“Quiet relaxation”
Reviewed 6 February 2012

My wife and I just returned from staying at Stonefield Estate in St. Lucia. We stayed in the Orchid villa which had its own Infinity pool which looked onto Petit Piton. The villa was very nice, bed comfortable with a mosquito net as the bathroom shower was partially open, but completely private despite that.

The restaurant Mango Tree serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We generally ate Breakfast and Dinner. For Breakfast they had nice fresh juices, I usually had the Piton Special which was two eggs scrambled, but you can get them any style with potatoes and ham or sausages. I also had the Stonefield Favorite which was a Toasted Baguette with Lettuce, Tomato, Cheese and Scrambled eggs. It was quite different from anything I normally had, but quite good. Dinners were very good as well I especially enjoyed the Blackened Tuna. My favorite drink was the TI Ponche which is a strong rum mixed with lime juice and honey.

The hotel will book a complimentary taxi at four specified times to Jalouise Beach, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. You should bring a few bucks to tip the driver. Jalousie beach is technically public, but you cannot use any of the hotel's nice chairs. They let you rent some less than attractive chairs for $20 a piece. There are free chairs on the rocky side of the beach which is frequented by Snorkeling tours from Soufriere. Buy a Piton from the local vendors and do some snorkeling, gear is also rented.

There is a beach closer to Stonefield which you can get to by walking down the steep road off the back exit of the hotel driveway. The beach has a mix of fine sand to a more rocky. Harmony's is sometimes open which we were able to drink some Piton's on their nice deck overlooking the harbor.

You can arrange to do a more adventurous activity with the hotel reception desk. We chose to climb Gros Piton. Make sure you get an early start because it gets hotter the later you go. We scarfed down breakfast at 7:30am and departed at 8. The hotel taxi will drop you off and get you with a guide. Bring lots of water and snacks in a small backpack. The trail is very well maintained, but sometimes the steps go nearly straight up the mountain. We made it to the top, but 30% do not make it.

We stayed in Manchineel which was a beautiful room with fabulous views. We were delighted to be there as we had only booked a garden view room. Loved the bananas growing in the outdoor shower. The room has A/C. The hotel has really tried hard to provide everything you need for a relaxing stay and with the private plunge pool you hardly need venture anywhere. We had a car so did quite a bit of exploring and there is a lot to visit in the area. We enjoyed the food in the restaurant very much, though like most of Soufriere, we found it expensive.

Stonefield Estates was amazing. We had the pleasure of visiting this resort in Early December.

Pictures can not describe this hidden gem of a resort. It is in the southern part of the island.
We pulled up to the resort and were greeted by the general manager Paul.
After checking in, we were given some Starfish punch (which was amazing), and drove down to our villa by our cab driver. We stayed in Flamboyant Villas which was amazing. We walked into the villa and were blown away by the view.

Right in front of us was a view of the Petite Piton and a 180 degree view of the Caribbean Sea. We were shown around the villa and realized we were staying in paradise. The view of the villa was so stunning it made my wife almost cry from tears of joy.

Our villa was huge and we felt like we had our own little property staying at the resort. We had own our 9 foot pool, which we spend several hours in, and we enjoyed swimming in the pool and floating on a raft we think a previous guest left. Our only complaint about the pool area was that the pool light at night didn't work. One day, we ran into the maintenance manager and told him of our issue, so I'm sure it is fixed by now. Our villa had a huge outdoor deck with a hammock and table ad chairs. We could of stayed in the hammock all day and just admired the view.

Inside the villa, we had our own living room and kitchen area with full utensils, plates, etc. We are only sorry that we didn't get to stop at the supermarket before we got there. Otherwise, we could have had several meals right at the villa enjoying the view. When we arrived at the villa, it was decorated with fresh flowers and a sign saying "Welcome Home", which was a nice touch. The bedroom area was large too, and the villa had several ceilings fan to keep us cool. Our villa had air conditioning in the bedroom which was needed during the day. The air condition unit was very powerful and keep us cool. The bed was very comfortable and was surrounded by mosquito netting which we used at night. Their was also candles in the villa as well you could use to create a romantic setting.

The villa also had a private outdoor shower. Our outdoor shower had a little garden growing in it which was really neat. There was places to hang your towels and robes (Yes, they were in the villa too) in the outdoor shower area as well.

I believe Stonefield has around 18 villas and our villa felt very private and you couldn't here or see your neighbors at all. At night, we would here the soothing sounds of the tree frogs which would put us to sleep. One day we walked the grounds to the little nature trail they have on property which is about a 10 min easy walk to hieroglyphics. Stonefield has a pool area near the Mango Tree Restaurant. However, most guest tend to stay at their own villa so the only time you see the other guests is at the restaurant.

