and treating yourself to a massage. I was not, however, impressed with the food at the resort. It was not horrible. It was just average, at best. The food that was served during the wedding reception, however, was GREAT. It was very delicious and the best meal I ate while visiting St. Lucia.

I would highly recommend this resort. It's lovely and quite luxurious. We certainly intend to return.