The Mango Tree Restaurant was up a slight hill from our villa, so we walked off the wonderful food that we had from each mill. The food was amazing and very filling. Breakfast included fresh fruits, breads, fruit jams, and various kinds of eggs or pancakes (Mango, Coconut, etc.). The menu varies every couple of days so their is always new things on the menu.
The Roti for lunch was very good and the dinners were amazing. Since it got dark earlier in Dec when we were there, we had dinner every night by candlelight in the main dining area or under the moonlight by the pool. It was a really romantic setting. We spoke to Paul the general manager at most meals, and he is a really nice guy who takes good pride in Stonefield Estates making sure the resort is running smoothly. He even called the general manager of the next resort we were staying at and put in a good word for us. He mentioned that all the fruits and veggies are grown on property and the seafood is caught locally as well. So, all the food is super fresh.

The front desk staff of Valna, Sadia,Susan and Karan were very friendly and helped us with all our needs. One night, we got locked out of our villa and the staff walked us down to our villa and helped us get back in to our resort. Our only complaint was that the front desk was up a hill from our villa. They did provide phones for us during our stay, but I couldn't figure them out, so I would constantly walk to the front desk to ask for towels, soap, etc.. You have to request turn down service at night, where they will spray your room for bugs and turn down the bed for night. We just stopped by the front desk before we headed to dinner.

We also used the shuttle service the resort provides to take us to Jalousie Plantation. We were able to use Jalousie Plantation beach. Our shuttle was about 40 mins late in picking us up. The trip from Stonefield to Jalousie is about 8 mins.

Their is also security walking around the resort so we felt pretty safe when we were there. The resort is built into a hill so my suggestion would be to bring comfortable shoes. The resort gets dark at night so remember where your villa is as well before you head to dinner or you will wonder around like we did after our first dinner looking for your villa.

All in all, Stonefield Villas was an amazing place to stay and we would highly recommend this place to anybody.

Wonderful time at Stonefield. Stayed in Casaurina . Views of ocean and Pitons great. Private,
Comfortable and relaxing. Staff friendly and accommodating. Outdoor patio with hammock, private plunge pool and chaises just right. Perfect for the price point. Ac worked great. No ibugs in this air conditioned room. Lighting fine for bedtime reading. Nicely decorated with fresh flowers on arrival. Just perfect! No problem with jungle "noises" at night.

We really had al laid back stay!

Room Tip: Ocean view with ac perfect

This was our second trip to St. Lucia, but this time only for 1 night. I picked this hotel because it did not look like a typical tourist place, and the restaurant was rated one of the best on the island.

We arrived at 3 PM on New Year's Eve. Our room was not ready until 4:30. This did not start us out right. We made reservations at the restaurant for dinner, set menu because of the holiday, $105/pp. WOW. A bit high.

Even if we got off to a bad start, the management was kind and bought us a drink while we waited. When taken to our room, we were absolutely stunned! They gave us the original house - 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, fill kitchen, private pool, with the BEST views ever. I am figuring since we were only there 1 night, all the single rooms were booked, because there were only 2 of us.

This house was awesome, We are familiar with island homes, having lived in the Caribbean about 10 years ago. We understand the effort and time it must have taken to build this place many years ago (most likely in the 1960's). However, it did show it's age. No screens on the jalousie windows (except in the bedrooms), so lizards were running all over the rest of the house. Bathrooms and kitchen were dated, probably same cabinets from day one. The bed was very comfortable. I am a towel person, and the towels were new, soft and nice. The noise from the restaurant was very loud. I know - New Year's Eve! The windows do not close - that means NO A/C. So there is no getting away from any noise, be it coakie frogs, rain or music.

The other cottages were tucked into the hillsides, so we did not see them, but I would suspect they are all different. This is a fabulous family retreat. We saw a few families with small children.

The restaurant was highly over-rated. Our food only fine, nothing worth $105. Great view from restaurant, but once it's dark, there is no view. Our breakfast was just OK and included in the price,

Next time, I will go back to the "resort" style complex.

Room Tip: Lower rooms are closer to restaurant and beach, there are NO rooms on the beach, which is very small...

We loved Stonefield Villas, but there are some big pros and cons to the location. There are 17 villas that dot the hillside, all with amazing views and accommodations. We stayed in the Ginger Lilly. The plunge pool was huge! And we were in it all the time. We also highly enjoyed relaxing in the hammock. The bed was a little hard, but still comfortable. The room was clean and nice, not a lot to it. We didn't have any trouble with bugs, we were shocked at how few we actually saw. The tiny frogs were super loud at night, but that's what you get for staying in the jungle! We really loved the outdoor shower, and the staff was awesome. The on site restaurant was just okay. The food wasn't horrible, but it wasn't anything to cheer about either. However, the view was phenomenal. We didn't have any trouble with the heat or air conditioner, all was just right.

The location of the resort is off the beaten path, outside the tourist zone. You can't walk anywhere worth going, and taxis are stupid expensive. As in $200 plus to drive 15 miles. Renting a car is advisable if you like to explore. But, be aware that they drive on the left side, don't enforce traffic laws, and drive like crazy people. The beach that is noted on the website is not worth walking to, but do take the shuttle of to Jalouise. It's a gorgeous resort and you can catch a water taxi (also expensive) or plan a whale watching trip there.

For those that are thinking of visiting St. Lucia, I offer the following advice:

1. Rent a car if you stay anywhere outside the north end of the island or bring lots of $$ for taxi rides.
2. If you want to stay in the jungle and escape life for awhile, stay at Stonefield Villas.
3. If you prefer to be in the middle of it all with lots to do, stay on the North end.
4. Don’t waste your money snorkeling.
5. Ask around for Randolph for some fun boating excursions or water taxi rides.
6. If you go during Hurricane season, you might save money, but be prepared to get wet and get travel insurance!

I posted a longer write up of the trip on my blog at http://www.lifefiguredout.com/an-island-adventure-in-st-lucia/

Room Tip: Make sure you get a plunge pool and ocean view!

We recently stayed at Stonefield Estate over the Xmas holiday. It really is a beautiful, rustic place. It's set on a hillside in a rain forest with a view of one of the Pitons and the ocean. It's very private and the view is stunning. Our villa had a deck and a hammock with a plunge pool next to it. It was very tranquil and we had a momma cat and three little kittens who greeted us daily. I guess I should say they "adopted" us and we fed them daily. They were adorable. I'd give the view a 5, the outdoor area a 4 (it was a bit worn, but fine), the inside is quite spacious, but about what I'd expect from a 3.5 star hotel as the sheets and towels are a bit thin, but again just fine. Don't expert super luxury, it's more rustic, tranquil, and beautiful. It's a great romantic get away. A few things you should know before you go to St. Lucia...this hotel is somewhat isolated. We were VERY happy to have a car. You will be driving on the left side of the road, Brit style, but we adapted quickly. It takes about 50 minutes to get from the Vieux Fort airport to the hotel. The roads are quite winding and sometimes steep, but don't let it put you off. We got around easily, though a few times I had to drop the car into low gear to make it up some of the hills. No, you don't need a four wheel drive. It would have been nice to have, but not a necessity. As for food, the restaurant at the hotel is mediocre and overpriced, but not more so than anywhere else we visited. The breakfast is included and good. We visited Ladera for dinner one night and it was pretty good, but not truly great (you may need reservations). If you take a right out of Stonefield and then take the first left, you'll enter the parking lot of a plantation. They have a buffet (lunch only, I think) for $25 for two people. It's basic, but fine and a good value for the island. They also have a zip line course which is fun. Honestly, I'd probably pack some snacks/favorite coffee if I went to St. Lucia again. I'm an adventurous eater, but some good cheese and good coffee would have been a treat. The market in town was a bit sparse. Surprisingly, we had trouble finding simple, fresh food. If you take a right out of Stonefield and take the first right, you'll be on the road which takes you to Jalousie (about 3 miles in). At Jalousie you can enjoy their beach; the water was wonderful for swimming, warm and clear. Lunch at Jalousie was again overpriced, but decent. The drinks were very good. If we had kids it might have been better to stay at Jalousie because there are a lot of beach activities for them. This is not to say Jalousie is overrun with kids, it is not. There was maybe 1 child for every 1 adult and all was fairly subdued. The thing that put me off Jalousie was the drivers. When you go you have to park in a lot at the top of the hill and then they ferry you down in a four wheel vehicle. Almost every driver had an attitude like they were doing us and enormous favor as we weren't guests of the hotel but the "rabble" they had to cart around! I was somewhat irritated by this as we were spending about $100/day at Jalousie on drinks and food. That should be worth an attitude free trip up the hill. As for tours....if you drive down to the Soufriere waterfront (about a 10 minute trip), you'll find Mystic Man Tours at the far end by the police station. We did a beautiful half day sailing trip with them. We also did a "Manager's Special" tour through Stonefield and our driver, David, was great. He gave us a tour of the northern part of the island/Rodney Bay area. Rest assured Soufriere is a much more beautiful place to stay. Service...service everywhere is slow, it's island time 'mon! We had very kind service at Stonefield. St. Lucia is beautiful and all in all it was a lovely trip.
